Why Walking Can Help You Generate Ideas

Walking may help generate more ideas, according to a 2026 review, but evidence is much less certain for evaluating ideas or finding one best solution.

Walking may help you come up with more ideas, but it is not a reliable shortcut to every kind of creative work. A 2026 systematic review found moderate-certainty evidence that walking boosts divergent thinking—the process of generating multiple ideas—while evidence for convergent thinking, or working toward one best answer, was very uncertain. The findings support trying a walk during idea generation, not assuming movement explains creativity or guarantees a breakthrough.

Does walking help you come up with more ideas?

The strongest direct evidence says it can help with divergent thinking. Thabane and colleagues’ 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis covered 23 studies from 16 articles, with 1,036 participants. The pooled effect for divergent thinking was large (d = 0.93; 95% CI 0.44–1.42) and rated moderate certainty. When the analysis was limited to randomized trials, the effect was also large (d = 0.82; 95% CI 0.35–1.28).

That result is about performance on idea-generation tasks, not a guarantee that every person will feel more inspired on every walk. Most participants in the review were post-secondary students, so the findings are less established for other ages and occupations.

What kind of thinking does walking appear to affect?

Creative work includes different tasks, and the evidence is not equally strong across them. Divergent thinking asks for multiple possible responses; convergent thinking asks you to narrow down or find a single solution.

Outcome What it involves Walking evidence
Divergent thinking Generating several ideas or uses, often judged for qualities such as originality Large pooled effect in the 2026 walking review: d = 0.93 (95% CI 0.44–1.42); moderate-certainty evidence, according to Thabane et al., PLOS ONE (2026).
Convergent thinking Finding or selecting a best answer, or solving toward one solution Effect estimate d = 0.16 (95% CI −0.31–0.63); very uncertain evidence, according to Thabane et al., PLOS ONE (2026).

The most common measure in the walking review was the Alternative Uses Task, which asks people to think of different uses for an ordinary object. It appeared in 16 of the 23 studies. This helps explain why the clearest finding concerns generating possibilities rather than judging or refining them.

Why do ideas sometimes come when you walk?

The research can describe a measured change in idea-generation tasks; it does not establish a definitive explanation for why someone has a useful thought while walking. A 2021 systematic review of exercise and creative thinking identified weaknesses in proposed links between exercise and creativity. So explanations involving a particular brain network, chemical, or increase in blood flow should not be treated as settled causes on the basis of these findings.

A 2014 study by Oppezzo and Schwartz found improved divergent thinking in its walking experiments, with a residual boost in performance when participants sat down after walking. The authors also found that effects varied by creativity measure. That supports the possibility that an idea-generation benefit can persist briefly after a walk in an experiment; it does not show that all creative abilities improve or that the effect will last in everyday work.

Is walking better than sitting, indoors or outdoors?

Several studies directly compared walking and sitting, and the 2014 experiments reported improved divergent thinking with walking. But the evidence does not establish that every walking context is superior for every creative task.

Most studies in the 2026 review tested indoor walking (17 of 23). That describes what researchers studied, not proof that indoor walking works better than outdoor walking. A 2024 narrative review reported positive effects on central divergent-thinking measures, including originality, in all six natural-walking experiments it covered. Because it was a narrative review rather than a pooled meta-analysis, that count should be read as context, not as a precise comparative estimate of outdoor versus indoor walking.

Does one walk have the same effect as regular activity?

A broader 2022 systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis examined physical activity interventions, not walking alone. Across 28 intervention studies and 115 effect sizes, it found a medium pooled effect on creative ideation (Hedges’ g = 0.47; 95% CI 0.30–0.65). Effects were stronger for interventions lasting days or weeks than for a single activity bout. This supports a wider connection between physical activity and idea generation, but it cannot be used as a walking-specific estimate or as a prescription for how often to walk.

How to use a walk in a creative workflow

A practical approach is to match the activity to the task: use a walk as an optional prompt while generating possibilities, then return to a seated setting to compare, select, and refine them. This is an application of the distinction between divergent and convergent thinking, not a protocol proven to work for everyone.

  • Try walking when you are stuck generating alternatives, names, concepts, or possible approaches.
  • Capture ideas in whatever safe and convenient way works for you; the studies do not establish a required device, route, pace, or duration.
  • Afterward, review the ideas separately and use your normal criteria to test and choose among them.
  • If walking is uncomfortable or impractical, do not treat it as a requirement for creative work. The evidence describes an average effect in studied groups, not a guarantee for an individual.

Neither the walking review nor the broader physical-activity review establishes an optimal speed, length, or outdoor setting for creativity. There is also no evidence here that particular shoes or other equipment create a creativity benefit.
