XAML Studioは、WinUIベースのXAMLを独立した画面で素早く試作し、うまくいったコードをVisual Studioのアプリへ移すためのツールです。レイアウトやコントロール、バインディングを小さく試す場として使い、実際のアプリでの確認や実行時の調査はVisual Studioの機能と組み合わせるのが効果的です。
XAML Studioは何に使うツール？
公式プロジェクトはXAML Studioを、WinUIベースのXAMLを素早く試作し、その結果をVisual Studio内のアプリへコピーできるツールと説明しています。アプリ全体を作るIDEの代わりというより、UIの一部分を切り出して試すための作業場所です。XAML Studio公式GitHubリポジトリ
たとえば、配置やコントロールの組み合わせを試し、表示を確認しながらXAMLを調整できます。単に画面が表示されるかを見るだけでなく、データコンテキストエディターやバインディングデバッガーを使って、データがどのように画面へ結び付いているかも確認できます。
試作を最大限に活用するワークフロー
- 課題を小さく切り出す。画面全体を再現するのではなく、確認したいレイアウト、コントロール、または簡単なバインディングに絞って試します。
- XAMLを編集し、表示とデータを確認する。ライブ編集と操作で見た目を調整し、必要に応じてデータコンテキストエディターやバインディングデバッガーを使います。IntelliSense、ドキュメントツールボックス、配置ガイド、名前空間ヘルパーも作業を支援します。
- 使える断片を本体のVisual Studioプロジェクトへ移す。XAML Studioが想定するのは試作からVisual Studioへの統合です。プロジェクトに取り込んだ後は、アプリ本来の構成やデータに合わせて調整します。
- 対象アプリで動作を確認する。試作画面だけで完成と判断せず、実際のアプリを実行して、対象環境での表示やデータとの連携を確かめます。実行中UIの変更・検査にはVisual Studioのランタイムツールを組み合わせます。
自動保存と文書復元も公式リポジトリに記載された機能です。試行錯誤の作業を続けやすくするものであり、アプリ側での検証を置き換えるものではありません。

入手方法とバージョンの見分け方
通常利用の入手経路として、公式リポジトリはMicrosoft Storeを案内しています。同リポジトリではmainブランチをStore版v1.1に対応するものとし、v2の開発先をdevブランチとしています。したがって、Store版とソースからビルドする開発版は同じものとして扱わないでください。公式リポジトリのバージョン案内
Microsoftのオープンソース化告知も、告知時点で最後に公開されていたStore版を1.1、v2を開発中と説明しています。この告知は当時の状況を示すもので、現在のStore掲載状況や掲載バージョンを保証するものではありません。Microsoft .NET Blogのオープンソース化告知

ソースからビルドする場合
公式セットアップ案内の要件はVisual Studio 2022以降とWindows 10以降です。また、Visual StudioのWindowsアプリ開発ワークロード、Universal Windows Platform tools、Windows 17763 SDKが必要とされています。手順や構成上の注意は変更される可能性があるため、作業前に公式リポジトリのセットアップ案内を確認してください。
- 公式リポジトリをcloneし、devブランチへ切り替えます。
XAMLStudio.slnxをVisual Studioで開きます。XAMLStudioプロジェクトをスタートアッププロジェクトに設定して実行します。
ARM64 PCではARM64構成でビルド・実行するよう案内されています。リポジトリにはARM64関連の既知issueも記載されているため、問題が出た場合は公式のissue情報も確認してください。

XAML StudioとVisual StudioのXAML機能はどう使い分ける？
両者は一部の目的が重なりますが、同じ役割ではありません。XAML Studioは独立した試作場所として使い、Visual Studioの機能は本体プロジェクトでの編集や実行中アプリの確認に使うと整理できます。

Visual StudioのXAML Live Previewは、デスクトップアプリのUIをVisual Studio内に表示し、Hot Reloadによる変更を見ながら確認する機能です。ただし、対応プラットフォームや機能には差があります。アプリ領域が画面外にある場合は変更が反映されないことがあり、キャプチャを拒否する設定のウィンドウは利用できない場合もあります。詳細はMicrosoft LearnのXAML Live Preview説明を参照してください。
