BMC vs. IPMI: Features, Security, and Compatibility

A BMC is the embedded controller that manages a server out of band; IPMI is one management interface that a BMC may expose. They are not competing products or interchangeable terms. Redfish is another management interface that can coexist with IPMI, depending on the platform. Which interfaces and functions are available—and how securely they are implemented—depends on the specific hardware, firmware, and configuration.

What is the difference between a BMC and IPMI?

A baseboard management controller (BMC) is a controller or service embedded in a server or motherboard. It typically has its own processor or system-on-chip and firmware, allowing it to monitor and manage the system independently of the host operating system. The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI), by contrast, is an interface for platform management. In short, the BMC is the management controller; IPMI is one possible way to communicate with it. DMTF’s terminology and Redfish specification distinguish the terms.

A BMC does not necessarily support every management interface. Check the documentation for the exact server or motherboard model and firmware rather than assuming that the presence of a BMC guarantees IPMI or Redfish support.

How do IPMI and Redfish differ?

IPMI provides a platform-management interface. Redfish takes a RESTful approach and uses a schema-based data model for remote and out-of-band management, from individual systems to larger environments. The interface model can affect how administrators integrate management into scripts and fleet tooling, but the standards labels alone do not establish which option has more features or performs better on a particular system.

  • PCIe 3.0 Protocol: Equipped with 2 PCIe 3.0 X16 graphics card slots (with steel case), and 1 PCIe 3.0 X8, 2 PCIe 2.0 X1. The transfer rate can reach 15.754 GB/s. Equipped with 2 M.2 hard disk slots, which can achieve fast reading even if multiple programs are running
  • Stable Power Supply: The X99 Dual CPU motherboard use 24+8+8pin standard power supply interface, 8-phase power supply. Precise modularization provides good heat dissipation and makes the program run more stably
  • Strong Expandability: The X99 gaming motherboard is equipped with multiple expansion interfaces to ensure that the motherboard has more room for improvement, include 4*USB 3.0 ports, 2*USB 2.0 ports, 8*SATA 3.0 ports, 2*network ports

The interfaces are not necessarily alternatives. For example, Supermicro lists both IPMI and Redfish among its onboard BMC management features. That is an example of one vendor’s implementation, not evidence that every BMC supports both.

Security: what should administrators compare?

Security depends on the implementation, its firmware, configuration, exposed services, and network placement—not just on whether the interface is called IPMI or Redfish. Use current vendor guidance for the specific system, limit management access to trusted networks, and verify which services and functions are enabled.

The DMTF Redfish Specification DSP0266 version 1.20.1, dated April 3, 2024, requires implementations covered by that specification to support TLS 1.2 with RFC 7525 recommendations or later, and restricts supported cipher suites to those listed as “Recommended” in IANA’s TLS Cipher Suites registry. This is a requirement in that specific Redfish specification version; it should not be treated as a description of every older implementation or a guarantee about a particular BMC’s configuration.

Intel’s IPMI resource says IPMI promoters encourage vendors and IT managers to consider more modern systems-management interfaces that may offer better security, scalability, and features, citing DMTF Redfish as an example. That recommendation is not a quantified security comparison and does not establish that adopting Redfish alone makes a deployment secure.

Compatibility: how to check a server or motherboard

For administrators choosing a management tool—or shopping for a server motherboard with an IPMI BMC—verify compatibility at the model and firmware level. A standards name does not guarantee that a platform implements the protocol version or the operations your workflow needs.

  1. Identify the exact platform. Record the server or motherboard model and hardware revision, if applicable.
  2. Check the vendor’s documentation. Confirm which interfaces the platform supports—IPMI, Redfish, or both—and whether support depends on a particular firmware version.
  3. Match functions to your workflow. Confirm that the interface exposes the specific monitoring or management operations required by your tools; do not infer them from the protocol name alone.
  4. Validate deployment requirements. Review the vendor’s firmware and configuration guidance, including which management services are enabled and how access is controlled.

Which management model fits your environment?

Choose based on the interface your platform actually implements, the functions it exposes, and the tools already used in your environment. Existing scripts may make continued IPMI use practical where it is supported; a RESTful, schema-based Redfish interface may suit tooling designed around that model. For a fleet, verify support and required operations across every relevant model and firmware version before standardizing. The cited sources do not establish a universal winner on features, security, or performance.
