Before You Get Rid of Your Old Laptop, Do These Three Things

Save and verify the files you need, erase personal data using device-specific instructions, then choose reuse or recycling and check local battery rules.

Before you sell, donate, recycle, or otherwise get rid of an old laptop, follow this order: save the files you want, erase your personal information using the appropriate instructions for its operating system, then choose a reuse or recycling option. Ordinary file deletion may leave data behind, and recycling rules—including battery handling—vary by location.

1. Save the files you want to keep

Decide what you need from the laptop before erasing it: documents, photos, downloads, or other files. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) suggests transferring files to a replacement computer, cloud storage, or an external storage device. Choose an option that suits you; buying a drive is not necessary if you already have a suitable way to back up your files.

  • Make the transfer or backup.
  • Open a few important files from the new location, or otherwise verify that the transfer completed.
  • Only proceed to erasure once you are satisfied that you have what you need.

2. Remove your personal information

Use the erase or reset process intended for your laptop’s operating system, and follow the current instructions for that specific device. The FTC’s consumer guide points to instructions for Windows PCs, Chromebooks, and Macs: How To Remove Your Personal Information Before You Get Rid of Your Computer.

A reset is the appropriate starting point for many people, but do not treat a generic reset as a universal guarantee of secure erasure. The steps and what they do depend on the device and its operating system. For especially sensitive information, or a laptop managed by an employer or school, ask the organization’s IT or security team what process to use.

Why deleting files is not enough

Deleting files with the keyboard or moving them to the trash does not necessarily remove the underlying data from a drive. In business guidance, the FTC warns that standard deletion may leave information behind and recommends secure-erasure tools when disposing of computers and portable media: Disposing of Devices That Contain Sensitive Data. If the laptop holds data that needs stronger handling than the operating system’s standard reset provides, use a suitable secure-erasure method or follow your organization’s procedure.

3. Choose what happens to the laptop

If it still works, consider whether someone could use it again through continued use, an upgrade, resale, or donation. If it is no longer useful, look for a local electronics collection or recycling option. The EPA recommends checking local government resources and manufacturer or retailer take-back programs as possible starting points. What a program accepts, whether it charges a fee, and whether it serves your area can vary, so confirm details before you travel.

Compare reuse and recycling

  • Usefulness: If the laptop can still serve you or another person, reuse may be practical. If it cannot, look for recycling.
  • Data sensitivity: Decide how much assurance you need from the erase process before a device changes hands.
  • Effort and cost: Check the steps, fees, and travel involved in each available option.
  • Local rules: Confirm that the service accepts laptops and any batteries you plan to bring.

Check battery handling

Lithium-ion batteries and devices that contain them should not go in household garbage or recycling bins, according to the EPA. Check local instructions for battery collection or disposal. If a recycler or take-back program is your chosen route, confirm how it handles the laptop’s battery rather than assuming it accepts every device or battery type.

What to check in a recycler

Before choosing a service, verify its service area, accepted devices and batteries, and any fees. The EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as independent electronics-recycling certification standards. Certification can be one useful selection signal, but it does not guarantee that a particular service near you accepts your laptop or offers a suitable drop-off option. The EPA’s guidance on electronics recycling and e-waste is available at Electronics Donation and Recycling.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT) | SATA HDD/SSD only, Not USB-C, Not M.2 NVMe, 3.5in needs included 12V adapter, hard drive reader, hdd enclosure
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
