These eight protagonists are not villains in their own stories. They make compelling villain concepts because the traits that help them survive—extreme power, lethal methods, stealth, emotional vulnerability, or the ability to reshape events—can look frightening from the other side. The cases range from conditional player choices to a deliberately comic thought experiment, so “better villain” here means an intriguing antagonist premise, not a verdict on each character.
What makes a hero read as a villain?
A useful way to compare these characters is to ask where their threat comes from, how they use it, how much of their conduct the player controls, and what could happen if their goals or targets changed. Some are dangerous because they can overpower almost anyone; others because they can get close without being noticed or make choices with far-reaching consequences. The examples below are different kinds of what-if, not a ranking.

1. Isaac Clarke could become a tragic horror antagonist
Isaac’s engineer’s suit and heavy tools are built for survival, but they also make him look like an armed force moving through a nightmare. In EA’s description of Dead Space, he is an engineer sent to repair the USG Ishimura; he finds its crew slaughtered, Nicole missing, and hostile Necromorphs aboard, while his sanity deteriorates. That official framing makes him a survivor, not a villain.

In a different story, a person under that pressure could become an unsettling threat precisely because the audience understands the grief behind the violence.

2. Kratos has the history of a vengeance-driven antagonist
Kratos’s earlier campaign against the Greek gods is a ready-made villain premise when viewed from the perspective of those caught in his path. The mortal bloodshed accompanying that vengeance complicates any simple picture of him as a righteous avenger.
That is not the whole character. PlayStation describes the 2018 God of War as a story in which vengeance against Olympus is behind him and he must control the rage that defined him while mentoring and protecting Atreus. The tension between that past and his later father-and-mentor role is what makes the reframe interesting.
3. Max Caulfield could turn a gift into a catastrophe
Max’s time-rewinding ability in Life is Strange invites a villain scenario built around control rather than brute force. If someone could repeatedly revisit a moment, they could try to manipulate people and outcomes while believing each intervention was justified.

This is speculative: the premise is about how time manipulation might be misused, not a claim that Max is canonically evil. The story’s choice concerning Chloe also makes the consequences of a decision part of the character’s villain potential; a different choice or target could change how the same power is read.
4. Corvo Attano’s morality depends on the route
Corvo’s powers in Dishonored—including teleportation, possession, and time manipulation—make him dangerous in ways that are hard to anticipate. He can bypass defenses, occupy another person’s body, or alter the timing of a confrontation.
His villain case is especially conditional because it depends on the player’s approach. A high-chaos route that leans on killing presents a very different Corvo from one who avoids lethal force. The character’s capabilities enable the threat, but player choices determine how readily he crosses that line.

5. Kirby is a comic horror villain in disguise
Kirby’s cute appearance makes the contrast do most of the work: this cheerful-looking character can swallow enemies, copy their abilities, and wield extraordinary power. Recast those familiar actions from the point of view of someone facing him, and the result is comic horror.
This is a playful inversion, not a serious moral judgment. The joke depends on how unsettling an ordinary game mechanic can seem when the target, rather than the player, is the one watching.
6. Doom Slayer becomes terrifying if you are his target
The Doom Slayer’s antagonist potential comes from relentless force. He is heavily armed and destroys demons without hesitation; to the demons, that makes him the figure they would fear in a horror story.

The perspective flip is the point: imagine that same unstoppable pursuer coming after you. It is a villain premise based on reputation and power, not a claim that the games present him as a conventional villain.

Agent 47 is better understood as an antihero than as a straightforward hero. His work involves paid killing, disguises, infiltration, and professional competence—the combination lets him approach targets while concealing who he is and what he intends.
Those skills could support a tense story in which he is the antagonist stalking someone else. The unsettling element is not simply that he is dangerous, but that planning and disguise make the danger difficult to see coming.

8. Link’s familiar strengths could feel ominous from the other side
Link’s persistence, wide range of weapons and abilities, and near-silent presentation are heroic in The Legend of Zelda. Reframed from the viewpoint of someone he is pursuing, the same qualities could make him seem like an unstoppable threat: he keeps coming, adapts to obstacles, and offers little warning of what he will do next.
Like the Doom Slayer example, this is a change of perspective rather than a claim about Link’s canonical morality. The villain concept comes from imagining his familiar determination aimed at the reader.
Quick Recap
How the eight villain premises differ
| Character | Source of threat | What makes the villain reframe work |
|---|---|---|
| Isaac Clarke | Survival violence and psychological strain | A tragic horror antagonist whose distress and capability coexist |
| Kratos | Vengeance and past violence | A dangerous history set against a later effort to control rage |
| Max Caulfield | Time manipulation | Power over events could become manipulation, with consequences shaped by choices |
| Corvo Attano | Supernatural abilities and player-directed methods | The high-chaos, lethal approach makes the threat conditional on play style |
| Kirby | Swallowing, copying, and extreme power | A cute exterior clashes with a comic-horror reading of familiar abilities |
| Doom Slayer | Relentless armed destruction | The feared pursuer becomes frightening when the viewpoint changes |
| Agent 47 | Paid killing, disguise, and infiltration | Professional stealth suits a stalking-antagonist story |
