7 Ways to Fix AirPods Case Not Charging No Light [2024]

If your AirPods case shows no light, verify the model-compatible power connection and charge it for at least 15 minutes before judging the result. Then check wireless alignment where supported, reported charge status, safe cleaning, and model-specific service options.

If your AirPods case is not charging and shows no light, first connect it to a working power source with the cable that fits your case and leave it charging for at least 15 minutes. A dark light alone does not prove the case is broken: during wireless charging, the status light may turn off after several seconds even while charging continues.

Work through these checks in order. Use wireless steps only with a compatible wireless charging case, check charge status on a paired Apple device when possible, and follow generation-specific reset instructions.

1. Confirm the case and power source

Put the AirPods in the case and close the lid. Connect the case to a working power source using a compatible Lightning or USB-C cable, depending on the case model. Make sure the cable is firmly connected at both ends, then charge for at least 15 minutes, as Apple recommends.

Check the case’s port before using or buying a cable: USB-C fits only a USB-C case. If you have a known-working compatible cable, adapter, or outlet, test with it before concluding the case has failed.

2. Reposition the case on a wireless charger

This step applies only if your case supports wireless charging and you are using a compatible Qi charger. Place the case with its status light facing up. Apple says the light may come on for several seconds and then turn off while charging continues, so it does not need to remain lit.

If the light does not come on, reposition the case on the charger. If it still will not charge, try a compatible wired connection to a USB power adapter and working power source.

3. Check the reported charge status

A dark status light is not a complete diagnosis. Check the AirPods’ charge status on a paired iPhone or iPad, Mac, or the charging case where available. Use that result alongside the power check to see whether the case or AirPods report a charge.

4. Check the cable, adapter, and outlet

A faulty or disconnected power accessory can mimic a case problem. Confirm the cable and adapter are connected securely and the outlet or other power source works. If possible, test with another known-working cable and adapter that are compatible with your case’s port.

5. Clean the case carefully

Debris around the charging port can interfere with a wired connection. Apple recommends removing port debris with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Do not put anything into the charging port, and do not use pins, toothpicks, swabs, metal tools, or abrasive materials there.

Wipe the outside of the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If needed, the cloth may be slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, but keep liquid out of the ports and let the case dry before charging.

6. Reset AirPods only after the basic checks

Apple includes resetting AirPods among its charging troubleshooting options, but the steps vary by generation. Follow Apple’s instructions for your exact AirPods model rather than using a universal button sequence. A reset removes custom settings, which you may need to set up again; it is not a fix for confirmed hardware damage.

7. Seek service if the case remains unresponsive

If the case still does not charge after you have checked power, tried wireless repositioning where supported, checked reported charge status, and cleaned it safely, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Check warranty or AppleCare coverage and identify your case model before arranging service or considering a replacement.

Apple says an inspection may be needed for a personalized estimate, and service options can vary by location and parts availability. Authorized providers set their own fees, so confirm the current cost and options for your model and location rather than relying on a universal price.

FAQ

Why is my AirPods case not charging?

Possible causes include a disconnected or faulty cable, adapter, or power source, a case that is mispositioned on a wireless charger, or debris around the port. Check these before assuming there is an internal fault.

Does no light mean my AirPods case is not charging?

Not necessarily. Apple says the status light may turn off after several seconds during wireless charging even while charging continues. Check charge status on a paired Apple device where possible and test with a compatible wired setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I charge an unresponsive AirPods case before checking it?

Apple recommends charging the AirPods in their closed case for at least 15 minutes using a compatible cable and a working power source.

No. Apple advises using a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for port debris and says not to put anything into the charging ports. Keep liquid and abrasive materials out of the ports.

Should I replace the case if it still shows no light?

Do not assume the case needs replacement based on the light alone. If the checks do not resolve the issue, ask Apple or an authorized provider about diagnostics, coverage, and a model-specific service or replacement estimate.
