The 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition is a striking, clicky PC keyboard inspired by the original Xbox—not a keyboard for Xbox consoles. Windows Central reported it at $89.99 on Amazon US on October 7, 2026, versus a stated $119.99 US retail price. That sale price is a dated snapshot, so check the live listing before buying.
Is the 8BitDo Xbox keyboard compatible with Xbox consoles?
No. Despite the Xbox name, licensing and styling, 8BitDo says the keyboard cannot be used with Xbox consoles. Its integrated Xbox button activates Windows Game Bar, making this a PC accessory with Xbox design cues, not a way to type or play on an Xbox console. 8BitDo’s support FAQ answers “No” to console compatibility. The manufacturer describes it as “Designed with Xbox. Inspired by the original Xbox console. Officially licensed. Compatible with Windows and Android.”

What the hands-on review says about typing and tradeoffs
In a review published October 7, 2026, Windows Central’s Jennifer Young reported using the keyboard daily for around four months. The reviewer liked its retro Xbox appearance, typing and gaming feel, and practical extras. She also described the stock switches as loud and clicky, and said the frame takes up desk space. This is a better fit for someone who enjoys audible mechanical typing than for a buyer looking for a silent or low-profile board.
The review also noted that the ABS keycaps can show finger shine or grease, that the tenkeyless layout leaves out a built-in number pad, and that the optional numpad uses a separate wireless dongle from the keyboard. If you regularly enter figures, factor in the separately sold Retro 18 Mechanical Numpad; Windows Central reported its US price as $44.99, but current price and stock are not established here.

Who should buy it?
- Consider it if you want a distinctive original-Xbox-inspired desk setup, use Windows or Android, and like a loud, clicky mechanical keyboard.
- Look elsewhere if you need Xbox console compatibility, a quiet or low-profile typing experience, or a full-size layout with an integrated number pad.
- Compare the total setup cost if you need the numpad: it is a separate purchase, and the sale price reported for the keyboard may no longer be available.
For a different Xbox-themed option, Windows Central names the Razer BlackWidow V4 75% Xbox 25th Anniversary keyboard and reported a US price of $209.99. That is substantially above the 8BitDo’s stated $119.99 US retail price; check current price and availability before comparing.
