9 Useful Free and Open-Source S3 Terminal Tools

A practical guide to nine S3 terminal tools, from AWS CLI and s5cmd to bucket-mounting clients—and how to choose safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For direct bucket and object operations, start with the AWS CLI if you work mainly with Amazon S3; consider s5cmd for wildcard-heavy bulk transfers, or rclone, s3cmd, and MinIO Client when you need broader S3-compatible storage workflows. If you want a bucket to appear as a local filesystem, look instead at Mountpoint for Amazon S3, s3fs-fuse, or goofys: mounting changes how you interact with storage and does not make object storage behave exactly like a local disk.

These nine free or open-source tools are useful candidates, not a universal ranking. “Free” describes the software, not necessarily the storage service: Amazon S3 can charge for storage and transfers, and Free Tier eligibility and terms can change. Check AWS S3 pricing for current costs.

Which S3 CLI should I use?

Choose based on your workflow, not a presumed speed ranking. AWS CLI separates convenient high-level S3 commands from lower-level API operations. Other command-line tools emphasize portability, bulk transfers, or a particular command style. Mounting tools are a separate category: they present a bucket through a filesystem interface.

  • AWS-focused tasks or API coverage: AWS CLI.
  • Wildcard-oriented bulk operations: s5cmd.
  • Multiple cloud-storage remotes or a broad transfer toolkit: rclone.
  • Scripting and S3-compatible endpoints: s3cmd or MinIO Client, after checking endpoint compatibility.
  • Filesystem-style access: Mountpoint, s3fs-fuse, or goofys, after reviewing their documented semantics.

Direct object-management command-line tools

1. AWS CLI: the natural starting point for Amazon S3

AWS CLI includes two S3 command groups. The high-level aws s3 commands cover common bucket and object tasks; aws s3api exposes individual S3 API operations. That distinction helps when a convenient file-oriented command is not enough and a workflow needs more direct API control. AWS provides a guide to using Amazon S3 in the AWS CLI and a getting-started workflow covering bucket creation, upload, listing, download, and deletion.

2. s3cmd: a Python tool for S3 scripting

s3cmd is a long-running Python command-line tool for object management and automation. Its project documents uploads and downloads, synchronization, backups, multipart transfers, encryption, access-control lists, and metadata operations. It describes support for Amazon S3 and other S3-protocol storage, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every provider or endpoint. The project identifies its license as GPLv2 and says the software is free for commercial and private use; check the license terms for your intended distribution or deployment.

3. s5cmd: for wildcard and parallel-transfer workflows

s5cmd is designed around operations such as wildcard matching, uploads, downloads, synchronization, batch deletion, and piping data from standard input. Its documentation also describes parallel transfers, credential options, and integrity checks, making it a candidate for bulk-oriented terminal workflows. These features are not a substitute for a benchmark: actual transfer performance depends on the workload, network, storage endpoint, and configuration.

The repository documentation consulted describes a limitation on server-side S3-to-S3 copies larger than 5 GB. Check the documentation for the specific release you plan to use before depending on such a copy; project behavior can change.

4. rclone: one transfer toolkit for many storage remotes

rclone supports an Amazon S3 backend alongside a broad set of configured storage remotes. Its documented operations include copying, syncing, checking, and mounting. Its S3 documentation explains multipart uploads, credential sources, and the trade-off between transfer concurrency and memory use. It can suit users who want one command-line toolkit across different storage services, though support for a generic S3 protocol does not ensure every provider implements every operation identically.

Take care with sync: rclone makes the destination match the source, which can change or remove destination data. The project advises using interactive operation while learning the command. Confirm source and destination before running a destructive or large-scale sync.

5. MinIO Client (mc): a Unix-like command set for object storage

MinIO Client, usually invoked as mc, offers commands such as ls, cp, mirror, diff, find, pipe, and rm for filesystems and S3-compatible object stores. It supports configuring aliases for compatible endpoints. Verify that the operations you need work with your particular provider. The project states that the client is governed by AGPLv3, so assess license compatibility for your use.

6. Cyberduck CLI (duck): a command-line option in the Cyberduck ecosystem

Cyberduck documents CLI commands for listing buckets and their contents, along with upload configuration examples. The duck CLI may fit a workflow that also uses Cyberduck’s broader client ecosystem. Choose it for the documented tasks you need rather than assuming it provides every capability of a dedicated bulk-transfer or API-focused tool.

How do I sync files to an S3 bucket from the terminal?

First identify the tool’s meaning of “sync” and check the direction of data flow. A sync command may update the destination to match a source, rather than simply add new files. With rclone, the project explicitly warns that sync changes the destination to match the source; use interactive operation while learning and inspect the command’s source and destination before proceeding. AWS CLI, s3cmd, s5cmd, and other tools offer their own file and object workflows, so consult the relevant project documentation for exact flags and behavior rather than transferring assumptions between commands.

  • Confirm which configured credentials and account the command will use.
  • Check the source and destination paths, bucket, and endpoint before starting.
  • Understand whether the chosen operation overwrites, deletes, or only adds objects.
  • For bulk transfers, account for concurrency, memory, multipart behavior, and provider-specific limits.
  • Remember that using free software does not make storage or data transfer free.

Can I mount an S3 bucket as a local drive?

Yes, with filesystem-oriented clients, but a mount is not interchangeable with a direct object CLI. Applications may expect local filesystem behavior that an object-storage-backed mount does not provide. Review each project’s current documentation for supported operations and limitations before choosing it for a workload.

7. Mountpoint for Amazon S3: AWS Labs’ file client

Mountpoint for Amazon S3 is an AWS Labs file client that mounts an S3 bucket as a local filesystem. It is intended for file-oriented access patterns. Read its documented filesystem semantics and limitations before treating the mount as a general-purpose local disk.

8. s3fs-fuse: an S3-backed FUSE filesystem

s3fs-fuse uses FUSE to expose Amazon S3 through a filesystem interface. This is a mount-oriented approach rather than a conventional set of object-management commands. Check the project’s current documentation for supported operations and filesystem limitations before relying on it for a particular application or data pattern.

9. goofys: a POSIX-like filesystem in Go

goofys describes itself as a high-performance, POSIX-like Amazon S3 filesystem written in Go. “POSIX-like” does not establish full POSIX compliance. Review its project documentation for compatibility and operational limits, especially if software depends on specific filesystem behaviors.

What should I check before adopting a tool?

  • Provider and endpoint: Confirm that the provider supports the operations you need; S3-compatible does not mean identical.
  • Credentials: Determine which credential sources and account permissions the tool will use, and avoid exposing secrets in scripts or shell history.
  • Deletion and overwrite behavior: Understand sync, mirror, and remove operations before running them against valuable data.
  • Scale and resource use: Check concurrency, memory demands, multipart behavior, and documented transfer limitations for your release.
  • Mount semantics: Verify filesystem behavior and limitations against the application’s expectations.
  • Maintenance and platform support: Consult the current project documentation for release activity and supported operating systems.
  • License: Review the terms that apply to your use, including the documented GPLv2 for s3cmd and AGPLv3 for MinIO Client.
  • Service costs: Check current storage and transfer charges for the provider; tool licensing and cloud billing are separate.
