A simple Polymarket scanner has two jobs: discover markets with Gamma, then query CLOB for price or order-book data for a specific outcome token. Keep those steps separate, preserve the token ID from the Gamma market record, and make the scanner read-only. Polymarket’s decentralized platform is the scope here; its US platform is separately managed and uses distinct APIs and data.
How the scanner’s data flow works
Gamma and CLOB answer different questions. Gamma is the discovery and metadata layer: it lists markets and provides fields such as activity status, categories, end dates, resolution criteria, and outcome-token IDs. CLOB is the pricing and execution interface; a read-only scanner can use it to request prices and order books for a particular outcome token. Polymarket Institute explains this distinction in its researcher guide.
- Discover: Request market records from Gamma, handling pagination with
limitandoffset. - Filter: Select records using metadata such as activity status, topic, end date, or resolution criteria.
- Choose an outcome: Read the market’s
clobTokenIdsand select the Yes or No token. - Query CLOB: Pass that outcome token ID to a price or order-book request.
Do not substitute a market’s conditionId for its outcome token ID. They are different identifiers; CLOB pricing requests require the specific token ID.
Set expectations before choosing a Python client
The former Polymarket Python client, py-clob-client, is not a sound basis for a new implementation. Its repository README says, “This repository has been archived and is no longer maintained.” It also warns that the client is no longer functional and directs developers to Polymarket’s unified py-sdk. See the archived client repository.

The old README’s midpoint, price, and order-book examples are historical guidance, not a dependable current installation or coding recipe. The official SDK is linked from the migration notice, but current read-only method names and signatures are not established here. Check the unified SDK’s current documentation before writing client-specific imports or code. Do not copy an old example and assume it still works.
This boundary matters for a safe tutorial: the scanner should make public, read-only requests and should not need a private key or invoke a trading operation. Because the current SDK interface is not established, the examples below show the request flow and filtering logic rather than presenting unverified SDK code as runnable.

Discover markets with Gamma
Use Gamma to retrieve market records, then inspect the returned metadata. The Institute guide describes pagination using limit and offset, with a maximum limit of 500. A smaller page size can make responses easier to inspect; advance the offset deliberately until the response no longer supplies more records.
limit = 100
offset = 0
while True:
# Request a Gamma market page using limit and offset.
markets = fetch_gamma_markets(limit=limit, offset=offset)
if not markets:
break
for market in markets:
inspect_or_filter(market)
offset += limit
fetch_gamma_markets and inspect_or_filter are explanatory placeholders, not methods from a verified current SDK. Replace them with calls supported by the current Polymarket documentation. The source does not establish a current API rate limit, service guarantee, or guaranteed data-freshness interval, so avoid assuming a safe request frequency or that every response is real-time.

Filter candidates using the fields that answer your question
Gamma metadata helps decide which markets merit a closer look. Use fields that are actually present in the market record, and confirm their current names and formats in the API documentation.
- Status or activity: Narrow the scan to markets relevant to your use case.
- Topic or category: Group candidates by subject.
- End date: Identify markets with a timeframe that matters to you.
- Resolution criteria and source: Check what event resolves the market and where the criteria point.
- Volume or liquidity fields: Treat these as market-record measures, not as a substitute for the live state of the order book.
For a scanner that runs repeatedly, keep filtering separate from retrieval. That makes it easier to change selection rules without changing how pages are fetched or how CLOB requests are made.

Use the outcome token ID to request CLOB data
A Gamma market record’s clobTokenIds connect discovery to CLOB. They identify the Yes and No outcome tokens. Once you have selected a side, use that side’s token ID in the CLOB request; do not pass the market’s conditionId.
The guide provides this example of a read-only price request:

GET https://clob.polymarket.com/price?token_id={token_id}&side=BUY
Here, {token_id} must be replaced with the selected outcome’s token ID. The side=BUY parameter specifies the side used by the example request; a price response should not be described as a universal market price without explaining what was requested.
CLOB can also answer order-book questions. The Institute identifies current bid-ask spread, midpoint, depth, and price history as CLOB data. Its guide gives a /prices-history example using an outcome token ID; consult the CLOB documentation for the current endpoint parameters and response details. The guide also points to CLOB pricing and order-book documentation for fees, tick sizes, spreads, and related market details.
Compare scan candidates without conflating metrics
A useful scanner can sort or display several views, but they measure different things. Gamma metadata helps identify and contextualize a market; CLOB responses describe prices and available orders for a chosen outcome token.
| Question | Useful data | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Is this market in scope? | Gamma status/activity, topic, end date, resolution criteria | Whether its metadata matches your scan rules. |
| What is the requested outcome price? | CLOB price request for the selected token ID and requested side | A price response for that particular token and request, not a platform-wide or timeless value. |
| How far apart are the quotes? | CLOB bid-ask spread | The gap between available bid and ask prices at the time represented by the response. |
| What is the order book like? | CLOB order-book depth | Available orders at different price levels; it is not the same measure as market volume or liquidity metadata. |
| How has the price changed? | CLOB price history | Historical prices for the selected outcome token, subject to the endpoint’s current supported parameters. |
Do not treat sample prices or records in documentation as current universal values. Price, spread, and depth are time-sensitive observations; market volume and liquidity fields are separate measures with their own definitions.
Keep the scanner read-only and maintainable
- Use Gamma for discovery and metadata, and CLOB for outcome-token prices and order-book information.
- Carry the selected
clobTokenIdsvalue unchanged from the market record into the CLOB request. - Make pagination explicit, and keep each page’s processing separate from the offset logic.
- Keep credentials and trading code out of a public-data scanner; a private key is not needed for the read-only flow described here.
- Verify endpoint paths, parameters, imports, and method signatures against current official documentation before adopting a Python SDK.
- Do not assume that decentralized-platform endpoints cover Polymarket’s separately managed US platform.
The Institute’s guide is dated July 24, 2026, and its API examples may change. The official Gamma and CLOB documentation redirected to newer documentation paths during review, so check the live documentation for current endpoint details rather than relying on a copied example indefinitely.
