1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLong GOP compression is a way of encoding video that stores some pictures independently and represents many pictures between them as predictions from other pictures. It can reduce the data needed to encode video, but the longer dependencies can make seeking, editing, and low-latency playback more demanding.
How long GOP compression works
GOP means “group of pictures.” A group is built around independently coded pictures, with predicted pictures in between. The exact pattern depends on the codec and encoder settings; “long” describes an extended interval or predictive run, not one universal number of frames.

I-pictures and IDR refresh points
An I-picture is coded independently, so it can be decoded without reconstructing earlier pictures in the sequence. An IDR picture is a refresh boundary: in AWS’s description, pictures after it do not refer back to pictures before it. These terms are related, but an I-picture is not necessarily an IDR boundary.

A P-picture predicts from earlier pictures and stores information about changes instead of a complete independent image. A B-picture can use earlier and later pictures as references. Because predicted pictures can reuse information from other pictures, they often need fewer bits than independent pictures; AWS describes B-pictures as potentially more compression-efficient, though actual results depend on the encoding setup. See AWS Elemental MediaConvert’s explanation of frame types.

What “long” means—and what it does not
GOP length is commonly described as the number of frames or pictures between independent refresh points. The term can also refer more broadly to the arrangement of picture types and whether references cross group boundaries. AWS’s Elemental Live GOP guidance describes GOP size as the interval between I-frames, while its MediaConvert guide also treats a GOP as an arrangement of compressed frame types.
There is no fixed frame count that makes a GOP “long” in every codec, frame rate, or workflow. AWS MediaConvert gives 1–2 seconds as a typical GOP duration in its documentation (publication year not stated on the page); at 30 frames per second, that corresponds to 30 or 60 frames. This is vendor guidance, not a universal setting. The same frame count lasts a different amount of time at a different frame rate.

Why use long GOP compression?
Encoding many pictures as predictions can reduce the frequency of larger, independently coded pictures. That can lower the bitrate or file size needed for a given encoding target. Canon describes this trade-off in its camera context: IPB/Long GOP and ALL-I/Intra-frame.

Trade-offs for editing, playback, and live video
Seeking and frame-accurate editing
Because a predicted picture may depend on neighboring reference pictures, a decoder or editor may need to reconstruct those references before displaying the requested frame. This can make random seeking and frame-accurate editing less convenient than with independently coded pictures. The practical effect varies by codec, application, and hardware.
Latency and decoding
GOP structure can affect latency, but it is only one contributor. Reference ordering and B-picture use can matter in live workflows, alongside other encoder and delivery settings. The EBU/SMPTE task-force report discusses the relationship between GOP structure and latency: 1st Report of EBU / SMPTE Task Force for Harmonized Standards for the Exchange of Television Program Material as Bit Streams.

Scene changes and fast motion
Prediction can be less effective when content changes rapidly. SWGDE notes that shorter GOP patterns may suit rapid transitions, but it does not prescribe a universal frame count: Technical Overview of Digital Video Files.
How to choose a GOP setting
Choose a setting for the full encoding and delivery workflow rather than treating “long” as a quality preset. Check these factors:

- Bitrate and quality target: Decide how efficiently the encoder must represent the material within the available bitrate.
- Content: Motion, frequent cuts, and scene changes can affect how well predictions work.
- Editing and access: Consider how quickly the workflow must reach arbitrary frames and how much decoding work it can tolerate.
- Latency and references: For live video, account for reference structure and B-picture behavior; GOP length is not the only latency control.
- Segmentation and random access: GOP boundaries and open- or closed-GOP references should meet the destination’s requirements. AWS recommends a closed-GOP cadence of one for segmented HLS or DASH output in its Elemental Live guidance, and permits open GOPs for non-segmented output. Treat that as AWS service guidance and check the current specification for your destination.
- Codec and frame rate: The same number of frames represents different durations at different frame rates, and codec implementations differ.
Long GOP versus all-intra
All-intra encoding stores every picture independently. Long GOP encoding uses independent pictures as anchors and predicts many pictures between them. The main trade-off is therefore compression efficiency versus dependence on other pictures: all-intra can be easier to access frame by frame, while long GOP can represent a sequence with fewer bits. The best choice depends on whether bitrate efficiency or independent access better fits the recording, editing, or delivery workflow.
