Night driving is mostly a problem of limited sight distance, headlight glare and tiredness. The seven habits below address each one: match your speed to what you can see, use high beams correctly, keep glass and lights clean, have headlight aim checked, handle oncoming glare, plan around sleepy hours, and stop when drowsiness starts. The guidance comes from U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) material. Local laws and your vehicle’s manual take precedence where they differ.
1. Drive at a speed that fits what you can see
Staying at the posted limit does not make a speed safe. NHTSA’s safe driving tips say speed affects your safety “even when you’re driving the speed limit but too fast for road conditions, such as in bad weather, at dawn or dusk, at night, or through a construction zone.”

In practice, slow down on unlit roads, curves, hills and work zones, where your headlights reach only so far. Leave extra following distance so you have more time to react to something that appears late.

2. Use high beams only when no one is affected
NHTSA’s explanation of upper and lower beams is that high beams are meant mainly to light the road farther ahead when you are not meeting or closely following another vehicle. Low beams reduce glare for other drivers.

| Empty, dark road with no vehicle ahead or approaching | High beams |
| Oncoming vehicle approaching | Low beams |
| Closely following another vehicle | Low beams |

3. Keep the windshield, mirrors and headlights clean
NHTSA’s older-driver guidance advises keeping the windshield, mirrors and headlights clean. Dirt and film on glass scatter light from other cars, and grime on headlight lenses cuts how much road you can see. Clean the inside of the windshield too. A microfiber cloth works for this, but NHTSA does not specify any material or product. Clean glass helps visibility. It does not replace a safe speed or an alert driver.

4. Have headlight aim checked
The same NHTSA guidance says to make sure headlight aim is checked when the vehicle is inspected. Misaimed lights can leave the road poorly lit or dazzle other drivers. Ask a qualified service provider to check it, and adjust it yourself only if your owner’s manual supports doing so.

NHTSA advises two things:
- When oncoming traffic approaches, look toward the lower right side of the road instead of into the lights.
- Sit high enough to see at least 10 feet ahead of the vehicle, which helps reduce opposing-headlight glare.
NHTSA’s report to Congress on nighttime glare says glare can measurably affect visibility, but that attributing specific crashes to glare is difficult. Treat these as sensible habits rather than guaranteed fixes.

6. Plan around the sleepiest hours
NHTSA’s drowsy-driving page says drowsy-driving crashes happen most often between midnight and 6 a.m. and in the late afternoon. That describes when they occur, not proof that darkness alone caused them. NHTSA reports 644 deaths in crashes involving a drowsy driver in 2024, and cautions that true totals are hard to determine because investigators may not be able to identify drowsiness.
NHTSA’s wording is direct: “Getting adequate sleep on a daily basis is the only true way to protect yourself against the risks of driving when you’re drowsy.” If you can, avoid starting a long drive during those hours when you are already tired.

7. Stop when sleepiness starts
If you feel drowsy, NHTSA recommends pulling over somewhere safe for a short nap of about 20 minutes. Coffee may help briefly, but it is not enough on its own for a seriously sleep-deprived driver. Opening a window or turning up the radio are not substitutes for rest.

NHTSA describes a clear link between lighting, visibility and the ability to see hazards. It also says that putting a number on visibility’s effect on crash risk is difficult, partly because fatigue and other factors get mixed in. So no reliable figure shows how much riskier night driving is, and these tips are precautions rather than guarantees.
