Sometimes—but it depends on the glasses and the feature. Some functions may work when a phone is not nearby, but setup, AI, syncing, updates, or live services can still depend on a supported smartphone, an app, or an internet connection. For Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Ray-Ban says a smartphone and the Meta AI app are required to operate them.
Can you use smart glasses without a phone?
There are two different questions: whether the glasses can be set up without a smartphone, and whether they can do anything when the phone is not nearby. A model might require a phone for initial pairing yet retain a few functions afterward. That does not make it fully phone-independent.
There is no single answer for all smart glasses. The published requirements discussed here are specific to Ray-Ban Meta and Meta Ray-Ban Display; they should not be treated as rules for every brand or model.
Ray-Ban Meta: a smartphone is required
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ says: “To operate Ray-Ban Meta glasses you need to connect your glasses with a smart phone and the Meta AI app.” Its US setup guidance lists Android 10 or later with location services enabled, or iOS 14.4 or later, plus a Meta account and wireless internet access. Requirements can vary by model and market, so check the current requirements for the exact glasses you are considering.

This is a meaningful limitation if you do not own a compatible smartphone: the phone is not merely an optional screen for the glasses. If you already own one but want to leave it behind occasionally, check which particular actions the glasses support while disconnected rather than assuming the full experience will continue.
Meta Ray-Ban Display: some functions can work without the app nearby
Meta Ray-Ban Display still needs to be paired through the Meta AI mobile app on a supported phone during setup. After that, Ray-Ban says some functions remain available while the glasses are disconnected from the app. Its Display FAQ lists taking photos and videos, checking battery level, and listening to audio from a phone connected over Bluetooth.

Those examples have different dependencies. Capturing photos or videos does not mean the captures can be imported to a phone-free destination; audio playback described in the FAQ uses a phone connected over Bluetooth. The distinction is between a function that remains available without the Meta AI app connection and a completely phone-free experience.
Phone-free is not the same as offline
The Display FAQ says captures and some voice controls are available without Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is needed for Meta AI, importing captures, and installing updates. So a feature may work without the phone app connected but still depend on a network for related services.

What Meta Ray-Ban Display web apps can do
Meta’s developer documentation says web apps run on Meta Ray-Ban Display using standard web APIs. Meta says these apps can run without a companion app and can be designed to work offline using service workers and the Cache API.
That is a limited standalone capability, not a way to skip phone-based setup. Ray-Ban’s Display FAQ still requires pairing through the mobile app before setup is complete. Offline web-app behavior also depends on what the app has cached; live data can use the glasses’ Wi-Fi or a phone tether, and the location API uses the paired phone.

Meta describes the Display glasses as a way to check messages, preview photos, see translations, and use Meta AI without pulling out a phone. This is a hands-free benefit, not proof that the glasses operate independently of a phone: the setup requirement and the connectivity needs of individual features still apply.

- Works on the glasses: Which actions—such as capturing a photo, using controls, or playing locally available audio—remain available with no phone nearby?
- Needs Bluetooth to a phone: Does audio playback or another phone-sourced service require the phone to be connected?
- Needs Wi-Fi or internet: Which features, such as AI responses, live data, syncing, capture imports, or updates, need a network?
- Needs an app or account: Is the phone required only for setup, or for normal use as well? What account, operating-system, region, or app requirements apply?
- Depends on prior setup or cached data: Does an offline feature work only after pairing or after content has been stored on the glasses?
A camera, display, touch controls, neural wristband, or offline-app feature describes a way to interact with a device or use a particular task. None of those alone establishes that a model can be set up without a phone or provide all its features without one.
Bottom line for buyers
Some smart-glasses functions can work when a phone is not nearby, but that is different from setting up or using the glasses entirely without a smartphone. Ray-Ban Meta requires a supported smartphone and the Meta AI app to operate. Meta Ray-Ban Display retains some functions after setup and supports web apps that can be designed for offline use, but pairing and several connected features still depend on a phone or network. Check the exact model’s setup, app, account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and offline requirements before buying.
