Fortnite Creative lets you build islands inside Fortnite using its in-game creation tools. Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) is a separate, PC-only editor with Unreal Engine workflows for more detailed environments and gameplay. You can also use both: Epic’s Live Edit feature lets you change a UEFN project in Creative while playtesting. Either way, publishing goes through Creator Portal.
What is the difference between Fortnite Creative and UEFN?
The main difference is where and how you create. Creative is Fortnite’s in-game toolset; UEFN is a PC application for building Fortnite projects with Unreal Engine tools. Epic describes Creative as a sandbox for creating and saving island experiences. UEFN offers more control over terrain, props, landscapes and mechanics, along with tools for lighting, visual effects and animation. See Epic’s Creative and UEFN comparison and UEFN overview.

Which should you use?
Choose Creative for in-game building
Start with Creative if you want to work inside Fortnite, use its in-game tools, or create on a platform Epic lists for Creative without installing a PC-only editor. Epic’s current installation guide lists Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Series X, PlayStation 4 and 5, Android, iOS and PC; check the guide for current platform availability. Epic’s installation guide also describes Creative as a way to create and save an island experience using the Creative toolset.

Consider UEFN for deeper environment and gameplay work
UEFN is the better fit if you have a suitable PC and want Unreal Engine workflows for more detailed worldbuilding, lighting, visual effects, animation or Verse-based gameplay logic. Its extra control comes with a different workflow: you work in a separate editor, rather than doing everything inside Fortnite. Review Epic’s current UEFN system requirements before buying or upgrading hardware. Requirements can change, so use the live page rather than relying on old specification lists.
#1 Best Overall
- Code for Bonus Virtual Item Included – Tooth Pick Pickaxe
- Hall Effect Thumbsticks and Triggers – Contact-free magnetic sensors in the thumbsticks and triggers provide a more fluid pro-level feel to help with precision and longevity
- Low Latency Wireless – Play wirelessly on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 using the included Wireless USB Adapter
- Advanced Gaming Buttons – Get an edge over the competition with 4 mappable buttons that you can program on the fly, mid-game—no system settings to configure
- 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
Use both when iteration helps
You do not have to treat the tools as mutually exclusive. Epic’s Live Edit documentation describes making immediate changes in Creative to a UEFN project during playtesting. That supports an iterative workflow: build or adjust in UEFN, test, and make relevant changes in Creative.
What scripting does UEFN support?
UEFN includes a Verse code editor for custom gameplay logic. Do not assume that UEFN includes every scripting feature found in the full Unreal Engine editor: Epic’s comparison documentation says Blueprint visual scripting is not available for gameplay or other custom scripts in UEFN. If a project depends on a particular scripting approach, check the current feature documentation before planning around it.

What do you need to install UEFN?
UEFN runs on PCs only. Epic’s installation guide publishes minimum and recommended requirements, including operating system, memory, graphics and storage. Check those specifications for the current version before choosing hardware. You do not need to buy a new PC just to use Fortnite Creative; that hardware question applies if you decide to develop with UEFN.

Both creation routes lead to Creator Portal, but the project preparation begins in the tool you use. Epic’s Creative publishing guide and UEFN publishing guide describe the process. In Creator Portal, creators provide island details and media, complete the IARC rating questionnaire, set visibility and submit the release for moderation. Epic’s UEFN publishing documentation says a publisher must be 18 or older.

Creator-program eligibility can change. Epic’s May 4, 2023 announcement described requirements at that time, including an Epic account at least 30 days old and island-editing activity on at least seven of the previous 30 days. Those are historical details, not a guarantee of current eligibility; check Creator Portal for the rules that apply when you enroll.
