Its clearest real-world roles include operating systems, embedded software, database engines, and other system-facing components. C is still used today, but its presence in a category does not mean every modern product in that category is written in C.
What is C programming used for?
C is a general-purpose programming language often chosen when developers need to work close to operating-system or hardware interfaces, keep dependencies small, or build software that can be compiled for multiple platforms. Those strengths make it useful across several kinds of software, from kernels and libraries to utilities and performance-sensitive components.

The examples below distinguish clearly documented projects from broader application categories. Educational coverage can show where C is a possible fit, but it does not establish how widely C is used across an industry today.
1. Operating systems and system software
Operating systems are one of C’s most established application areas. The Linux kernel’s v6.9 documentation states that “The kernel is written in the C programming language.” It also explains that the kernel is typically compiled with GCC using -std=gnu11, the GNU dialect of ISO C11, and that Clang is supported as well. Because Linux uses GNU extensions, it is more precise to describe the implementation as GNU C in practice than as strictly standard C alone.
#1 Best Overall
This kind of work benefits from C’s ability to interact directly with system resources and interfaces. That control also places responsibility on programmers to manage memory and other low-level details carefully.
2. Embedded and resource-constrained software
C can suit systems with limited runtime facilities, but that does not mean all embedded firmware is written in C. A concrete example is SQLite: its official documentation says it runs on any operating system, including stripped-down, bare-bones embedded operating systems. SQLite also documents a minimal build that needs only a small set of standard C library routines; some builds can make allocation routines optional.
That portability makes SQLite a useful example of how C software can be adapted to constrained environments. It is evidence about SQLite, not a measure of how prevalent C is across embedded products.

3. Database engines and libraries
Database software provides two well-documented examples of C in substantial projects:
- SQLite: The project describes SQLite as a self-contained, serverless, zero-configuration transactional SQL database engine. Its rationale for using C says, “C was and continues to be the best language for implementing a software library like SQLite.”
- PostgreSQL: The PostgreSQL Global Development Group’s About page describes PostgreSQL as a mature, extensible database platform and displays “1,780,000+ Lines of C.” The page does not give a publication year or identify when that count was measured; it was accessed in 2026.
These examples show C used in both a compact, self-contained database library and a large database platform. They do not establish that every database engine uses C.
4. Compilers, interpreters, and language runtimes
Compilers and interpreters are among the lower-level software categories associated with C in educational overviews. C can serve as an implementation language for tools that translate, execute, or support other programming languages. This is a broad application category, not a claim that all current compilers or language runtimes are written in C.
GCC’s documentation covers using GCC to compile C, but that fact alone does not establish the language in which GCC itself is implemented.

Network drivers, command-line utilities, and other system-facing tools are also cited as kinds of software that can be built with C. Such programs may need to interact with operating-system services or work with limited overhead, making C a possible fit.
OpenStax’s overview of computer languages includes these categories among C-related examples. It is a general educational overview, not evidence of current industry-wide adoption or of a specific product’s implementation.
6. Games and graphics components
C can be used for low-level game or graphics components. OpenStax discusses game-related APIs for drawing graphics, playing sounds, and reading user input. Those examples support the narrower point that C can be used in parts of game-related software; they do not show that C is the default language for modern game development.
7. Other compact or performance-sensitive components
C can be considered for other software where direct resource control, portability, or a compact set of dependencies matters. Whether it is a good choice depends on the project: its target platforms, system interfaces, performance requirements, existing ecosystem, and the team’s experience all matter. The available examples do not establish a universal speed advantage or a single best language for every such project.

C gives programmers explicit control over memory and access to system interfaces, and it is supported by compilers for many platforms. That combination can make it practical for software that must interact closely with an operating system or run in environments with limited facilities.
Best Value
The trade-off is that explicit control requires careful memory handling. The GNU C Manual warns that explicit pointers can lead to memory-use errors. It even recommends that beginners first learn a language with automatic garbage collection and no explicit pointers rather than starting with C. That is a caution about the learning and safety trade-offs, not a blanket argument against using C.
Is C still used today?
Yes. Linux’s v6.9 documentation identifies C as the language of its kernel, and official SQLite and PostgreSQL pages document C in active database projects. These examples establish present-day use in those projects; they do not quantify C’s overall adoption across software development.
For a new project, weigh the level of hardware and memory control needed, target-platform support, dependency and footprint constraints, runtime requirements, ecosystem, and the team’s ability to manage memory safely. There is no universal winner established by these examples.
