It streams a game running on your PS5 to a compatible device. PS5 emulation instead tries to run games locally on a PC, but as of September 2026, compatibility and performance remain limited and experimental. The right choice depends on whether you want to use a console you own or explore local emulation despite bugs and uncertainty.
How the two options work
Remote Play and emulation address different needs. Remote Play sends the video and controls between a console and a second device; emulation attempts to reproduce PS5 behavior on PC hardware. One borrows the computing power of your console, while the other tries to replace it.

| Question | PlayStation Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a PS5 or PS4 console; a compatible device receives the stream. | Locally on a PC through an emulator or compatibility project. |
| Does it require a PS5? | Yes, for PS5 Remote Play. Sony also supports Remote Play from PS4 consoles. | Not as the machine running the emulator. Requirements for games and firmware vary by project and are not established here. |
| How dependable is it? | Sony-supported, subject to compatible games and devices, and network conditions. | Experimental. Reporting in 2026 describes limited compatibility, bugs, visual glitches, and uneven performance. |
| Does it need a network? | Yes. Sony requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience; those thresholds do not guarantee a particular image quality or latency. | Local execution is not inherently a stream, but project-specific setup and legal access to games and firmware are not established here. |
| Best suited to | A PS5 owner who wants to play on a supported phone, computer, TV device, or Portal. | A technically curious PC user willing to experiment and accept that a desired game may not work well. |
Choose Remote Play if you want to use your console library elsewhere
Remote Play runs the game on your PS5 or PS4 and streams it to another supported device. For PS5 games, that means you need access to a PS5; an emulator is not required. Sony’s official Remote Play guidance says the console must be connected to broadband, and the free PS Remote Play app must be installed on a compatible device.
Requirements and network expectations
- Sony lists a PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, or a PS4 or PS4 Pro, connected to broadband.
- Use a compatible phone, tablet, PC, Mac, TV device, or another PlayStation in supported combinations. Available devices include iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows PC, Mac, Android TV/Chromecast with Google TV, PS5, and PS4; operating-system and controller support vary.
- Sony states a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are network thresholds, not guarantees of low latency or a particular picture quality. Mobile data use can count against your plan.
- You may need a supported DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller depending on the device. Supported mobile devices also offer touch controls.
Distance between the console and remote TV can increase latency. Some games do not support Remote Play, including games requiring PlayStation VR or VR2 and titles needing peripherals beyond supported controllers. Games that must be streamed with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership are also excluded from standard Remote Play.

When PlayStation Portal makes sense
PlayStation Portal is a dedicated screen for Remote Play, not a PS5 emulator. In Remote Play mode, it streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5; that PS5 must be online and powered on or in Rest Mode. Sony does not require PlayStation Plus for Portal Remote Play.
Portal also has a separate cloud-streaming mode. Sony’s November 2025 announcement says PlayStation Plus Premium members can stream selected PS5 games, including eligible digital games in their library and games from PlayStation Plus catalogs, without connecting Portal to their own PS5. The eligible titles and requirements may change.

What PS5 emulation can—and cannot—offer today
Emulation is the option to investigate if your goal is local PC execution rather than streaming from a console. However, reporting published from July through September 2026 describes SharpEmu and KytyPS5 as developing projects, not reliable substitutes for a PS5. Progress with a few titles does not show that a broad library will run, or that a particular PC can run a particular game.

On September 28, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported a SharpEmu developer update saying 55 games had been tested, 12 had reached in-game, and six were reported fully playable at 60 FPS. Those are developer-reported results for that tested sample, not an independent benchmark or a measure of the whole PS5 library. The same report noted bugs, visual glitches, and performance issues in both SharpEmu and KytyPS5.

Tom’s Hardware reported on July 15, 2026, that SharpEmu ran some 2D titles well and had booted some 3D titles, while 3D emulation was less mature. Its July 31 follow-up described selected 3D games with visual problems and uneven performance. These dated reports describe demonstrations and project progress; they do not establish how a specific game will perform on your PC.

Make the choice based on what you need
- You own a PS5 and want to play on another screen: Start with Remote Play. Confirm that your device and game are supported, and that your network can meet Sony’s stated speed requirements.
- You want a dedicated handheld-style screen for your PS5: Portal is a Remote Play client. Its standard Remote Play mode uses your paired PS5; its cloud-streaming mode is separate and requires PlayStation Plus Premium for selected titles.
- You want games to run locally on a PC: Emulation matches that goal in principle, but current compatibility is experimental. Check the relevant project’s current compatibility information before making plans around a particular game.
- You do not have a PS5: PS5 Remote Play is not a way to bypass console ownership; it streams from a PS5. Emulation does not require the PS5 to be the device running the software, but the cited reporting does not establish the game or firmware requirements for individual projects.
