Director Michael Sarnoski and cinematographer Pat Scola have been reported scouting locations in Iceland for the live-action Death Stranding film. Footage described in the October 7, 2026 report shows waterfalls and broad stretches of green moss—but scouting imagery is not confirmation that those sites will appear in the finished movie.

MeriStation reported on October 7, 2026, that Sarnoski was in Iceland on a location scout for the A24 and Square Peg production, citing a social post dated October 6. Cinematographer Pat Scola was also reported to be scouting. The footage included waterfalls and extensive green moss, offering a glimpse of landscapes being considered rather than a list of confirmed filming sites. MeriStation’s report does not identify the exact locations or say that any particular site has been selected.

Where and when is the Death Stranding movie expected to film?
The same report says filming is expected to begin in 2027 and that production is planned across Iceland and Northern Ireland. That is a reported expectation, not a confirmed start date or final location schedule. No exact filming dates or selected sites were stated.
What story will the film tell?
The film is described as an original story set in the Death Stranding universe, centered on new characters rather than a direct retelling of Sam Porter Bridges’ journey in the game. In a June 16, 2026 interview with /Film, Sarnoski said Hideo Kojima had given him room to explore the world with his own characters and tell a new story adjacent to the games. The Iceland landscapes may bring to mind the games’ stark environments, but that is a visual interpretation—not confirmation of how the film will use the locations or how closely its imagery will resemble the games.

No. MeriStation said the cast had not been officially announced as of its October 7, 2026 report. Norman Reedus has reportedly expressed interest in returning, but interest is not a casting announcement; no role or appearance should be treated as confirmed on that basis.
