Sometimes. A used iPhone can have time left on Apple’s limited warranty, counted from its original retail purchase date, and some AppleCare plans can transfer to a new owner. Neither coverage is guaranteed by the fact that the phone is an iPhone or by a seller’s promise: check the device with Apple and verify any AppleCare transfer before paying.
What coverage can a used iPhone have?
There are two separate possibilities: remaining coverage under Apple’s limited warranty, and an AppleCare plan that is still active and eligible to transfer. They have different terms and clocks; resale does not restart the limited-warranty period.

Apple’s limited warranty
Apple’s U.S. iOS Warranty Document provides a one-year warranty period from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser for qualifying defects in materials and workmanship when the product is used normally in accordance with Apple’s published guidelines. The term is not one year from your used-phone purchase. See Apple’s U.S. iOS Warranty Document. Warranty documents and statutory consumer protections may differ outside the United States.

This is limited defect coverage, not general insurance. The U.S. document excludes, among other things, ordinary wear, cosmetic damage, accidental or liquid damage, and damage caused by unauthorized service.

AppleCare
AppleCare is a separate plan with its own coverage period and transfer rules. Apple describes AppleCare+ as providing additional hardware service and technical support, including accidental-damage incidents for covered devices; the applicable plan terms determine the exact benefits, limitations, and service conditions. Review the relevant AppleCare+ terms.
Does AppleCare transfer to a new owner?
Sometimes, depending on the plan, how it is paid for, and the country or region. Apple says some plans and regions do not allow transfers. Its support guidance says monthly or annual plans linked to an Apple Account cannot be transferred. Qualifying single-pay plans may be transferable once under the applicable terms, subject to required documents, notice, and acceptance of the plan terms. Start with Apple’s instructions for transferring an AppleCare plan, then confirm that the specific plan qualifies with Apple Support.

Ask the seller for the plan confirmation and original sales receipt. Do not treat an active-looking status or verbal assurance as proof that the plan has been transferred to you, and clarify whether any payment obligations remain.
How to check a used iPhone before buying
- Get the serial number. Ask the seller for the phone’s serial number and check it using Apple’s coverage checker. If inspecting the phone in person, its coverage details may also be available at Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty.
- Compare the result with the claim. Check the displayed coverage status and expiration date. Do not estimate coverage from the model or the phone’s apparent age.
- Verify any AppleCare plan separately. Request the plan details and original receipt, then contact Apple Support to confirm transfer eligibility, required notice or documents, and any payment obligations.
- Check local terms. If you are outside the United States, consult the warranty and AppleCare terms for your country or region; the U.S. warranty document does not establish every market’s terms.
Apple’s coverage checker is the practical starting point for a device’s coverage status, but a seller’s AppleCare transfer claim still needs confirmation under the plan’s rules.

Can you add AppleCare after buying a used iPhone?
Do not assume you can enroll a resale device. Apple’s general enrollment guidance describes adding AppleCare+ within 60 days of purchasing a new Apple device and directs users to check their available coverage options. That guidance does not establish that every used iPhone or subsequent owner is eligible. Check the exact phone and region through Apple’s AppleCare+ enrollment options and coverage checker before relying on new enrollment.

| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Limited warranty | Whether coverage remains and its displayed expiration, based on the original retail purchase date. |
| AppleCare status | Whether a plan is active and whether Apple confirms that it can transfer to you. |
| Plan type and payment | Whether the plan is single-pay or linked to an Apple Account, plus any continuing payment obligations. |
| Country or region | Which local warranty and AppleCare terms apply, along with any separate consumer protections. |
A seller, retailer, or local consumer law may provide protections separate from Apple’s warranty and AppleCare. Those depend on the transaction and jurisdiction; Apple’s U.S. warranty document does not resolve them.
