How to Plot Histograms in the Terminal

Plotext is the direct terminal-first option for histograms. Gnuplot can render text with its dumb terminal, but its histogram styles arrange parallel data columns rather than automatically binning raw observations.

For a histogram rendered directly in a terminal, start with plotext: its documentation describes terminal plots in colored text, histogram support, and a command-line interface. If you already use gnuplot, its dumb terminal can render plots as text; its documented histograms style, however, arranges data columns rather than automatically binning arbitrary raw observations.

Choose a terminal plotting route

Option What it renders Input distinction Good fit
plotext CLI Plots in the terminal as colored text; histogram support is documented. The cited documentation establishes histogram plotting, but the exact input workflow depends on the command and data format you use. You want a terminal-oriented plot and a CLI rather than writing a Python script.
gnuplot with the dumb terminal An ASCII text block, with configurable dimensions, aspect, and fill character. Its histograms plotting style lays out parallel data columns; it is not, by itself, automatic binning of raw observations. Gnuplot is already part of your plotting workflow, and text output is suitable for your terminal.

These are different routes, not a measured ranking. Plotext’s docs are the direct match when you specifically want a terminal histogram; gnuplot is a natural option when you already prepare and plot data with gnuplot.

Plot a histogram with plotext

Plotext documents both histogram support and a CLI that can draw plots without putting Python code in a script. Its CLI reference describes the method-and-parameter command syntax and provides examples: plotext command-line reference. Follow that reference for the exact invocation and histogram arguments rather than assuming a command pattern from another plotting tool.

The project describes its plots as colored text rendered inside the terminal. The guide also notes that pictures and videos require optional extras; those extras are not needed merely to render plots in the terminal. See the plotext user guide for the supported plotting methods and requirements.

Render gnuplot output as text

Gnuplot’s dumb terminal emits a plot as an ASCII text block. The official driver reference documents controls for output size, aspect, fill character, and ANSI-related modes: gnuplot dumb terminal reference. These settings affect the appearance of the text rendering; color or character behavior can vary with terminal support, so do not assume every terminal displays every mode identically.

The key issue for histogram input is separate from text rendering. The dumb terminal controls how gnuplot displays a plot. The histograms style controls how it organizes data. Gnuplot documents clustered, error-bar, row-stacked, and column-stacked layouts, with clustered as the default; these styles arrange values from parallel data columns. Consult the gnuplot histogram reference for the supported layouts.

Check what your data represents

  • Raw observations: Individual measurements that still need to be grouped into bins to obtain frequencies. The documented gnuplot histograms style is not an automatic raw-observation binning step.
  • Precomputed bins and counts: Values already organized as bin labels or positions and corresponding frequencies. This is closer to the kind of prepared, parallel-column data used for gnuplot’s grouped or stacked histogram layouts, though the exact column arrangement depends on the plot you want.

Before choosing syntax, decide whether you need the plotting tool to calculate bin counts or whether you already have the bins and counts. The cited documentation establishes plotext histogram support, but it does not specify here that every CLI form automatically bins an arbitrary raw data file; check the CLI examples and method parameters for the input form you intend to use.
