What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can improve an audio file for free, but there is no single treatment that makes every recording sound better. First identify what is wrong—steady background hiss, an uneven tone, clicks, unwanted sound between phrases, wide volume swings, or an unsuitable final level—then apply only the processing that addresses it. The examples below use Audacity’s documented effects. Work on a copy, compare each change with the original, and undo or reduce processing if it introduces distracting artifacts.
1. Reduce steady background noise
Noise reduction is intended for a relatively steady sound, such as a constant fan or hiss. It is not a reliable fix for every background sound, and it cannot recreate speech or other details that were masked in the recording.

In Audacity, use the noise-removal and repair tools to identify a representative noise profile, then apply reduction conservatively. Listen to the result at normal playback volume as well as in pauses. The Audacity Manual warns that strong reduction can produce a bubbling or metallic quality that is more distracting than the original noise. Reduce the amount or undo the effect if you hear those artifacts.

Equalization changes the balance of frequencies. It can help address a clear tonal issue—for example, low-frequency rumble, excessive boominess, or harshness—but broad boosts and cuts made without a listening goal can make a recording less natural.

Use Audacity’s EQ or filter effects to make a modest adjustment to the problem area, then compare the processed audio with the unprocessed version. EQ changes tone; it does not remove a distracting sound just because that sound occupies a particular frequency range. If you cannot name the problem you are correcting, leave the EQ unchanged.
3. Repair clicks and other localized defects
A click, pop, or brief damaged moment is a local defect, so it may be better handled with a repair tool than with processing applied to the entire recording. Audacity’s noise-removal and repair documentation covers repair effects for this kind of problem.

Target only the affected spot where the chosen tool permits it, and listen across the edit. A repair can smooth a defect, but it may also alter nearby audio; if the result sounds unnatural, undo it or try a smaller selection. This is not a substitute for reducing continuous noise throughout a recording.

If the main annoyance is low-level room sound between words or musical phrases, a noise gate may be more appropriate than reducing noise across the whole file. A gate lowers sound when it falls below a threshold; it does not identify speech or remove background sound that remains audible under the voice.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Set the threshold with care. If it is too high, quiet syllables, breaths, or the tails of words may be cut off; if it is too low, the unwanted sound may remain. Audacity’s noise-removal overview discusses gating as one of the available approaches. Judge the transitions between phrases, not just the silence between them.
5. Compress overly wide volume changes
Compression reduces the level of audio above a threshold, which can make a recording with large volume swings easier to listen to. It also reduces dynamic contrast: applying too much can make a voice or performance sound flattened or less natural.

Use compression when inconsistent loudness is the problem, not as a general clarity effect. Audacity notes that compression can reduce the output level, so you may need makeup gain or a later normalization step. Compression cannot restore detail lost to clipping or information absent from the source.
6. Peak-normalize when you need a peak ceiling
Peak normalization adjusts the selected audio so its loudest peak reaches a chosen level. In Audacity’s Normalize manual, the default peak target is −1 dB; the manual explains that this leaves headroom, including for later lossy encoding. That is a documented setting, not a guarantee that the file will sound better or be equally loud to other files.

Use peak normalization when you need to set the maximum peak level. It changes the overall level based on the peak; it does not even out quiet and loud passages or match perceived loudness.
7. Loudness-normalize when matching perceived loudness
Loudness normalization targets measured loudness rather than the highest peak. Audacity’s manual identifies −23 LUFS as the EBU R 128 target and describes it as a reasonable spoken-word broadcast default. Streaming services may use targets a few LU higher, so check the destination platform’s current specification before choosing a delivery target; do not assume the broadcast reference is right for every upload.
For ordinary stereo material, leave independent normalization of the left and right channels off unless you have a specific reason to process them separately. Audacity cautions that separate channel adjustment can change stereo balance.
Apply final level changes after editing
Clean and edit first, then apply peak or loudness normalization as the final level step. Audacity’s manual explains that later processing can change the peaks those level effects were set to. Afterward, listen through the exported file and confirm it meets the delivery target you chose.
