Can Plex Media Optimizer Save Storage? What It Actually Does

Plex can pre-transcode media into a smaller playback version, but it saves library space only if the original is no longer retained. Here’s how the presets and storage trade-offs work.

Plex can create lower-bitrate versions of selected media ahead of playback, but that does not automatically save space in your library. Media Optimizer stores the result as a separate version; Plex’s documentation does not say it replaces or deletes the original. A new copy may be smaller than its source, but the library’s total storage use can rise unless you separately manage the original—and Plex publishes no benchmark showing terabytes saved.

Can Plex transcoding reduce storage?

It can reduce the size of an individual playback copy: Plex Media Optimizer pre-transcodes selected media using settings you choose, then saves the result as a different version. A lower-bitrate, lower-resolution version may take less space than the original, but the amount depends on the source file and chosen settings.

That distinction matters. Optimization creates a copy; Plex’s documentation does not describe it as an automatic replacement or deletion workflow. If you keep both versions, you have added a file rather than reclaimed the original’s space. To establish a net saving, compare actual before-and-after file sizes and account for what happens to the source.

Plex’s official optimizer documentation gives configuration options, not a storage-reduction benchmark or representative library measurements. Its preset bitrates are not evidence that a given library will save a particular number of gigabytes or terabytes. Plex Media Optimizer Overview

What Plex Media Optimizer is for

Pre-optimization can be useful when Plex’s server struggles to transcode during playback, when its upstream bandwidth is limited for remote viewers, or when you want prepared versions of recently added or On Deck content. Instead of creating a compatible stream on demand, the server can use a version prepared in advance.

This addresses playback workload and delivery constraints, not storage by itself. Plex identifies CPU, network, and storage as server constraints; transcoding can be CPU-intensive, and conversion also requires temporary disk space. Plex’s transcoding guide says the process uses temporary disk storage for converted media. That temporary working space is separate from both a completed optimized file and the media files retained in the library.

What the optimization presets change

Plex documents these options for optimized versions. Treat the figures as settings—not promises about the finished file’s size or quality on every title.

Optimized for Mobile 720p, 4 Mbps A Plex preset intended for mobile playback; actual output size varies by source.
Optimized for TV 1080p, 8 Mbps A Plex preset intended for TV playback; the bitrate is not a measured storage saving.
Original Quality No bitrate limit Does not impose a bitrate cap for the optimization.
Custom Profile and bitrate can be selected; bitrate selection is documented up to 20 Mbps Choose settings for the target client and content rather than assuming a fixed size reduction.

These settings address only part of the comparison. Client compatibility can also depend on container, video and audio formats, resolution, bitrate, and subtitle handling. Plex playback may Direct Play supported content, Direct Stream some content, or transcode media when the client cannot use it as-is. Plex’s media-format guide

For a meaningful size comparison, inspect the actual optimized file and note its video resolution and bitrate, audio and subtitle handling, and whether the intended Plex client can play it without another transcode.

How to create an optimized version

Plex allows optimization for an individual library item, a show or season, or a filtered selection. The exact controls can vary by Plex app and version, so consult Plex’s current instructions for the interface you use rather than relying on a universal click path.

  1. Choose the content. Select a media item, show or season, or a filtered group that you want to prepare.
  2. Choose an optimization quality. Select a documented preset or configure a custom profile and bitrate for the target device and network.
  3. Choose where Plex saves the version. Plex documents saving alongside originals in a Plex Versions folder or using a selected library-folder path. Check the destination’s available space before starting.
  4. Let the server finish the conversion. This is a transcoding task, so it uses server resources and temporary working space while it runs.
  5. Check the result and source separately. Compare the resulting file’s size with the original and verify which versions remain. Do not assume that optimization has removed the source.

Plex’s step-by-step instructions are in Creating Optimized Versions. Plex generally advises leaving transcoder quality and background preset settings at their defaults for most users; optimization quality is a separate choice for the versions you create. How to tell whether you actually saved space

Measure storage rather than estimating it from a preset label. For each test item, record the original’s size, the optimized file’s size, and which files remain afterward. If the original stays in the library, the optimized version’s smaller size is not a net library saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Original removed: compare the optimized file with the original to calculate the change for that item, while accounting for any other retained versions.
  • Original retained: count both files; the optimized file may be smaller, but total storage for that item has increased.
  • Conversion still running: distinguish temporary transcoding space from the final output file and the retained library.

A useful calculation is: original size minus optimized size equals the potential saving only if the original is no longer retained and no other copies are added. Summing measured results across a library can establish a library-specific total; extrapolating from a single preset bitrate cannot.

When optimization is—or is not—the right tool

Use Media Optimizer when advance preparation can solve a playback problem: for example, a server cannot comfortably convert a file in real time, or remote streaming is constrained by upstream bandwidth. If the client already Direct Plays the media and playback is reliable, creating another version may add storage without solving a problem.

If the objective is specifically to shrink the library, decide separately whether to retain or remove originals, and verify the optimized output before changing your source files. Plex’s optimizer documentation does not establish an automatic source-replacement policy or a guaranteed reduction in library size.

Plex also documents Downloads for offline viewing on supported mobile devices. That is a separate feature from maintaining optimized versions in a library; check the relevant app and account requirements in Downloads Overview and Downloads for iOS and Android Mobile.
