When an index changes a company’s membership or weighting, portfolios that track or benchmark against it may adjust their holdings. That can concentrate trading around the change’s effective date, but it does not establish net buying in a particular stock or guarantee that its price will rise or fall. The rules and calendar vary by index family, so a FTSE/JSE review schedule should not be applied to Russell US indexes or other FTSE indexes.
What index rebalancing changes
An index provider applies an index’s methodology to decide which securities belong in the index and, in some cases, how heavily each is weighted. A review can add or remove a security, move it between size or style indexes, or change its shares, free-float or investability weighting.

Review notices may set out a data or ranking cut-off, announce changes, publish calculation factors and specify when changes become effective. For example, FTSE/JSE’s June 2026 review notice set 22 June 2026 as the effective date, with changes applied from the start of trading. That date applies to that review, not to all FTSE indexes. See FTSE/JSE index notices.

How a benchmark change can affect stock demand
A portfolio designed to track an index may adjust its holdings when the benchmark’s constituents or weights change. If a company is added or its weight rises, a close tracker may need a larger target holding. If it is removed or its weight falls, the target may shrink. FTSE Russell announcements include constituent deletions and investability-weight changes. View FTSE Russell index announcements.
This is a replication mechanism, not a prediction of a specific trade. Portfolios differ in how closely they track, their rules, their existing holdings and their execution choices. Some may trade ahead of implementation; others may trade on or after the effective date. Disclosure timing, liquidity and execution strategy all matter. The available event figures do not quantify net flows into each affected stock.

Why trading can cluster around an effective date
When many portfolios respond to the same announced benchmark changes, activity can concentrate near implementation, particularly in closing auctions used to align holdings with index weights. LSEG’s 2026 Russell US Indexes Reconstitution Key Facts reports that $102.5 billion traded on Nasdaq and $114.7 billion on the NYSE on the 2025 Russell reconstitution effective day. Those are venue-wide trading totals—not purchases of a particular stock, net buying, or a stock-level flow estimate. LSEG also says methodology enhancements, including use of the Nasdaq closing cross, have reduced reconstitution impact. Read LSEG’s 2026 reconstitution facts.

High aggregate volume therefore shows that substantial trading occurred across the venues during the event; it does not show which affected stock received net demand or whether the activity changed its value permanently.
Does inclusion make a stock’s price go up?
Not reliably. A peer-reviewed study, Russell index reconstitutions and short interest, found short-term price pressure for additions to the Russell 2000 and a persistent increase in short interest after reconstitution, which the authors interpret as a lasting liquidity enhancement. Those findings concern the study’s Russell 2000 sample and research design; they do not establish a universal effect for FTSE indexes or guarantee a lasting price move. Read the study.
Price responses can depend on what the market anticipated, the size of the benchmark-weight change, liquidity, execution and the broader market. An addition, deletion or large volume print alone is not proof of a predictable or durable price direction.

Why the index family and calendar matter
FTSE Russell operates distinct index families, each with its own methodology and review schedule. A notice for FTSE/JSE is not a calendar for Russell US, FTSE 100 or every other FTSE index. For any specific event, check the current ground rules and notice for the exact index and distinguish the planned announcement from the final effective change.
Russell US indexes moved from annual to semi-annual reconstitution in 2026. LSEG says the second reconstitution applies construction rules to the size indexes. At that event, Russell US Style Index changes are limited to new additions and membership moves between Russell 1000 and Russell 2000; full style changes continue in June. This applies to Russell US indexes, not FTSE index families generally. Read LSEG’s Russell reconstitution update.

Methodology choices can also change how many securities enter or leave and the percentage of index turnover, with different effects for Russell 1000 and Russell 2000. Comparing events is most useful when the index family, rules and event type match. See LSEG’s methodology discussion.
Quick Recap
How to assess a particular rebalancing event
- Identify the index family. Confirm whether the event concerns FTSE/JSE, Russell US or another index, and consult that index’s methodology and current notice.
- Check the dates and status. Note the review cut-off, announcement, any factor publication and effective date. Verify whether a notice has been updated and whether a security has special treatment.
- Separate membership from weight. Record additions and deletions as well as changes to investability or constituent weights; they can imply different portfolio adjustments.
- Consider trading conditions. Liquidity and the relevant market’s closing-auction structure affect how concentrated execution may be.
- Classify the evidence correctly. Venue-wide volume, estimated stock-level flows and measured price effects answer different questions. Do not treat one as a substitute for another.
