Use your Linux distribution’s package manager for packages from its configured repositories; consider Dell System Update (DSU) for Dell Update Packages on supported PowerEdge servers. They serve different hardware and software sources, so neither is a universal replacement for the other. For Dell client PCs, Dell Command | Update is a separate utility, and Dell BIOS updates on Linux follow model-specific routes.
What each update tool manages
Linux package managers
Tools such as apt, dnf, and zypper install and update packages supplied by the repositories configured for your Linux distribution. Use the package manager for the operating system and repository software it manages. Its repository role does not establish that it provides every model-specific Dell firmware or hardware update.
Dell System Update
Dell describes DSU as a script-optimized deployment tool for applying Dell Update Packages (DUPs) to PowerEdge servers. Its guide covers Dell applications, firmware, and drivers for Linux and Windows, with updates drawn from a catalog or repository. DSU supports scripted management and online or offline workflows; consult Dell’s DSU 2.2.0.0 guide and current DSU support information for applicable releases and systems.
Dell Command | Update is different
Dell Command | Update (DCU) is a separate utility for supported Dell client computers. Dell describes it as a way to identify, apply, and schedule updates for drivers, BIOS, firmware, and applications, with user-interface and command-line workflows. It is not another name for DSU, and its Windows client workflow should not be assumed to apply to Linux. Check the DCU reference guide and Dell’s DCU usage guidance for model and environment applicability.

Which should you use?
| Situation | Best starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Linux desktop or laptop; OS and applications from distribution repositories | Your distribution’s package manager | Whether a separate Dell-specific firmware update is needed; repository coverage alone does not settle that. |
| Dell PowerEdge server running Linux; Dell firmware, drivers, or other DUPs | Check DSU and the applicable Dell catalog or repository | Server model, Linux support, DSU release, and component applicability. |
| Dell client computer; Dell driver, BIOS, or firmware workflow | Check DCU and Dell’s support page for the model | Supported model and operating environment; do not assume the client utility applies to Linux. |
| Dell computer running Linux; BIOS update | Use Dell’s model-appropriate Linux BIOS instructions | Whether the model supports the chosen update route. |
| PowerEdge fleet, offline image, or scripted rollout | Evaluate DSU with the appropriate Dell catalog or repository | Release, operating-system support, and component compatibility before deployment. |
The useful comparison is not “which updater is better?” but which source owns the update you need. A package manager handles its configured distribution repositories; DSU targets Dell packages in a PowerEdge deployment workflow. They can complement one another on a server.
Do you need Dell System Update on Ubuntu?
Not simply because the computer runs Ubuntu. For a desktop or laptop, use the distribution package manager for Ubuntu repository packages, then check Dell’s instructions for any model-specific BIOS or firmware update. DSU is principally positioned for PowerEdge server deployments, not as a general Ubuntu desktop updater.

Dell’s DSU support page lists Ubuntu 22.04.2 and 24.04 among supported Linux versions, alongside selected RHEL and SLES releases. The same page says DSU is designed to work with community distributions such as Debian, but Debian is not part of the enumerated validated operating-system list. These version-sensitive details can change; check the current DSU support matrix and release notes for your server and OS before installing or deploying it.
Can apt update Dell firmware?
apt updates packages available from the Ubuntu repositories configured on the system. That does not mean it supplies every Dell-specific firmware or BIOS update for a particular model. Check Dell’s support information for the device and the component you intend to update rather than treating apt and Dell’s update catalogs as interchangeable.

How to update a Dell BIOS from Linux
Dell says its BIOS update .exe files do not run directly on Ubuntu or other Linux distributions. Dell documents two routes; availability depends on the computer model. Follow the Dell Linux BIOS update instructions for the exact system.
Option 1: USB flash drive
Dell describes bootable USB media as a route for its computers. The instructions call for a USB flash drive of at least 512 MB, the correct BIOS file for the computer, and access to BIOS setup. Create the bootable media as Dell directs, boot from it, and complete the update using the on-screen process. Confirm the model and BIOS package before proceeding.

Option 2: Firmware Update-Over-the-Air or Remote Update
This route is available only on computers that support Firmware Update-Over-the-Air (FOTA) or Remote Update. Dell describes newer computers, typically from 2020 or later, as candidates, but age alone does not confirm support. Verify the exact model’s documentation before relying on this method.

- Identify the system and component. Confirm whether the target is a PowerEdge server or client PC and whether the update is for an OS package, driver, BIOS, or other firmware.
- Confirm model and OS support. Use the applicable Dell support page and DSU/DCU documentation; support varies by system, operating system, and release.
- Use the applicable source. Select the distribution repository for distribution packages and Dell’s applicable package, catalog, or instructions for Dell-specific updates.
- Read package prerequisites. Dell describes a DUP as a self-contained executable package for an individual software element, including BIOS, system firmware, and device drivers. Its DUP documentation says packages are digitally signed using SHA256 or greater, with signature and hash validation before installation; an invalid package will not install.
- For fleet or offline deployment, validate before rollout. Confirm the catalog or repository, DSU release, OS support, and component applicability for the target machines before scripting deployment.
Bottom line: match the updater to the update source
For ordinary Linux repository packages, use the distribution package manager. For Dell Update Packages on supported PowerEdge servers, evaluate DSU and Dell’s applicable catalog or repository. For a Dell client PC, check DCU only where the model and operating environment are supported; for Linux BIOS updates, follow Dell’s model-specific USB or supported FOTA/Remote Update instructions.
