8 PC Gaming Upgrades Under $100 That Can Solve Real Problems

The best sub-$100 PC gaming upgrade depends on what is holding your setup back. Match the fix to the problem and check compatibility before buying.

The best PC gaming upgrade under $100 is the one that fixes a limitation you actually notice. More memory can help when your system runs short during games and multitasking; an SSD can make room for a larger library; a better-fitting mouse or keyboard can improve comfort. None of these changes replaces a major CPU or GPU upgrade, and peripherals cannot guarantee better performance. Start with the bottleneck, then check compatibility and current prices.

How to choose an upgrade that is worth the money

Identify the annoyance first: memory pressure, too little game storage, weak Wi-Fi reception, distracting fan noise, or an uncomfortable input device. Then choose the smallest change that addresses it. A headline specification does not prove an upgrade will help your particular PC, and the prices below are examples rather than guaranteed offers.

  • For internal components, verify motherboard support, available slots, physical clearance, and operating-system compatibility before ordering.
  • For peripherals, prioritize fit, connection, and the features you will actually use over maximum specification claims.
  • Recheck stock and pricing at purchase time. The named prices in this article are dated snapshots, not ongoing offers.

1. Add compatible memory if your PC runs short

More RAM is useful when your games and other open applications push the system beyond its available memory. It is not an automatic way to improve performance on a machine that already has enough for its workload. Before buying, check the memory generation, DIMM form factor, motherboard capacity and slot support, and supported speeds. Confirm whether you need a matched kit or can add modules compatible with what is already installed.

2. Add or replace an SSD for space or a supported boot-drive upgrade

An SSD can be a practical gaming upgrade even when your graphics card is not changing: a larger secondary drive makes room for more installed games. If replacing an older boot drive, speed and the operating system migration plan matter as well. Check whether your motherboard supports the drive’s interface and form factor—M.2 NVMe and SATA are not interchangeable, and PCIe generation sets an interface ceiling. For a game-library drive, capacity and price per gigabyte may matter more than top sequential-speed figures.

PC Gamer once reported a deal on a Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe SSD at $86.95, with advertised sequential speeds of 7,400MB/s read and 6,500MB/s write. That is an old deal example, not a current price or a claim that every PC can use the drive at those speeds. Verify compatibility and today’s listing before buying: PC Gamer’s deal coverage.

3. Choose a mouse that fits your hand and play style

A mouse upgrade can address an uncomfortable shape, unwanted weight, connection preference, or a shortage of useful buttons. Compare how the mouse fits your hand and grip, its weight and connection type, and whether its sensor and button count suit your use. Higher DPI figures alone do not establish that a mouse will feel better.

4. Pick a keyboard for its layout and feel

Under $100, keyboards vary in size, switch feel, noise, and wired or wireless connection. A full-size board keeps the number pad; a compact layout saves desk space but removes keys or moves them behind shortcuts. Consider how the switches sound and feel in your room, and whether the layout suits your work as well as your games.

Hall Effect switches and rapid-trigger features may be relevant to players who specifically want adjustable actuation behavior, but they are not essential for every game or player. Tom’s Hardware’s June 12, 2026 budget-keyboard guide includes picks around $50. PC Gamer’s June 26, 2026 roundup discusses a Hall Effect keyboard while noting its author had not personally tested that keyboard. Treat that product discussion accordingly rather than as a hands-on test: Tom’s Hardware’s budget keyboard guide and PC Gamer’s roundup.

5. Improve game audio or chat with a headset or IEMs

Choose an over-ear headset if you want an integrated boom microphone or prefer that fit. In-ear monitors can be a lower-cost alternative if you tolerate in-ear fit and do not need an integrated boom mic. Check connection type, comfort, and whether you want an open or closed listening experience. Audio gear may make communication or listening more convenient, but it does not guarantee a competitive advantage.

7. Add Wi-Fi to a desktop that needs it

A PCIe Wi-Fi card may help a desktop that lacks a suitable wireless adapter, but the card is only one part of the connection. Check for an available PCIe slot, operating-system support, router compatibility with the wireless standard, and a place to position the antennas. A new adapter will not fix every weak-signal or internet-service problem. Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 article described Wi-Fi 6 and 6E cards below $100 at the time; those examples do not establish current prices or availability: Tom’s Hardware’s upgrade guide.

8. Improve CPU cooling when temperature or noise is the problem

An aftermarket cooler can be worth considering if CPU temperatures or cooler noise are a real issue. Match the cooler to the CPU socket and case: check cooler height, fan clearance, and, for a liquid cooler, radiator support and mounting space. Also account for installation requirements. Tom’s Hardware discussed air coolers and 240mm AIOs below $100 in its 2022 guide, but those are historical examples, not current buying recommendations: Tom’s Hardware’s upgrade guide.

Make the final decision by matching the fix to the symptom

Prefer controller input or play from a couch Controller Game and platform support, connection, layout, sticks, and triggers
