Telstra InfraCo lists its Sydney–Perth Direct route as ready for service as of September 2026. The official route listing does not state when it entered service, give its exact length or verify that it is Aura Network’s longest route—so those claims should not be treated as established.

What is Telstra’s Aura Network?

Aura Network is Telstra InfraCo’s intercity fibre backbone, previously called the Intercity Fibre Network. Telstra introduced the Aura name with its Sydney–Melbourne coastal route announcement on 21 October 2025. At that time, the company described a network of more than 5,000 kilometres, with plans to expand to nearly 14,000 kilometres over the following years. Those figures describe the overall network, not the Sydney–Perth route’s length. Telstra’s announcement gives that network context.

Is the Perth–Sydney route ready for service?

Yes. Telstra InfraCo’s route listing, current as of September 2026, includes Sydney–Perth Direct among Aura routes ready for service. The same list includes Sydney–Canberra–Melbourne Coastal, Sydney–Canberra Central and Adelaide–Wilmington Direct. The listing confirms service status, but does not provide a specific public launch date for Sydney–Perth Direct or rank it against other routes. See Telstra InfraCo’s Aura Network information.

The word “Direct” in the route name is not evidence of a particular physical path or distance. Telstra describes its route map as approximate and says rollout paths and kilometres may change or be phased. Its wider network page associates Perth and Sydney with data-centre, satellite-ground-station or teleport, and subsea-connection infrastructure, but that context does not establish the precise course or length of this fibre route.

How Aura’s network is designed

Telstra describes two broad path types in Aura:

  • Express: Uses Corning SMF-28 ULL with Advanced Bend fibre, designed for high-bandwidth links between capital cities and international submarine-cable landing stations.
  • Foundation: Uses Prysmian BBA2-LL low-loss fibre to upgrade connections between capital cities and improve access to regional Australia.

The design pairs a high-capacity intercity path with infrastructure intended to extend connectivity into regional and remote areas. Telstra’s May 2025 announcement about the first Intercity Fibre Network route, Sydney–Canberra coastal, described this dual-cable architecture and said that route was due to open on 25 June 2025. That earlier date applies to Sydney–Canberra coastal, not Sydney–Perth Direct. Read Telstra’s first-route announcement.

Who can buy Aura services?

Aura is a wholesale and enterprise network, not a consumer broadband plan. Telstra lists three service types for businesses and infrastructure customers, including enterprises, hyperscalers, government, carriers and service providers. Coverage depends on route feasibility and approval, while performance depends on the route and the customer’s equipment.

What the published capacity figures do—and do not—show

Telstra InfraCo has cited more than 83 Tbps per fibre pair for the Sydney–Melbourne ULL Express link. The company describes this as a desktop simulation, first conducted in May 2024 and repeated in its current network article and October 2025 brochure. It is not a measured speed for Sydney–Perth Direct or a guaranteed live-service capacity; actual bandwidth varies with route and customer equipment.

A separate Ciena report in 2026 described a transmission trial on the approximately 1,100-kilometre Melbourne–Sydney corridor. Ciena said Telstra transported four 400GbE client services over one wavelength without regeneration, using L-band on a live production network. That result concerns the Melbourne–Sydney corridor, not the Perth–Sydney route. Read Ciena’s report on the trial.

In May 2025, Telstra forecast that data demand could grow by more than 30 percent year on year through 2031. This was a company forecast, not a measured growth result. Telstra presented the forecast in its first-route announcement.

What is confirmed about the “longest route” claim?

The confirmed fact is that Sydney–Perth Direct appears on Telstra InfraCo’s ready-for-service list as of September 2026. The official material cited here does not establish the route’s precise length, its public launch date or that it is Aura’s longest route. Telstra’s overall network-length figures and results from the separate Melbourne–Sydney transmission trial cannot be used to fill in those route-specific details.
