If your iPhone has no sound, first work out whether the problem affects alerts, media, calls, or headphones. Check Silent mode, Focus and the volume setting before cleaning or seeking service. Silent mode can explain missing rings and alerts, but Apple says some alarms and media can still play through the built-in speaker while it is on.
Start by identifying what has no sound
Notice whether the silence affects ringtones and alerts, music or video, call audio, or headphones. Also check whether it happens in one app or everywhere. These distinctions help separate a setting or accessory issue from a possible speaker or call-reception problem.

Try these eight fixes in order
1. Turn off Silent mode
If your iPhone has a Ring/Silent switch, move it so that orange is not visible. If your model uses an Action button, check whether it is assigned to Silent mode and turn Silent mode off if it is. The control differs by model.

2. Turn off Do Not Disturb
Open Control Center or check your Focus settings and turn off Do Not Disturb. It can silence calls, text tones and notifications, so missing alerts alone do not indicate a speaker failure. Silent mode and Do Not Disturb are separate settings.
3. Adjust the volume for the sound you’re testing
While music, video or a call is playing, use the side volume buttons to adjust that audio. At other times, those buttons generally change ringer, alert and sound-effect volume, unless the ringer controls are locked in Settings. You can also open Control Center and move its volume slider. 4. Remove the case or screen protector and inspect the openings
Briefly remove the case, film or screen protector in case it is covering an opening. Check the speaker openings and, if call audio is affected, the receiver opening as well. Apple lists obstructing cases and protectors among its initial speaker checks.
5. Clean visible debris gently
If an opening looks dirty, use only a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Apple Support advises: “Make sure the brush is clean and dry.” Avoid liquids, pins, sharp tools, compressed air and disassembly; Apple’s cited cleaning instructions do not recommend those methods.

6. Test the Ringtone and Alerts slider
In Settings, open Sounds or Sounds & Haptics (the label may vary by iOS version or locale) and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth. If you hear no sound during the test, or the speaker control beside the slider is dimmed, Apple says the speaker may need service. Apple’s speaker troubleshooting steps include this check.
7. Test a call and headphones separately
Place a call and turn on speakerphone to see whether sound comes from the built-in speaker. If you can hear the call on speakerphone but not through the receiver, that narrows the symptom to call audio at the receiver rather than proving that all iPhone sound is absent.

If sound fails only with headphones, check that they are firmly connected and inspect the port or connector, cable, remote and earbud meshes for debris or damage. Check the volume, restart the iPhone, make sure iOS is current, and try a second pair. Apple says that if the second pair works, the original headphones may need replacement; if neither pair works, contact Apple Support. Apple’s headphone troubleshooting guide has the accessory checks.
8. Escalate according to the symptom
If the Ringtone and Alerts test remains silent or its speaker control is dimmed, or the built-in speaker still produces no sound after the checks above, contact Apple Support about service. For silence, static or crackling during calls, test again later or from another location before assuming the speaker is at fault: Apple notes that network or reception can affect call audio.

What the result can tell you
- Only rings or alerts are missing: Check Silent mode and Do Not Disturb first.
- Media and the Ringtone and Alerts test are silent through the built-in speaker: Complete the speaker checks and consider Apple service if the problem persists.
- Calls sound wrong but other audio works: Compare receiver audio with speakerphone, and retry from another time or location if the call is silent, static or crackling.
- Only one headphone pair fails: The accessory may be the cause; compare with another pair.
