Thorium Reader is the best EPUB reader for most Windows users. It offers a focused, accessible reading experience for DRM-free EPUBs and supported LCP-protected books. Choose Calibre for a large collection, SumatraPDF for fast and portable reading, or Adobe Digital Editions for library loans and Adobe DRM. The right choice depends first on how your book is protected and where it came from.

Which EPUB reader should you choose?
For most readers: Thorium Reader
Thorium is the strongest default when you want a dedicated book reader rather than a file-management tool. EDRLab documents support for EPUB 2 and EPUB 3, reflowable and fixed-layout publications, and Media Overlays. It also documents compatibility with JAWS, NVDA and Narrator, plus read-aloud with visual highlighting. The software is free, open-source and available for Windows 10 and newer.

- Download the Windows installer from EDRLab.
- Install and launch Thorium.
- Open or import the
.epubfile. - Adjust typography, layout and theme, then use the available bookmark and annotation controls.
Thorium is focused on reading, so Calibre is better when metadata, conversion and device synchronization are your main concerns. Its LCP support is documented at Thorium’s technical documentation; LCP is different from Adobe DRM.
For hundreds of books: Calibre
Calibre is a library manager with a built-in viewer. It lets you edit metadata, organize covers, search and sort a collection, convert formats and communicate with supported devices. That power makes it less streamlined than a dedicated reading app for a single novel.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
- Install the current Windows build from Calibre’s official page.
- Choose or create a library folder.
- Select Add books and choose the EPUB.
- Edit metadata when needed, then double-click the title to open the viewer.
- Convert only when another format is genuinely required; conversion can change fonts, layout, tables, images or interactive features.
The current page lists Calibre 9.13.0 and requires Windows 10 version 1809 or later. Windows 10 installations below that threshold need the legacy Calibre 7.26 release.
For speed and portability: SumatraPDF
SumatraPDF is a practical choice for occasional, DRM-free EPUB reading. Its documentation lists unencrypted EPUB, PDF, MOBI, comic-book formats and more. The portable build can run from removable storage without a conventional installation. The official site displayed stable version 3.6.1 when checked, with Windows 10/11 and ARM64 downloads.
- Download the installer or portable package from SumatraPDF.
- Open the application and choose File → Open, or double-click an EPUB.
- Use navigation, search and bookmarks for quick reading.
- To change the default app, open Settings → Apps → Default apps, search for
.epuband select SumatraPDF. Windows labels can vary by update.
Because the format documentation specifies unencrypted EPUB, SumatraPDF is not the choice for Adobe DRM or other protected files.

For library loans and Adobe DRM: Adobe Digital Editions
Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) remains important for public-library and retailer workflows that use Adobe DRM. Adobe advertises EPUB, EPUB3 and PDF support, bookshelves, full-text search, bookmarks, highlights, notes, printing controls and compatibility with several Windows screen readers. Its EPUB 3 feature list includes audio/video, right-to-left reading, dynamic image resizing, interactive quizzes and math rendering, although behavior depends on the book.
- Install ADE from Adobe.
- Authorize the application if your library or retailer requires it.
- Download the provider’s
.acsmfile. - Open the ACSM file in ADE; it is a license/download instruction, not the EPUB itself.
- Let ADE retrieve the licensed EPUB or PDF, then read it in ADE during the loan period.
For a modern feature set: Readest
Readest presents itself as free and open-source and advertises EPUB/PDF reading, highlights, notes, split-screen reading, customizable fonts and themes, text-to-speech, translation, Wikipedia lookup and cross-device sync. Windows is one of its listed platforms. Treat sync, DeepL integration, AI text-to-speech, account requirements and data handling as vendor-stated details to verify for your setup rather than guaranteed behavior.
Microsoft Store options: Aquile Reader and Freda
Aquile Reader’s listing confirms a Windows app named “Aquile Reader – EPUB PDF CBZ CBR COMIC.” Before installing, check the current Store page for Windows 10 compatibility, local-file support, DRM handling, account requirements, annotation export, maintenance and paid features. Freda is also a Windows-oriented candidate, but current official download location, compatibility, pricing, advertising model and DRM support should be confirmed before treating it as a primary recommendation.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
For Kobo purchases: Kobo Web Reader
Kobo’s current desktop page directs ordinary computer reading to Web Reader. It opens Kobo previews, purchased Kobo books and Kobo Plus content in modern browsers such as Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and synchronizes progress and annotations within the Kobo ecosystem. Kobo’s legacy Desktop application remains for specific older-device setup, updates and USB transfers. It is not a general-purpose reader for arbitrary local EPUB files.

- DRM-free, reflowable EPUB: Usually works in Thorium, Calibre, SumatraPDF, Readest, Aquile and Freda.
- Adobe DRM EPUB: Normally requires ADE or another reader supporting that authorization workflow.
- LCP DRM EPUB: Thorium documents support; this is not Adobe DRM.
- Fixed-layout EPUB: Rendering, page spreads, zoom and text selection vary substantially.
- EPUB 3 with audio, video, scripts, math or interactive content: Feature support differs by reader and by publication.
- Malformed EPUB: Invalid package files, missing resources or incomplete downloads may need validation or a fresh download.
Readers cannot legally turn a protected book into a portable DRM-free file. Avoid tools that promise DRM removal or “unlocking.”

Accessibility, notes and synchronization
Accessibility
Thorium has the clearest documented accessibility position in this group: its materials name JAWS, NVDA and Narrator and describe read-aloud with visual highlighting. Adobe also advertises Windows screen-reader compatibility. Readest advertises text-to-speech and typography controls. None of these claims guarantees that every EPUB is accessible; the book’s headings, alt text, language metadata and reading order matter too. Text-to-speech is not the same as complete screen-reader support, and a dark theme is not proof of adequate contrast.
Annotations
Thorium, ADE and Readest all advertise annotation-related features, while Calibre is primarily a collection-management tool and SumatraPDF is oriented toward quick reading. Do not assume that highlights or notes synchronize between applications. Their storage and export behavior can differ, so check the app’s current documentation before relying on annotations for study or research.
Windows 10, Windows 11 and ARM considerations
- Thorium lists Windows 10 and newer.
- Calibre’s current release requires Windows 10 version 1809 or newer; older Windows 10 systems need Calibre 7.26.
- SumatraPDF lists Windows 10 and 11, with 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM64 builds.
- Thorium provides a Windows ARM download path. Confirm whether your selected build is native ARM64, emulated x64 or Store-delivered before installation.
Browser reading is different from opening a local file. Edge can access Kobo Web Reader, but that does not make Edge a native local EPUB library application. Claims about built-in Edge EPUB support should be checked against the exact Windows and Edge builds in use.

Troubleshooting common EPUB problems
The book will not open or formatting is broken
- Try the file in Thorium and, when appropriate, ADE.
- Confirm whether it is DRM-free, Adobe DRM or LCP-protected.
- Re-download it from the original source.
- Validate the EPUB with a reputable EPUB validation tool.
- Check whether it is fixed-layout or uses unsupported scripts, multimedia or embedded fonts.
Do not convert immediately: conversion can remove or alter layout, fonts, tables, images and interactive content.
An authorization error appears
The likely causes are Adobe or LCP protection, an ACSM file opened in the wrong app, an expired loan, a different account, or a copied file without its license. Follow the library or retailer’s official workflow, use ADE for Adobe DRM and Thorium for a supported LCP workflow. Do not use DRM-removal software.
It is a comic, textbook or image-heavy book
Evaluate zoom, page-spread behavior, image navigation, table of contents, footnotes, hyperlinks, text selection and image accessibility separately from a normal reflowable novel. A reader that performs well on one EPUB may handle a fixed-layout textbook very differently.
