To run the original GW-BASIC interpreter on a modern computer, run its DOS executable inside a DOS emulator such as DOSBox. For many programs that do not depend on machine-code routines or DOS-specific behavior, PC-BASIC is a simpler alternative designed to emulate GW-BASIC 3.23. If your goal is to adapt the source and build a native application, QB64 Phoenix Edition may help, but it is a different BASIC dialect rather than a drop-in GW-BASIC runtime.
Choose the right way to run your GW-BASIC program
| Option | Best for | What it runs | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOSBox | Keeping the original DOS interpreter and environment, especially for programs that use machine code or DOS behavior | The GW-BASIC DOS executable within an emulated DOS environment | You need a copy of the interpreter, and setup varies by operating system and DOSBox version. |
| PC-BASIC | Running BASIC programs in a modern interpreter without setting up DOS emulation | A modern interpreter that aims to emulate GW-BASIC 3.23 | It does not emulate a CPU or DOS; machine-code routines and some DOS-specific behavior are unsupported. |
| QB64 Phoenix Edition | Adapting source code and compiling a native program | A separate BASIC implementation with QBasic/QuickBASIC compatibility | GW-BASIC compatibility is not guaranteed; dialect differences and hardware-dependent code may require changes. |
There is no universal compatibility percentage for old GW-BASIC programs. The right choice depends on whether your program uses graphics, sound, file handling, memory access, machine code, or DOS-specific features, and whether you need an interpreted legacy program or a native executable.
How do I run GW-BASIC on Windows 10 or 11?
Windows 10 and 11 are 64-bit operating systems on many current PCs, while the original GW-BASIC interpreter is a 16-bit DOS program. The GW-BASIC hub says it does not run directly on modern 64-bit Windows and recommends running it through DOSBox. In practical terms, DOSBox provides the DOS-like environment in which the original interpreter can run; it is not a Windows-native version of GW-BASIC.
- Install DOSBox for your operating system, following the instructions for the DOSBox version you choose.
- Obtain a legitimate copy of the GW-BASIC DOS executable. The existence of historical source code does not itself provide a ready-to-run executable.
- Use DOSBox to access the folder containing the interpreter and your program, then start GW-BASIC from within the emulated DOS environment.
- Open or run your
.BASprogram using the interpreter and check its behavior, especially if it relies on peripherals, graphics, sound, or DOS features.
Exact DOSBox commands and setup steps depend on the DOSBox version and host operating system; the available documentation does not establish one set of instructions for every configuration. The original Microsoft guide describes GW-BASIC as an interpreter used with MS-DOS and says that its documented version requires MS-DOS 3.2 or later. That is a historical requirement for the version covered by the guide, not a modern Windows compatibility statement. See the GW-BASIC hub’s DOSBox and interpreter guidance and the digitized Microsoft GW-BASIC User’s Guide.

In Windows 11/10 systems, there has many show/hide options in File Explorer, so after opening "Windows File Explorer," you may not see the drive icon named "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)". Please open "Devices and Printers," right-click on the drive icon named "TEACV0.0" under "Devices," hover the cursor over "Browse Files," and then click on "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)," then you will see the contents of your disks
- Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
Can I run old GW-BASIC .BAS files without DOS?
Often, you can try PC-BASIC, a modern interpreter whose documentation says it aims to faithfully emulate GW-BASIC 3.23. It can be a more convenient route when the program mainly uses BASIC language features implemented by PC-BASIC and does not depend on machine code or DOS internals. Consult PC-BASIC’s current documentation and unsupported-feature list before relying on a particular program.
PC-BASIC does not emulate DOS or a CPU. Its documentation is explicit: “Therefore, it is not possible to run machine code on PC-BASIC.” A program that calls machine-code subroutines, accesses hardware or memory directly, or relies on DOS-specific IOCTL behavior may not work as intended. For programs that require machine-code execution, the PC-BASIC documentation points to full CPU emulation such as DOSBox, Bochs, or VirtualBox. Read the PC-BASIC documentation for implementation details and limitations.

When should I port the program with QB64 Phoenix Edition?
QB64 Phoenix Edition is worth considering when you want to adapt a program rather than preserve the original GW-BASIC runtime. Its project describes QB64 as an extended BASIC that retains QBasic/QuickBASIC compatibility and compiles native binaries. It documents Windows 7 and later, Linux, and macOS Catalina and later as supported platforms; check the current release documentation for up-to-date requirements.
QB64 is not documented as a drop-in GW-BASIC interpreter. The GW-BASIC hub says QuickBASIC 4.5 can handle many, but not all, GW-BASIC programs, which is a useful warning against assuming that related BASIC dialects are interchangeable. Review the source for differences in commands, graphics and sound behavior, file handling, memory access, and hardware dependencies, then test the changed program.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Microsoft’s GW-BASIC repository include a runnable program?
No. Microsoft’s open-source repository contains historical interpreter source code identified as the interpreter as of 1983. Microsoft says the repository is maintained as a historical reference and “contains no build scripts, makefiles, or tools required to generate executable binaries, nor does it contain any pre-built binaries / executables”. The files are released under the MIT License, but the repository is not a ready-to-run Windows interpreter or a turnkey build kit. See the Microsoft GW-BASIC repository.

Which option should you try first?
- Choose DOSBox if preserving the original interpreter or relying on machine-code and DOS behavior matters.
- Try PC-BASIC if you want a modern interpreter and the program appears to use supported BASIC features rather than machine code or DOS internals.
- Choose QB64 Phoenix Edition if you are prepared to review and adapt the source, and want to compile a native application rather than run the original interpreter.
The GW-BASIC hub identifies version 3.23 as the last official commercial release, but its page gives conflicting years for that release, so a single year should not be treated as settled. Whichever route you choose, test the actual program: compatibility depends on the code’s features and assumptions, not just the .BAS extension.
