If a Mastery Camo challenge in Modern Warfare looks stuck, first check the exact challenge and its prerequisites, then compare the challenge counter with the mastery progress display and the camo’s unlock state. They can point to different problems: Activision has documented both inaccurate MWIII mastery-progress displays and separate challenge-tracking defects. The examples below are specific to Modern Warfare III (MWIII); MWII, other modes, and other weapons can have different requirements.
Why are my Mastery Camo challenges not tracking?
There is no single confirmed fix for every camo progression issue. The cause may be an unmet prerequisite, a requirement being completed in the wrong mode or with the wrong weapon, a misleading progress display, or a game-side tracking defect. Start with the challenge’s exact wording in your game rather than assuming that a requirement from another title or mode applies.

First distinguish the counter from the summary display
Check the specific challenge counter, the reward’s unlock state, and any mastery summary separately. Call of Duty’s MWIII Season 2 notes, published in March 2024, say the studio resolved “a visual bug in which progression for Weapon Mastery camo challenges was not displayed accurately.” That history shows a display problem has occurred; it does not prove that a current stuck counter is only cosmetic.
Tracking defects have also occurred
The same March 2024 notes describe fixes to particular tracking conditions: missing laser attachments were added to Gilded tracking for Marksman Rifles, Juggernaut Recon kills were corrected for challenge tracking, and a March 13 update corrected a Priceless challenge for the SOA Subverter. These are historical, specific examples—not evidence that the same defect explains another weapon’s current behavior.

Check the game, mode, weapon, and camo path
Modern Warfare II (MWII) and MWIII do not share one universal camo path, and Multiplayer and Zombies have separate requirements. Activision’s camo-system overview lays out the distinctions:

Requirements vary by weapon and mode. Open the relevant weapon’s camo track in the game you are playing and verify the stated action, weapon, mode, and tier prerequisite before testing progress. In MWIII Multiplayer, Weapon Mastery challenges are associated with Completionist camos; the separate Zombies tracks use their own completionist sequence.

How to troubleshoot a stuck camo challenge
- Record the exact challenge. Note the game (MWII or MWIII), mode (Multiplayer or Zombies), weapon, camo tier, platform, and the full requirement shown in-game. This prevents mixing requirements between games or modes.
- Verify the prerequisite tier or condition. Do not rely only on a lower camo appearing unlocked or complete; check the next challenge’s stated requirement. Activision’s MWIII Known Issues page, shown as updated August 7, 2026, identifies one specific example: for the SOA Subverter, “In order to begin progression on the Gilded Camo for this weapon, you will need to complete the Dopamine Camo requirements (15 Operator Headshots).” The entry notes that Dopamine may appear unlocked and complete. This instruction applies to that named case, not every camo challenge.
- Perform the exact condition in the correct context. Match the challenge wording for mode, weapon category, action, and any other stated condition. A similar action with a different weapon or in another mode may not count.
- Compare progress indicators after a match. Check whether the specific challenge counter changed and whether the camo reward unlocked. If only the mastery summary appears inconsistent, treat it as a possible display discrepancy, not a confirmed diagnosis.
- Check official issue listings. Use Activision’s MWIII support page to find current Known Issues and the Feedback and Bug Reporting route. If the exact counter remains unchanged after you meet the displayed requirement and the issue is not listed, report it with the title, platform, mode, weapon, camo tier, requirement, progress before and after a match, and whether the reward unlocked.
What if the challenge is complete but the camo will not unlock?
Confirm that the relevant tier and its prerequisite are both satisfied in the same game and mode, then inspect the reward’s unlock state rather than relying on a summary number. The SOA Subverter Gilded issue is an official example of a prerequisite that can block progression even when a preceding camo appears complete. If the listed condition and prerequisite are met but the reward stays locked, check the current Known Issues page and submit a report if it is not covered.

The official records cited here establish in-game requirements, historical game-side corrections, and a reporting route. They do not establish that reinstalling the game, changing controllers, clearing a cache, or buying an accessory fixes camo tracking. Avoid spending time or money on those steps as if they were confirmed solutions to this issue.
