Serverless Execution Architecture: How Functions Run Without User-Managed Servers

Serverless functions still run on managed compute. Here is how platforms route invocations, prepare environments, handle cold starts, and treat state between runs.

Serverless functions still run on servers and inside execution environments; “serverless” means the provider manages that infrastructure for you. When an event arrives, the platform routes it to reusable capacity or prepares an environment, runs the function’s initialization and handler, then may keep the environment available briefly or discard it. The exact lifecycle depends on the service and execution model.

What happens when a serverless function is invoked?

The lifecycle below is a useful model, not a promise that every provider follows the same internal steps. Services may hide their routing, capacity decisions, and execution boundaries behind the function abstraction.

  1. A trigger arrives. An HTTP request, scheduled event, queue message, storage change, or other event reaches the managed service. Google Cloud’s Cloud Run functions architecture blueprint, for example, describes triggers involving Cloud Storage, scheduled intervals, and BigQuery changes, with Pub/Sub and Eventarc available for event routing.
  2. The platform selects capacity. The service routes the invocation to an initialized environment if suitable reusable capacity is available. Otherwise, it starts or prepares an execution environment. The provider controls placement and scaling rather than exposing those decisions as customer-managed servers.
  3. Any required setup runs. A new environment may need to retrieve code or an image, start its isolation boundary and language runtime, load dependencies, and execute initialization code. AWS Lambda documents downloading code, starting the environment, and running initialization before the handler.
  4. The handler processes the event. The platform supplies the request or event to the function. The handler may perform application logic and call other managed services; a serverless application can combine custom functions with those services.
  5. The environment is reused or ended. After the invocation, a platform may retain or freeze the environment to reduce setup work on a later invocation, or eventually terminate it. AWS says Lambda environments are retained for some time in anticipation of another invocation, but are also terminated every few hours for updates and maintenance, even when functions are continuously invoked.

For AWS Lambda specifically, AWS says customers do not directly control the operating systems, hypervisors, hardware, placement, or scaling decisions underlying the service. That is the practical meaning of serverless: infrastructure management is abstracted away, not eliminated.

What is a cold start, and what makes a start warm?

A cold start is the setup latency incurred when the platform must prepare a new execution environment before it can run the handler. A warm start uses an already initialized environment and can avoid some of that repeated work. “Warm” describes a useful opportunity for reuse, not a guarantee that the environment will remain alive.

Why setup takes time

The work varies by platform and function. It can include starting the execution boundary and runtime, loading libraries or other dependencies, and running application initialization. For a container-based service, fetching or starting an image and executing its entrypoint may also be part of startup. AWS identifies initialization and dependency loading as contributors to Lambda startup; Cloudflare says its Containers cold-start time depends on image size and code execution time.

What the published latency figures do—and do not—say

AWS Lambda’s current documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, characterizes cold starts as occurring in under 1% of invocations and ranging from under 100 milliseconds to over 1 second. This is AWS’s general Lambda guidance, not a guarantee for an individual function.

Cloudflare’s undated Containers documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, says its container cold starts can often take 1–3 seconds, depending on image size and code execution time. That estimate describes Cloudflare Containers specifically. It is not directly comparable to AWS’s Lambda characterization: the services, workloads, and measurement scopes are not controlled to match.

For an actual function, startup can be affected by its runtime, dependency and image size, initialization work, whether reusable or provisioned capacity is available, and the platform’s execution and snapshot strategy. The cited sources establish the relevance of initialization, libraries, reuse, image size, and service-specific models; they do not quantify a universal effect for each factor.

When predictable startup matters

AWS recommends Provisioned Concurrency for Lambda workloads that need more predictable start times. It is a capacity configuration to evaluate against the workload’s latency needs and service costs, not evidence that every invocation on every serverless platform will start immediately.

What execution boundary does a platform use?

“Function” describes how application code is invoked; it does not identify one universal isolation mechanism. Containers, language-runtime isolates, and microVMs are among the approaches represented in the cited sources. They differ in startup work, runtime flexibility, isolation boundary, resource use, and how state can be reused.

Model Execution and startup approach State and concurrency implications Scope of the evidence
Container Packages an application with runtime dependencies and isolates operating-system resources. Starting the container and initializing libraries can add setup time; reusing a warm container can avoid repeating some work. Idle reuse occupies resources. Concurrency policy is platform-specific: a container may handle one execution at a time or concurrent executions, depending on the service. A 2018 USENIX ATC systems paper describes container-per-function mapping as a common FaaS approach of that period. Its survey is foundational context, not an inventory of all current services.
V8 isolate Cloudflare Workers uses Google’s V8 engine. Cloudflare describes isolates as lightweight contexts running within an existing Workers runtime; a runtime instance can run many isolates, rather than creating a VM for each function in the described model. Each isolate has isolated memory, but Cloudflare says isolates can be evicted and are not necessarily long-lived. Mutable in-memory state is therefore not durable. Cloudflare’s Workers documentation says an isolate can start around a hundred times faster than a Node process on a container or VM. This is Cloudflare’s comparison, not an independent benchmark or universal result.
Firecracker-based microVM AWS describes Lambda MicroVMs created from a MicroVM image: at image-build time, the service runs the Dockerfile, initializes the application, and snapshots memory and disk so subsequent MicroVMs can start from that snapshot with dependencies already loaded. The documented approach is aimed at isolated stateful sessions and jobs. Its snapshot-based startup model differs from an ordinary short-lived function invocation. This describes AWS’s Lambda MicroVM offering, not every Lambda execution or every serverless service.
Container inside a microVM Cloudflare documents Containers as Linux containers running inside Firecracker microVMs, each with its own kernel and network. Requests reach the container through a Worker and Durable Object. Startup depends on the container image and entrypoint work. This model supports containerized workloads rather than being the same execution path as a Workers isolate. Cloudflare says its container cold starts can often take 1–3 seconds, depending on image size and code execution time.

The isolation descriptions above are specific to the named vendors and source. They are not a blanket security guarantee or a complete account of every provider’s internals.

Can serverless functions keep state between invocations?

Sometimes, opportunistically. AWS documents that objects declared outside a Lambda handler can remain initialized when an environment is reused, and that files in /tmp can remain while the environment is frozen. Those are potential ways to avoid repeated initialization or retain a cache—not persistence guarantees. The environment can be terminated, so code must tolerate that memory and temporary data disappearing.

Store durable application state in an explicit persistent service, such as a database or object store. Keep process memory and temporary storage for data that can be rebuilt or safely lost. A function that requires a long-lived session or stateful job may be a better fit for a service designed around that execution model, such as the documented AWS Lambda MicroVM approach, rather than relying on incidental reuse.

Do not assume that each environment handles only one invocation at a time, either. The 2018 USENIX study found different concurrency policies across the platforms it examined. Check the behavior and limits of the specific service and runtime when correctness depends on concurrency, memory isolation, or state separation.

How should you choose an execution model?

There is no universal winner. Match the service to the workload and verify current service limits and costs before committing.

  • Latency target: Decide whether occasional setup delay is acceptable, whether reusable capacity is sufficient, or whether a provisioned or prewarmed option is needed.
  • Runtime and operating-system needs: Confirm that the service supports the language, dependencies, native components, and process behavior the application requires. An isolate-based model and a Linux container do not offer the same execution environment.
  • Isolation requirements: Identify the documented boundary—runtime isolate, container, or microVM—and assess it against the application’s requirements rather than assuming the word “serverless” specifies one security model.
  • Concurrency and state lifetime: Verify how simultaneous invocations are handled and whether any state survives only through reuse or has an explicit lifecycle guarantee.
  • Events and network access: Plan how requests and events reach the function and how it accesses internal services. Google Cloud’s architecture blueprint includes Eventarc or Pub/Sub, VPC networks, firewall rules, Secret Manager, IAM, Cloud Logging, and Cloud Monitoring as parts of the wider deployment architecture.
  • Workload shape and cost: Distinguish bursty, short invocations from interactive sessions or longer-running jobs. Compare the relevant service configuration and current pricing for the workload; the cited sources do not establish a current cross-provider price comparison.
