8K Ultra HD is a video resolution of 7,680 × 4,320 pixels, also called 4320p. That grid contains exactly 33,177,600 pixels—about 33 million. The “8K” label describes the resolution tier, not the physical size of a television.

What does 8K Ultra HD mean?

8K UHD specifies the dimensions of a video image: 7,680 pixels across and 4,320 pixels high. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) identifies this format as 4320p and gives its total as about 33 million pixels. ITU’s 2023 description of 8K UHD provides the format dimensions.

Multiplying the two dimensions gives the exact total: 7,680 × 4,320 = 33,177,600. “8K” is a shorthand name for this resolution tier; it does not mean eight times the pixels of 4K, nor does it indicate a screen’s diagonal measurement.

How does 8K compare with 4K and 1080p?

The comparison depends on total pixels, not just the number in the name. 8K doubles both the width and height of 4K UHD, so the resulting image grid has four times as many pixels. Compared with 1080p HD, it quadruples both dimensions, giving it sixteen times as many pixels.

Format Resolution Pixel count
8K UHD 7,680 × 4,320 33,177,600
4K UHD 3,840 × 2,160 8,294,400
1080p HD 1,920 × 1,080 2,073,600

The dimensions for 4K UHD and 1080p HD are the standard formats used in the ITU’s comparison. Its 2012 announcement rounded the totals to about 32 million pixels for 8K and about 8 million for 4K; the table uses the exact products of the listed dimensions. ITU’s 2012 announcement describes the resolution relationship.

Does an 8K TV mean the same thing as 8K video?

Not exactly. The resolution describes a video format. A television labeled 8K UHD is a display, and an industry definition can specify characteristics beyond the resolution grid.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) published a voluntary 8K UHD display definition in July 2019. Among its criteria are at least 33 million active, individually addressable physical pixels; at least 7,680 pixels horizontally and 4,320 vertically within a 16:9 viewable window; and a minimum contrast-modulation measure. The definition also addresses up-conversion of SD, HD, and 4K video, HDMI input support for 8K signals, listed frame rates, HDR transfer functions and colorimetry, HDCP 2.2 or equivalent content protection, and the ability to receive and render 10-bit 8K images. CTA’s 8K UHD display characteristics sets out these criteria.

CTA announced its industry-led definition and voluntary logo program on September 17, 2019, for use beginning with 2020 model products. It is an industry definition and logo program, not a universal law governing every use of the term “8K.” CTA’s announcement describes the program.

What does the 8K label tell you about picture quality?

It tells you the resolution tier, but not the whole picture-quality story. A higher pixel count alone does not establish how noticeable the difference will be in a particular setup, or whether the viewing experience will be better overall. The CTA’s separate treatment of HDR, colorimetry, frame rates, bit depth, up-conversion, and visible resolution reflects the fact that these are distinct display and signal characteristics.

When checking an 8K television or setup, look at the device specifications for the attributes that matter to your intended use:

  • Visible resolution: whether the display meets the relevant resolution and pixel-addressability criteria.
  • Signal compatibility: whether the inputs support the 8K signals your source device can send.
  • Frame rate and bit depth: which combinations the display can receive and render.
  • HDR and colorimetry: which formats and color characteristics are supported.
  • Up-conversion: how the display handles SD, HD, and 4K material when presenting it on an 8K panel.

The label by itself does not confirm that the source, connection, and display are compatible or that they will deliver a particular overall picture-quality result.
