Buy an Echo Dot if you mainly want Alexa by voice for music, timers, alarms and smart-home commands, especially in a bedroom, office or bathroom. Buy an Echo Show if you want a screen for visual answers, video, calls or tap-to-control smart-home panels. “Echo Show” is a family, not one device, so the model you pick matters as much as the choice of Show over Dot.
The short decision guide
| If you want… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A compact, voice-only Alexa speaker for another room | Echo Dot | Amazon’s buying guide positions it for bedrooms, offices and bathrooms, and for adding Echo devices to multiple rooms. |
| Visual information, video, video calls or on-screen smart-home controls | Echo Show | The display and camera enable these features on the Show models covered here. |
| A built-in smart-home hub | Echo Show 8 (per Amazon’s guide) | Amazon describes a hub for Zigbee, Matter and Thread devices. The Dot is listed for Matter support, which is not the same thing. |
| A big-screen kitchen or wall display | Larger Show models | Amazon lists the Echo Show 21 (2024) with a 21.4-inch 1080p touch display. |
Which Echo Show are we talking about?
The Show line spans very different sizes. Amazon’s developer specifications list the Echo Show 21 (2024) with a 21.4-inch, 1080p touch display (page last updated November 5, 2025). Amazon’s buying guide describes the Show 8 with an 8-inch HD screen. For a Dot comparison, the Show 8 is the practical midpoint. Amazon’s 2025 guide covers the Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 together, including a 13-megapixel camera. If you want a larger screen, look at the Show 11 or bigger models.
Screen, camera and calls
This is the real dividing line. The Show’s display handles visual information, video, video calls and direct smart-home controls. A Dot does all of its work by voice, so you only ask and listen.
Ask yourself whether you will actually look at a screen in that spot. A Dot suits a bedside table or desk. A Show takes more counter space, and its screen size affects how far away you can comfortably read it.

Sound: what the specs say
No listening tests were done for this comparison, so there is no claim here about which sounds better. The published hardware differs:
- Echo Dot (5th Gen, 2022 release): one 1.73-inch front-firing speaker, per the Amazon Canada listing. That is the only Dot listing reviewed, so confirm the variant in your own marketplace.
- Echo Show 8: Amazon’s buying guide describes spatial audio, two 2-inch stereo speakers and a passive bass radiator. The 2025 guide mentions an updated stereo audio architecture.
A stereo pair with a bass radiator is a different design from a single front-firing driver. How that sounds in your room is something independent reviews, or a return window, can settle.

Smart-home support
Amazon’s Matter documentation (last updated May 1, 2026) lists Echo Dot (2nd Gen and newer), Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 among Matter-enabled devices, with categories such as lighting and smart plugs.
“Supports Matter” and “contains a built-in hub” are separate claims. Amazon’s buying guide describes the Show 8 as having a built-in hub for Zigbee, Matter and Thread. Before buying, check the exact Echo model and the exact accessory you plan to connect, particularly if it uses Zigbee or Thread.

Privacy and camera controls
On the Echo Show 8 and Show 11 (2025 releases), Amazon says the camera is used for Live View, Drop In video, Visual ID, adaptive content, presence detection and personalized reminders. Disabling it affects those features. Drop In from outside your household works only with approved contacts.
Visual ID is opt-in. Amazon says it uses on-device facial recognition for personalization, and you can delete your Visual ID or temporarily turn it off with the camera/microphone control. If a camera in a bedroom or kitchen is a dealbreaker, that is a point in the Dot’s favor.

Alexa+ and software caveats
Amazon says the new Show 8 and Show 11 were “built from the ground up for Alexa+ and are Amazon’s most advanced smart displays.” That is Amazon’s own description, not an independent assessment. Amazon’s 2025 guide also says Alexa+ experiences are rolling out over time, so don’t assume every feature is available on day one or in your country.
Price and availability
Prices and stock vary by marketplace and change often, so check current listings for your region. Don’t assume a particular price gap. Also confirm the exact model and generation on the page before you order.
