Best NVIDIA Control Panel Settings for Smooth Gameplay

No single preset suits every game. Here's what Low Latency Mode, power management, V-Sync and G-SYNC really do, and how to apply them per game.

There is no single NVIDIA Control Panel preset that makes every game smooth on every GPU, driver and monitor. NVIDIA’s own documentation doesn’t claim one, and it doesn’t offer comparative testing of current games. What the documentation does support is a short list of settings that matter, each with a trade-off: Low Latency Mode, Power management mode, Vertical sync and G-SYNC. This guide explains what each one does, when to change it, and how to apply it to one game without touching the rest.

Start with scope: global vs. per-game settings

In Manage 3D Settings, the Global Settings tab applies broadly. The Program Settings tab holds per-game profiles. NVIDIA says settings for a particular game or application are applied automatically when that program launches, per its Manage 3D Settings help page.

  1. Right-click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Go to 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings.
  3. Choose the Program Settings tab and select the game from the dropdown (use Add if it isn’t listed).
  4. Select a setting, choose its value, and click Apply, as described in NVIDIA’s default-setting instructions.

Rule of thumb: leave Global at defaults, and put anything that helps one title but might hurt another in that game’s profile. Option names and availability can vary with driver version, GPU, display and connection, so what you see may differ slightly from this guide.

Low Latency Mode: input lag vs. throughput

NVIDIA’s reference says Low Latency Mode “reduces latency by limiting the number of frames the CPU can prepare before the frames are processed by the GPU.”

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Option What NVIDIA says it does Typical reason to choose it
Off Lets the game queue frames, prioritizing throughput Maximum throughput matters more than responsiveness
On Limits queued frames to one Competitive or fast-reaction games where input delay is noticeable
Ultra Fully minimizes queued frames Same as On, when you want the smallest queue

This is a latency-versus-throughput choice. It is not a guaranteed FPS boost, and it won’t fix every kind of stutter, such as shader compilation hitches or a CPU bottleneck. Test it per game: set it, play a familiar section, and keep the setting only if the game feels better.

Power management mode: consistency vs. power use

The same reference lists four behaviors:

  • Driver-controlled (Optimal power): the driver decides.
  • Adaptive: saves power when the GPU isn’t busy.
  • Prefer maximum performance: favors performance over power saving.
  • Prefer consistent performance: holds a consistent performance state, which NVIDIA says is often used for reproducible development and tuning.

“Prefer maximum performance” is a reasonable thing to try in a single game profile if you see the GPU clocking down mid-game and frame rate dipping. It isn’t a universal fix. It costs power and heat, and it does little if the bottleneck is elsewhere. Avoid applying it globally just because it sounds faster.

Vertical sync: tearing vs. performance

NVIDIA describes Vertical sync as synchronizing the application’s frame rate with the display’s refresh rate to eliminate tearing. Its reference says Off suits cases where performance matters more than image quality, and On suits eliminating tearing. Adaptive options appear only with certain monitor technology choices, so check what your system exposes.

  • Tearing bothers you and you have a fixed-refresh monitor: turn V-Sync On for that game.
  • You want the lowest delay and tolerate tearing: leave it Off.
  • You have a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display: see the next section, since variable refresh changes the picture.

G-SYNC: only if your display supports it

G-SYNC is hardware-dependent. NVIDIA’s setup steps require a G-SYNC-capable or G-SYNC Compatible display, set up as the primary display. Its G-SYNC page covers the feature itself; the help pages don’t establish that every variable-refresh monitor is validated.

  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
  1. Open Display > Set up G-SYNC.
  2. Tick the option to enable G-SYNC / G-SYNC Compatible, and select the display mode that applies (full screen only, or windowed and full screen).
  3. Go to 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings and confirm Monitor Technology is set to G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible. NVIDIA’s instructions say to make sure of this explicitly.
  4. Click Apply.

NVIDIA has reported up to 20% lower end-to-end system latency using V-Sync On, Ultra Low Latency Mode and G-SYNC together, in a 2019 GeForce News post. That is a vendor-reported result for NVIDIA’s described configuration. It is not an independent test or a promise for your system. You don’t need to buy a new monitor to adjust the other settings here.

A sensible way to test

  • Change one setting at a time, in one game’s Program Settings profile.
  • Judge with the same scene each time, ideally one where you’ve noticed the problem.
  • If a change doesn’t help, set it back to the default value rather than stacking tweaks.
  • If stutter persists, the cause may lie outside the Control Panel, such as the game’s own settings, CPU load, storage or drivers.

These steps follow NVIDIA’s documentation, which dates from before the current driver generation in places. This guide hasn’t benchmarked the settings in games, so treat the choices as options to try, not guaranteed gains.
