What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by checking Settings > Battery to find what is using power. Then try the changes that best match what you see: dim the display and enable Auto-Brightness, use Low Power Mode when you need extra runtime, and check Battery Health if drain persists. Menu names and feature availability vary by iPhone model and iOS version.
1. Find what is draining the battery
Before changing several settings, open Settings > Battery. Review any Suggestions or Insights, then check Daily Usage and app activity. Daily Usage compares the current day with the previous seven days, which can help you spot an unusual change or an app that is using more power than expected. Apple notes that battery life depends in part on how the device is used and which apps are running. Apple’s battery-drain guidance explains these screens.

If an app or background activity stands out, address that first—for example, reduce how often you use a power-hungry app or review its background activity. Battery Insights may also identify ongoing software-update or device-setup work. Drain and warmth during that activity can be temporary; check again after it finishes before concluding that a setting or the battery itself is at fault.

2. Reduce display power use
Dim the screen and enable Auto-Brightness
A bright display can use substantial power. Lower brightness in Control Center or go to Settings > Display & Brightness. To let the ambient-light sensor adjust brightness to your surroundings, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Auto-Brightness. Apple cautions that “Turning off Auto-Brightness may increase power consumption.” Apple’s brightness guidance describes the sensor and manual adjustment.
Shorten how long the screen stays on
If the display often remains on while the phone is idle, choose a shorter interval under Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. The shorter the interval, the sooner the display turns off after inactivity; choose one that still suits how you use the phone.

Check Apple’s model-specific display guidance if you do not see the setting.

5. Check whether battery condition is the issue
If battery life remains poor after you have checked usage and adjusted relevant settings, look at battery condition. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the screen shows Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement. This indicates a battery-condition issue, not one that ordinary settings changes can fix. See Apple’s battery guidance for next steps.
