A 75-inch TV is usually the better choice for a bright shared living room and straightforward everyday use. A projector is better when a much larger, cinema-style picture matters most and you can plan the room, screen and placement around it. The deciding factors are room light, viewing distance, target screen size and how much setup you are willing to do.
75-inch TV or projector: the quick comparison
| Consideration | 75-inch TV tends to suit | Projector tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Room light | Daytime viewing, windows or a shared living room | Evening viewing or a room where light can be controlled |
| Image size | A fixed 75-inch screen is large enough | A substantially larger picture is central to the goal |
| Setup | Simple daily operation and a stable, fixed-size display | Measuring throw, aligning the image and choosing a screen are acceptable |
| Seating | You prefer a known, fixed screen size | You can match image dimensions to seating distance and viewing angle |
| Sound | Built-in audio may be enough for casual viewing | A separate soundbar or surround system may be part of the setup |
These are category-level tendencies, not guarantees for every TV or projector. Model performance, room conditions, screen material and installation can change the result. LG and BenQ both describe TVs as better suited to competing with ordinary ambient light, while light can reduce projected contrast and make a projector image look washed out (LG’s projector-versus-TV comparison; BenQ’s TV-versus-projector guide).

When a 75-inch TV is the better home-theater choice
Your room stays bright
If you watch during the day, have uncovered windows or share the room with other activities, a TV is generally the more predictable display. Projected images rely on light returning from the screen; ambient light reduces perceived contrast. A projector can still work in a living room, but the picture will be more dependent on controlling light and choosing suitable equipment.
You want a fixed screen and low-friction use
A TV gives you a ready-to-use 75-inch image without calculating throw distance or aligning a projection. That makes it a practical fit for casual viewing and households that want a consistent screen size. This is a category comparison rather than an endorsement of any particular 75-inch TV.

When a projector makes more sense
A much larger picture is the priority
Projection’s central advantage is image scale. LG describes images above 100 inches as a normal projector use case and notes that a larger image can make movies and games feel more involving. At those sizes, resolution and screen quality matter more because the image occupies more of your field of view.
You can plan for the room and the rest of the system
Think of projection as a system, not just a projector purchase: the projector, screen, placement, room-light control and audio all affect the result. LG notes that projectors commonly rely on external audio. Screen size, brightness, ambient light and screen gain also interact, so a screen surface that works well in one room may not be right for another.
Choose screen size around your seats
Screen size should suit both the room dimensions and your seat’s distance from the image. ProjectorCentral’s 2026 buying guide reports a 30-degree viewing-angle recommendation from SMPTE and 36 degrees from THX. As an example, its guide maps a seat 15 feet away to 110-inch and 134-inch 16:9 diagonals, respectively. These are planning references, not rules; personal preference and available space matter too (ProjectorCentral’s 2026 projector buying guide).

Check projector throw distance before choosing a model
Do not assume a projector will fit because a generic distance sounds suitable. Throw distance varies by projector and zoom, so use the selected model’s own chart or calculator. The difference between model-specific figures can be substantial:
| Projector reference | Image size | Listed projection distance |
|---|---|---|
| Epson EB992F, 16:9 (Epson America support reference, 2025) | 100 inches; image dimensions 221 × 125 cm | 134–181 cm |
| Epson EB992F, 16:9 (Epson America support reference, 2025) | 150 inches; image dimensions 332 × 187 cm | 202–273 cm |
| Projector covered by the LG USA support table, at 1.0× zoom (LG USA Support, 2025) | 100 inches | 465 cm |
The Epson figures apply only to the EB992F, and LG’s 465 cm figure applies to the projector covered by its support table at 1.0× zoom—not to projectors generally (Epson EB992F support reference; LG USA projector setup guidance). LG’s guidance states, “The distance between the projector and the screen determines the actual size of the image.” It also advises placing the lens at a right angle to the screen; an off-angle setup can distort the image.
Which should you choose for your room?
- Choose the 75-inch TV if the room is often bright, you want a fixed screen size or you value simple everyday operation.
- Choose a projector if a substantially larger image is the goal, you can manage room light and you are prepared to check throw geometry and select a screen.
- Measure before committing to projection: note the intended screen position, seating distance and available projector placement, then verify the exact model’s throw chart.
- Plan for sound: decide whether the projector setup needs a separate soundbar or surround audio rather than assuming built-in audio will suit your room.
Brightness, image quality, gaming latency, HDR performance, lamp or laser life and operating costs depend on the particular products and market. No specific models are compared here, so those factors need model-by-model checking before purchase.
