For terminal-based API work, the practical alternatives here are atac, Posting, Slumber, ain, HTTPie, curlie, and curl. They are not seven equivalent AI-native products: the strongest documented natural-language request generation belongs to HTTPie Desktop, not HTTPie’s command-line client. The other entries are best compared by how you work—interactive terminal interface or shell command, request storage, scripting, and migration needs.

What “AI-native” means in this comparison

AI-assisted request authoring and terminal-based API development are separate capabilities. HTTPie’s Desktop documentation says its AI assistant can create requests from natural language, with prompts such as “List GitHub users.” That documents a feature of HTTPie Desktop; it does not establish that HTTPie CLI has the same feature. The available descriptions do not establish equivalent AI request generation across the terminal tools below, or confirm that all can be controlled by AI agents through MCP or other integrations.

The six terminal-focused clients are described in Apidog’s June 30, 2026 comparison. Apidog is an API-platform vendor, so treat its descriptions as a discovery guide rather than independent testing. Product features and imports can change; check each project’s current documentation before adopting it.

Compare the seven options by workflow

Tool Interaction Request storage or approach Best fit
atac Terminal UI (TUI) Readable JSON or YAML collections, as described by Apidog Users who want a Postman-like interactive terminal workflow
Posting TUI YAML request files; dotenv and operating-system environment variables Python-oriented users who want versionable requests and hooks
Slumber TUI and CLI slumber.yml configuration with profiles and recipes Configuration-first workflows and reusable request templates
ain CLI Editable .ain templates; delegates requests to curl, wget, or HTTPie Script-heavy work managed as files in version control
HTTPie CLI Persistent JSON sessions, according to its official CLI page Readable HTTP commands, formatted output, and shell use
curlie CLI Wraps curl; not described as a collection manager curl users who prefer HTTPie-like syntax and output
curl CLI Command-line baseline; not a Postman-style saved-collection client One-off requests, shell pipelines, and existing curl workflows

The tool descriptions in this table come from Apidog’s terminal-client comparison, except HTTPie CLI features, which are described on HTTPie’s official CLI page. The distinction between HTTPie Desktop and CLI is documented in HTTPie Desktop documentation.

Which terminal client should you choose?

Choose atac for a Postman-like terminal interface

Apidog describes atac as a Rust and Ratatui TUI with local readable JSON or YAML collections, environment variables, multiple authentication methods, and JavaScript pre- and post-request scripting. Its comparison also lists imports for Postman v2.1.0 collections, OpenAPI specifications, and cURL. Confirm those import formats and current feature support in the project’s own documentation before migrating a collection.

Choose Posting for YAML files and Python hooks

Posting is described as a Python and Textual TUI that saves requests as YAML, reads dotenv and operating-system environment variables, and supports Python code before and after requests. It suits a workflow where request definitions should be easy to read, review, and keep under version control.

Choose Slumber for configuration-driven requests

Slumber combines a TUI with a CLI and centers its workflow on slumber.yml, profiles, recipes, and dynamic values. The comparison also describes shell-command composition for responses. It is a natural fit if you prefer reusable configuration over building a collection through a graphical interface.

  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose ain for file-based scripting

ain represents requests as editable templates and delegates network work to curl, wget, or HTTPie. That makes it a distinct option from a full-screen request browser: its appeal is template files that can live alongside scripts and other version-controlled project files.

Choose HTTPie for expressive command-line requests

HTTPie’s official CLI page describes expressive syntax, JSON support, formatted output, persistent sessions, forms and uploads, authentication, and downloads. These are CLI capabilities, not evidence of the Desktop AI assistant in the terminal client. HTTPie Desktop documentation separately describes natural-language request creation.

Choose curlie if you already use curl

curlie is described as a thin frontend that combines HTTPie-like syntax and formatting with curl options. It can make interactive output more readable for curl users, but it is not described as a saved-collection manager.

Rank #3
Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Keep curl as the baseline when a client is unnecessary

curl is a command-line HTTP client, not a Postman-style workspace in this comparison. It remains the baseline for direct requests and shell composition; don’t choose it expecting the saved collections or AI authoring described for separate products.

How to decide: interaction, storage, and scripting

Pick the interaction model first

  • TUI: atac, Posting, and Slumber provide an interactive terminal interface for browsing and running requests.
  • CLI: ain, HTTPie, curlie, and curl are oriented toward commands, shell use, or automation. Slumber also has a CLI.

A TUI is not simply another name for a CLI: choose a TUI when you want interactive navigation inside the terminal, and a CLI when composing commands in scripts or shell pipelines is central to the job.

Match request storage to your team’s workflow

Apidog’s comparison describes local JSON or YAML collections for atac, YAML and dotenv for Posting, a YAML collection for Slumber, and .ain templates for ain. HTTPie CLI uses persistent JSON sessions according to its official product page; curlie wraps curl rather than supplying its own collections. Apidog describes the compared terminal tools as keeping work local and being usable over SSH, but confirm the storage and remote-use behavior of the specific project and setup you plan to use.

UGREEN USB C Hub 5 in 1 Multiport USB Adapter 4K HDMI, 100W Power Delivery
  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

Look at how each tool handles reusable logic

  • Posting’s described pre- and post-request hooks use Python.
  • atac’s described hooks use JavaScript.
  • Slumber emphasizes profiles, recipes, dynamic values, and shell composition.
  • ain delegates network requests to established command-line backends.

These approaches are not interchangeable. Consider the language your team already uses, whether request files need code hooks, and whether shell composition is enough.

Migrating from Postman: check imports and what survives

Atac is described by Apidog as importing Postman v2.1.0 collections, OpenAPI specifications, and cURL. HTTPie Desktop documentation describes importing Postman and Insomnia collections and environments, but lists omissions: imported scripting, metadata, and cookies are not preserved, and folder hierarchy is not retained as folders. These Desktop import details do not establish import support for HTTPie CLI.

Do not assume one client’s import path applies to another. Before switching, check the target project’s current documentation and test a representative export that includes the authentication, environment values, scripts, and folder organization you depend on.

When a terminal client may not be enough

This is a REST/HTTP-oriented selection. If your work depends on broader protocol coverage—such as GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket, or SSE—or on shared team collaboration, compare those requirements against the exact products and editions you are considering. Broader API-client comparisons include desktop and web products with different protocol and collaboration scopes; their features should not be attributed to the terminal tools in this list.

Postman’s alternative landscape also changes over time. Yaak’s vendor-authored comparison says Postman 12, released in March 2026, added native Git support and offline file storage, and reports a March 2026 pricing change that made free collaboration single-user. These are claims from Yaak’s comparison, not independently verified here; check Postman’s current official documentation and pricing if either point affects your decision.

Sources and scope

The broader Apidog roundup, “Best API Clients in 2026,” published September 8, 2026, is another vendor-authored comparison; it is useful for discovering options but does not establish an independent ranking. No performance or productivity testing is claimed here.
