Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSeven Excel functions can make common spreadsheet jobs easier: LET and LAMBDA help organize and reuse calculations, TEXTSPLIT breaks text into separate values, and TAKE, DROP, VSTACK, and CHOOSECOLS reshape array results. Each solves a different problem, and availability depends on your Excel version.
Make calculations easier to read and reuse
LET: name the parts of a calculation
LET assigns names to intermediate values inside a formula. That can make a long calculation easier to understand and avoid repeating the same expression in multiple places. For example, to calculate a 10% tax on a $50 subtotal, you could write =LET(subtotal,50,taxRate,10%,subtotal*taxRate). Here, subtotal and taxRate name the values used in the final calculation. The example illustrates the syntax; it is not a performance benchmark.

Use LET when a formula repeats an expression or when meaningful names would make its logic easier to follow. Microsoft documents LET for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021; check the documentation for your edition and update channel before sharing a workbook that uses it: Microsoft’s LET function documentation.

LAMBDA lets you define a calculation once and call it by a name, much like a built-in Excel function. For example, a markup calculation could be written as =LAMBDA(price,price*1.15)(100), which returns 115. To reuse it throughout a workbook, define and name the LAMBDA in Name Manager, then call the name with an input such as =Markup(A2). No VBA, macro, or JavaScript is required.

- Designed for Excel on a Windows Computer
Microsoft’s documentation says a LAMBDA can have up to 253 parameters. A call with the wrong number of arguments can return an error; entering a LAMBDA in a cell without calling it can return #CALC!. Microsoft documents LAMBDA for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021: Microsoft’s LAMBDA function documentation.
Split text from one cell into columns
TEXTSPLIT: separate values at a delimiter
TEXTSPLIT divides text into a spilled array using a column delimiter, a row delimiter, or both. To split a full name in cell A2 at the space, enter =TEXTSPLIT(A2," "). Excel returns the parts in neighboring cells, provided the spill range is clear. For comma-separated tags, use =TEXTSPLIT(A2,",").

The function brings Text-to-Columns-style splitting into a formula, so the result can update when its source text changes. Its options also include handling consecutive delimiters, matching case, and padding uneven results. Microsoft documents TEXTSPLIT for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024: Microsoft’s TEXTSPLIT function documentation.

Keep or remove rows and columns at an array’s edges
TAKE: return a section from the beginning or end
TAKE returns a requested number of contiguous rows or columns from an array’s beginning or end. If A2:C100 contains records already sorted with the newest record last, =TAKE(A2:C100,-5) returns the last five rows. A negative row count selects from the end; a positive count selects from the beginning. You can use the column argument when you want to select an array’s edge columns instead.

DROP: exclude a section from the beginning or end
DROP removes a requested number of contiguous rows or columns from an array’s beginning or end. For example, =DROP(A1:C20,1) removes the first row—useful for excluding a header from a result. As with TAKE, a negative count works from the end; the optional column argument controls columns rather than rows.
Microsoft’s function catalog marks TAKE and DROP with the 2024 version marker and notes that functions with a version marker are unavailable in earlier versions. Check the function entries and your Excel edition before relying on them: Microsoft’s Excel functions by category.

Combine lists and build a focused view
VSTACK: append arrays vertically
VSTACK appends arrays one below another, in the order you provide. If January’s records are in A2:C20 and February’s in E2:G18, =VSTACK(A2:C20,E2:G18) creates a combined spill. Use corresponding columns in the same order in each source. Inspect the result if the source arrays have different widths; mismatched dimensions can produce padding or errors that affect the result.

CHOOSECOLS extracts specified columns from an array while leaving the source data intact. If A1:D20 contains four fields and you want only the first and third, enter =CHOOSECOLS(A1:D20,1,3). This is useful for a compact report view that updates from a wider source.

You can combine the functions when the job calls for it: apply CHOOSECOLS to each monthly range to keep the same fields, then pass those results to VSTACK to append them. For example, =VSTACK(CHOOSECOLS(A2:D20,1,3),CHOOSECOLS(F2:I20,1,3)) returns the first and third fields from both ranges in one spill. Confirm that the selected fields mean the same thing and appear in the same order in each source.
Microsoft’s catalog marks VSTACK and CHOOSECOLS with the 2024 version marker; see the catalog for the functions’ version information: Microsoft’s Excel functions by category.

Will these formulas work in your version of Excel?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s function catalog uses version markers to identify functions unavailable in earlier versions. It marks TAKE, DROP, VSTACK, and CHOOSECOLS with the 2024 marker. Microsoft’s individual pages document LET and LAMBDA for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021, while TEXTSPLIT is documented for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024. Actual availability can depend on the product edition and release channel, so check the documentation for your installation before building a workbook around a function or sending it to others.
Compatibility matters even for familiar functions: Microsoft explicitly says XLOOKUP is unavailable in Excel 2016 and Excel 2019, although someone using those versions may receive a workbook created in a newer edition. Newer functions can be convenient, but they are not automatically the best choice when collaborators use older software: Microsoft’s XLOOKUP function documentation.
