To free up PC desk space, move cables and bulky accessories off the work surface before buying organizers: remove unused leads, route the remaining cables behind the monitor and beneath the desk, and choose upgrades that fit your equipment. These eight practical options target different sources of clutter; they are not a measured ranking, and the space each frees depends on your setup.
Start by mapping the clutter
First, unplug and identify unused or duplicate cables. HP recommends this audit before adding cable-management products. Then plan a route from the devices to the outlet: behind the monitor, horizontally beneath the desktop, and down one desk leg. That path keeps most wiring out of sight while preserving access to connections (HP’s cable-management guidance).

Before choosing anything that mounts beneath the desk, measure the available underside space, note the route to the outlet, and check for obstructions such as supports or a sit-stand frame. Leave enough slack for equipment that moves, including an adjustable desk or monitor arm. Dell’s desk cable-organizing advice also emphasizes outlet clearance and accessible cables.
Eight upgrades that can reclaim desk space
1. Monitor arm
A compatible monitor arm replaces the footprint of a monitor stand and can open up the surface beneath the screen. It can also guide display and hub cables behind the monitor instead of letting them drape across the desk. Check that the arm supports your monitor and that the desk can accommodate its clamp or mounting method. If you reposition the screen, allow cable slack so the leads do not pull tight. HP discusses monitor arms as part of its cable-routing suggestions.

2. Under-desk cable tray or basket
A tray or basket can hold a power strip, adapters, and excess cable away from the desktop and floor. Choose one only after measuring the mounting area and checking how its attachment method works with the desk. Confirm that plugs fit, cables can reach the outlet, and the tray will not interfere with a moving frame or other hardware. HP suggests trays for cable bundles, including dual-monitor setups; Dell describes trays and baskets as useful for power strips and bulky adapters (HP; Dell).
3. Adhesive cable clips
Clips keep frequently used leads—such as a charging cable—at the desk edge or along a planned route, rather than sliding behind furniture or crossing the work surface. They are most useful for a few individual cables, not a bulky bundle. Check the clip size and surface compatibility, and place it where the cable can still move without being pinched. Dell recommends clips for frequently used cables (Dell).

4. Reusable cable ties
Reusable ties gather loose runs into manageable bundles, making it easier to guide several cables together along a desk leg or underside. They reduce tangles rather than eliminating the cables themselves. Group only leads that follow the same route, avoid cinching them tightly, and keep connectors or cables that need regular access easy to separate. Dell includes wraps among its cable-grouping options (Dell).
5. Cable sleeves
A sleeve encloses several wires in one visible run, giving a bundle a neater appearance and making it easier to route behind a monitor or down a desk leg. Measure the bundle before choosing a sleeve, especially for a dual-monitor setup, and leave room for cables that move independently. Sleeves conceal and group wiring; they do not shorten it or remove the need for slack. HP specifically suggests sleeves for dual-monitor cable bundles, and Dell also describes sleeves or wraps for grouping wires (HP; Dell).

6. Cable box
A cable box hides a power strip or excess cord length that would otherwise sit visibly on or beside the desk. Check its dimensions against the equipment you intend to place inside, and make sure plugs and cables can be arranged without strain. Keep the box accessible if you often switch connections or need to reach the power strip. Dell describes cable boxes as a way to contain excess cord length (Dell).
7. USB-C docking station
For a compatible laptop setup, a USB-C dock can consolidate connections for displays, peripherals, Ethernet, and charging into one link between the laptop and desk. That can reduce the number of cables running directly to the laptop and make it easier to connect or disconnect it. Confirm that the laptop’s USB-C port supports the display and charging functions you need, and check the dock’s display outputs and power capabilities before buying. A dock consolidates connections, but the dock and its attached cables still need a home; an under-desk mount or tray may keep them off the surface. HP outlines this one-connection use case in its desk cable guide.

8. Under-desk mount for a compact device
A mount can move a compatible mini PC, thin client, docking station, or USB hub beneath the work surface. Verify the device’s dimensions, weight, ventilation needs, and the mount’s attachment method against the current product specifications. For one specific example—not a general limit—Herman Miller states that its Loop Micro Mount supports devices up to 3.3 pounds. The manufacturer describes it for compact devices such as thin clients, docking stations, and USB hubs (Loop Micro Mount product page). Keep ports reachable and leave slack for any connected equipment that moves.

| What is taking up space? | Start with | Check before installing |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor stand footprint | Monitor arm | Monitor compatibility, desk mounting surface, cable slack |
| Power strip, adapters, or excess leads | Under-desk tray or basket | Underside dimensions, mounting clearance, outlet reach |
| A few loose, frequently used cables | Adhesive clips | Cable diameter, surface, and a route that does not pinch leads |
| Several cables following the same path | Reusable ties or a sleeve | Bundle size, access needs, and movement slack |
| Visible power strip or loose cord length | Cable box | Internal fit, ventilation needs, and access to switches or plugs |
| Many laptop connections | USB-C dock | Laptop port support, display needs, peripherals, and charging |
| A compact computer or hub on the desk | Under-desk device mount | Device weight and size, mount fit, ventilation, and port access |
These options address different sources of clutter, so combine them selectively. For example, a dock can reduce laptop connections while a tray holds the dock and power strip; clips or a sleeve can then guide the remaining cables along the planned route. Avoid bundling cables so tightly that an adjustable monitor or desk pulls on them.
