When ChatGPT misses the mark, tell it what to change: clarify the task, add missing context, or give a specific correction. OpenAI recommends refining prompts through follow-up rather than treating the first response as final. These seven phrase patterns are practical examples based on that guidance, not a guaranteed formula for a correct answer.
What should you say when ChatGPT gives you a bad answer?
Start with the problem you can identify. If the answer misunderstood the request, restate the task. If it lacked important information, provide that context. If the content is basically right but not useful, specify the change you want.

OpenAI’s Help Center advises adjusting wording, adding context, or simplifying a request to improve results in its prompt engineering best practices. Its guidance on creating a good prompt likewise frames prompting as a conversation: refine requests in response to the initial answer.

Seven useful follow-up phrases
1. “Please answer this specific question: …”
Use this when ChatGPT answered a nearby question instead of yours, or when your original request could be interpreted in more than one way. Replace a broad instruction with the exact question and any necessary boundaries.
#1 Best Overall
Example: “Please answer this specific question: Does this laptop support charging over USB-C? Use only the specifications I pasted below.”
2. “Here is the context you need: …”
Use this when the answer is generic because it lacks details about your situation, audience, source material, or constraints. Add only context that could change the answer.
Example: “Here is the context you need: I’m explaining this to a beginner who uses Windows 11. Avoid Mac instructions.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. “Can you make that more concise / more detailed?”
Use this when the level of detail is wrong. Choose one direction and, if helpful, set a practical target such as “three bullet points” or “include the steps and explain why each matters.”
Rank #2
Example: “Can you make that more concise? Keep the three key steps and remove the background explanation.”
4. “Use a [plain / formal / friendly] tone.”
Use this when the wording sounds too technical, stiff, or casual for its audience. Name the tone and, when relevant, who will read it. Tone guidance affects presentation; it does not establish whether factual claims are correct.
Example: “Rewrite this in a plain, friendly tone for someone setting up their first smartphone.”
5. “Put the answer in a [table / numbered list / short email].”
Use this when the information is hard to scan or needs to be ready for a particular use. Request a format that suits the content: a table for comparable options, a numbered list for a sequence, or an email for a message you intend to send.
Rank #3
Example: “Put the troubleshooting steps in a numbered list, with the setting name and expected result for each step.”
6. “Revise this for [specific goal], especially …”
Use this when the answer is close but has a concrete weakness. Naming the goal and the part that needs attention gives ChatGPT a more actionable revision request than simply saying “make it better.”
Example: “Revise this for clarity, especially the second paragraph. Keep the meaning, but replace technical terms with plain language.”

Use this when an answer needs to follow reference material or a set of requirements. Provide the source text or constraints, ask for a check against them, and request that uncertainty be made explicit. This wording can help focus a review; it does not guarantee that the review will catch every error.
Example: “Check the answer against the product specifications below. Flag any statement the specifications do not support, and don’t fill gaps by guessing.”

Give feedback about the answer you received, not just a general instruction to try again. Identify what is wrong or missing, then say what a useful replacement should do. You can combine a correction with a request for a particular tone or format.
- Point to the issue: “That explains the causes, but it doesn’t answer whether I need to restart the device.”
- State the needed change: “Answer that question first, then give the shortest relevant reason.”
- Add a boundary if needed: “Use only the manual excerpt below. If it doesn’t say, tell me that.”
OpenAI Academy’s prompting guidance recommends providing the task, relevant context, and the preferred tone or output. Its Writing with ChatGPT guide also advises iterating with specific feedback. The seven phrases above are examples of how to put that approach into practice, not wording OpenAI has published as an official list.
Should you continue in the same chat?
Usually, a follow-up in the same conversation is useful because it can refer to the exchange already there. ChatGPT’s FAQ describes follow-up questions as part of an ongoing conversation, but that context is not a promise that the model will interpret or apply a correction correctly. If the conversation has become confusing, restate the relevant task and context clearly.
How do you check whether the revised answer is reliable?
Treat the new response as a draft, especially when it includes factual claims, instructions, or details that matter. Compare those claims with suitable sources rather than assuming a confident revision is accurate. OpenAI Academy’s guidance on writing with ChatGPT recommends fact-checking and using specific feedback as you revise.
Quick Recap
- Check important claims against an authoritative source, such as the relevant product documentation or official guidance.
- Ask ChatGPT to distinguish what the source states from what it infers.
- If the evidence you provided does not answer the question, ask it to flag the gap instead of guessing.
