There is no single AI detector that is the most accurate for every kind of text. GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks, Turnitin, Sapling, ZeroGPT, QuillBot and Grammarly are eight tools readers may encounter, but the right one depends on your workflow—and every result needs human review. A detector score is a screening signal, not proof of who wrote something.
How to choose an AI detector
Start with what you need to do, not with a tool’s headline accuracy claim. A scan for an individual writer is a different use from a school’s review process or a publisher’s editorial workflow. Check whether the service fits your setting, what it actually reports, and whether its language and text-length limits suit the material you plan to scan.

- Use case: Is the tool intended for an individual, an editorial team, or an educational or organizational setting?
- Workflow: Does it provide document-level results, sentence highlights, writing-history features, or other checks you need?
- Evidence: Is an accuracy figure a vendor claim or an independent result? What texts, models, languages, and edits were included?
- Practical limits: Check current input limits, language coverage, pricing, privacy terms, and whether access is available to you. These details can change.
For decisions with consequences for a student, employee, or writer, do not treat a detector score as a verdict. Review the passages, ask for context, and consider other evidence.

The table separates tool-specific product information from results in a single independent evaluation. The study figures are the aggregate accuracy reported for its combined baseline dataset—not a forecast of how a tool will perform on your material. “Not reported here” means the cited 2026 study did not provide a figure in the available findings for that product.

| Tool | What it may suit | Documented workflow or limitation | 2026 study baseline result |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPTZero | Writers and educators who want document scans and writing-process features | Its official page describes document and advanced scans, writing replay, sentence-level results, plagiarism checking, feedback, browser and Google Docs tools, and Google Classroom and Canvas integrations. The unauthenticated input counter is 10,000 characters. GPTZero says its strongest language setting is English prose and that document-level results are stronger than sentence- or paragraph-level results. | 100% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| Originality.ai | Publishers, editors, and teams looking for AI and plagiarism checks | Its official page describes AI and plagiarism checks, sentence highlights, writing replay, team features, and enterprise and education workflows. It advertises three free scans per day, up to 2,000 words. The page says it uses TLS 1.2-or-higher encryption, makes training-data use optional, and allows scan history to be deleted. | 100% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| Copyleaks | Worth considering when comparing tools evaluated in the 2026 study | The available findings establish a study result, but do not establish current plan limits, language coverage, product features, or access for a particular user. | 100% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| Sapling | Worth considering for a comparison that includes an evaluated detector | The available findings establish a study result, but not current product features, pricing, input limits, or language coverage. | 97.7% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| ZeroGPT | Worth considering as one of the detectors included in the study | The available findings establish a study result, but not current product features, pricing, input limits, or language coverage. | 95.5% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| QuillBot | Worth considering as one of the writing-tool brands evaluated in the study | The available findings establish a study result, but not current detector features, pricing, input limits, or language coverage. | 95.5% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| Turnitin | Readers whose institution provides access may encounter it in an educational setting | The study evaluated it, but that does not establish that any given institution offers AI detection to individual readers. Current product access and terms are not established here. | 93.2% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
| Grammarly | Worth considering as one of the writing-tool brands evaluated in the study | The available findings establish a study result, but not current detector features, pricing, input limits, or language coverage. | 90.9% aggregate accuracy in the study’s combined baseline dataset. |
Winston AI also appears in broad comparisons of this category, but it was not among the eight products with results reported in the 2026 study findings summarized here. Current product details and comparable test results are not established here, so it cannot be assessed on the same basis as the table entries.
What the accuracy numbers do—and do not—tell you
A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Advances in Information Technology on March 10, 2026, tested text from ChatGPT-4, DeepSeek, Gemini, and Grok alongside human-written samples. In its combined baseline dataset, it reported the figures shown above. Those results describe that study’s sample and method; they do not mean a detector will classify every real-world document correctly.
The same paper found that results could fall after paraphrasing, translation, or NNES-style rewriting (rewriting associated with non-native English style). In one paraphrased Grok condition, the paper reported 45.7% accuracy for Turnitin and 19.0% for Grammarly. These figures apply to that particular condition, not to all text those products scan.

A research review by Fraser, Dawkins and Kiritchenko in the National Research Council Canada Publications Archive explains why detector comparisons depend on test data and evaluation metric, and concludes that there is no clear winner. A result from one model, language, text length, or editing method may not carry over to another. Human edits can change a scan, and a detector failing to flag text does not establish that it was written by a person.

When GPTZero or Originality.ai may fit
Choose GPTZero when its described workflow matches yours
As of its official product page and FAQ accessed October 7, 2026, GPTZero describes document scans, writing replay, integrations, and related writing checks. The page advertises 99% accuracy and a 95.7% RAID result; those are GPTZero’s own claims, not independent guarantees. GPTZero’s FAQ states, “No AI detector is 100% accurate, and AI itself is changing constantly.” The company advises against using its detector as a final verdict or to punish someone, and says document-level results are stronger than sentence- or paragraph-level results.
Choose Originality.ai when its team and editorial features matter
Originality.ai’s official product page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes team and enterprise or education workflows, sentence highlights, and writing replay in addition to AI and plagiarism checks. It advertises “most accurate” and adversarial-data claims, which should be understood as vendor statements rather than an independent comparison. Its page lists three free scans a day for up to 2,000 words; current paid plan prices are not established here.
How to review a detector result responsibly
- Use the result as a prompt. Record what the tool flagged, but do not treat its score as an authorship certificate.
- Read the underlying text. Examine the highlighted sentences in context rather than relying on a document-wide label or a single passage score.
- Consider how the text was produced. Editing, paraphrasing, translation, and language background can affect detection results.
- Seek independent context. If the question matters, ask the writer about their process and consider other evidence, such as drafts or version history, where appropriate.
- Check the product’s current terms. Before uploading sensitive or unpublished work, review the service’s current privacy, retention, and data-use settings.
