What is the best VPN for Android TV?
Top10VPN reviewed 59 VPNs and found 16 with native Android or Google TV apps. It says it tested shortlisted apps on Sony Bravia 4K OLED, Nvidia Shield TV Pro, Onn 4K Pro, and Google TV Streamer devices. Its comparison was updated July 29, 2026; its paid-pick testing is marked September 2026 and its PrivadoVPN testing August 2026. A native TV app matters because it is designed for a television interface and remote navigation rather than relying on a phone-style app or another device.

Which VPN is fastest for Android TV?
There is no universally fastest VPN for every Android TV connection. Top10VPN’s September 2026 tests gave IPVanish a 9.8/10 speed rating; it measured average international download-speed losses of 15% for ExpressVPN and 17% for Surfshark. Those are that publisher’s test observations, not predicted results for every home network, server, or streaming service. The cited figures do not establish a comparable speed result for PrivadoVPN or Proton VPN.
A VPN encrypts traffic and routes it through a VPN server, which can add processing and distance. NordVPN says, “In most cases, a VPN will not make your internet speed faster.” A nearby server may limit extra distance; a VPN could help in a particular case if an internet provider throttles certain traffic, but that is not a general speed improvement. For the most relevant result, compare performance from your own TV and internet connection to nearby servers, then test the specific app and region you want to use. Streaming platforms change their access controls, so no provider can guarantee access to a particular service or regional catalog.

What should you compare before choosing?
Native app and remote usability
Check that the service has a native Android TV or Google TV app for your device. Top10VPN’s comparison emphasizes native apps, and its findings distinguish practical remote navigation: it described ExpressVPN’s TV navigation as intuitive, while noting that Surfshark required more scrolling and IPVanish credential entry was cumbersome. Your experience may depend on the TV interface and remote.
Streaming results and speed evidence
Look for tests that identify the service, location, and test date rather than relying on a provider’s server count or a broad “fast” claim. Top10VPN reported broad streaming access for ExpressVPN and fewer geo-blocks bypassed by IPVanish relative to ExpressVPN in its comparison. These observations are time-bound; service availability can change, and successful access in a test does not assure access for every account, region, or viewing session.
Privacy claims and their limits
IPVanish’s audited no-logs policy is noted by Top10VPN. ExpressVPN describes its Lightway protocol and RAM-only TrustedServer technology on its own Android TV page; those are provider claims. Proton’s guide lists WireGuard and Stealth. A VPN encrypts the connection between the TV and VPN server, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent every service, app, network, or account provider from identifying activity.

Device compatibility and simultaneous connections
Confirm your TV’s Android version and connection method before subscribing. ExpressVPN says it supports Android 5.0 or newer; Proton’s general Android TV requirement is Android 8 or later, with its Amazon Appstore build supporting Android 7.1 or later; Surfshark requires Android 7.0 or later. Surfshark also documents an Ethernet limitation for Android TV devices running Android 9 and 12. Top10VPN notes unlimited simultaneous connections for IPVanish and Surfshark; check the provider’s current terms for any plan-specific conditions.
Free-plan allowance
PrivadoVPN’s 10 GB monthly cap, as reported in Top10VPN’s August 2026 test, suits occasional or limited viewing better than continuous streaming. A free tier’s cap and streaming availability are subject to change; check the current plan details before relying on it.

Its guide specifies Android 8 or later generally, with Android 7.1 or later supported for the Amazon Appstore build. Proton’s guide is provider documentation; the cited Top10VPN comparison does not provide an independent streaming-performance test for Proton alongside its named finalists. How do I install a VPN on Android TV?
Use Google Play when the provider offers its app for your device. Sideload an APK only when the provider documents that method and the device supports it; install only an APK obtained through the provider’s official instructions.
- Check compatibility. Find your TV’s Android version in its settings and compare it with the VPN’s published requirements. If you use Ethernet, check for device- or version-specific limitations such as Surfshark’s warning for Android 9 and 12.
- Install the official app. Open Google Play on the TV, search for the VPN provider’s official app, and select Install. If the app is unavailable and the provider documents direct APK installation, follow that provider’s instructions; ExpressVPN recommends APK sideloading only when a direct download is unavailable.
- Sign in and connect. Open the app and follow its login flow. Proton supports signing in with a QR code or verification code; Surfshark also documents QR-code or login-code options. Choose a server and connect.
- Set connection preferences if needed. Proton documents auto-connect and protocol selection in its TV guide. Use the provider’s app instructions for any equivalent settings rather than assuming menu labels are identical across services.
- Verify the result in the app you use. Open the streaming service and check that playback works in your location. If it does not, try another suitable server or contact the VPN provider; access may change, and a VPN cannot guarantee that a service will accept a connection.
NordVPN also documents Google Play, APK, and router setup options in its Android TV guide. ExpressVPN documents Google Play and APK installation on its Android TV page. A router setup is an alternative when the TV itself cannot run a supported app, but it is not required for a compatible Android TV device.
