What Crafting Skill Magazines do
7 Days to Die uses a Learn by Reading system for Crafting Skills. Finding and reading the relevant magazine advances the matching skill, unlocks recipes and improves the quality of items you can craft. Magazines are therefore progression items, not merely collectible books: the fastest route is the one that produces the series connected to the recipe or workstation you need next.

Open the Crafting Skills screen and identify the recipe, skill and magazine series associated with your goal. This prevents a common waste of time: clearing unrelated buildings while hoping for a particular issue. The screen is also the best place to confirm which associated perk belongs to the series you are targeting.
The most reliable farming route
Use this sequence whenever you want to target one series rather than simply collect whatever appears.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
- Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- A must-have for collectors and fans of Open-World Survival Horror, the 7 Days to Die – Console Edition Survival Bundle includes the following: An exclusive Artbook with over 100 pages showcasing never-before-seen illustrations of the zombie apocalypse, a CD featuring the haunting Original Soundtrack (OST) of the game, a double-sided poster, Fine art prints x3, Sticker sheets x 3, the physical game, and a collectible tuck-in box housing all the contents.
- Choose one target series. Write down the recipe or Crafting Skill you want to unlock and the magazine series shown for it. Keep the target narrow until that immediate bottleneck is solved.
- Loot dense book containers first. Search bookstores and buildings with many bookshelves before spending time on scattered containers. The official Book Store page lists 32 bookshelves in a Book Store, making it the clearest high-density search location documented for magazines.
- Clear category-linked points of interest. Official magazine documentation says some magazines appear in locations associated with the items they cover. If you need a weapon, armor, vehicle or food series, prioritize the specialist locations that fit that category, then use general book containers for additional rolls.
- Check every Trader. Inspect the available inventory for individual magazines. Trader stock is a separate opportunity from ordinary container loot, so include it whenever you pass through a compound.
- Run quests and inspect every reward choice. When a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle appears among the rewards, select it if your current objective is magazine progression. A quick quest can be worthwhile even when the quest location itself has few book containers.
- Search destroyed workstations in Trader compounds. These are a specific opportunity for Forge Ahead magazines. If workstation crafting is your priority, add every accessible destroyed workstation to your Trader stop.
- Use the associated perk deliberately. Each level of the perk associated with a magazine series raises the chance that a found magazine is that related type by 200%, up to a stated maximum of 1000%. Apply the perk when you are deliberately farming one series, while remembering that it changes the type weighting rather than the chance of finding any magazine.
Where to look for each kind of magazine
The game does not require a single location for all magazines. Combine broad book-container searches with category relevance and the non-container sources below.
| Goal | First places to check | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Any Crafting Skill progression | Mailboxes, newspaper boxes, bookshelves and bookstores | These are ordinary book-container sources and can produce magazines across the available series. |
| Weapon-related series | Locations associated with weapons, followed by general book containers | Magazine documentation links some series to the item categories they cover. |
| Armor-related series | Armor-associated points of interest, then bookstores and other shelves | Category-linked searches improve relevance while general containers provide extra opportunities. |
| Vehicle-related series | Vehicle-associated locations, plus mailboxes, newspaper boxes and bookshelves | Use specialist locations for relevance and broad containers for additional magazine rolls. |
| Food-related series | Food-associated locations, then dense book locations | The same category-linking principle applies to food magazines. |
| Forge Ahead | Destroyed Trader-compound workstations, Trader stock, quest bundles and bookstores | Destroyed workstations are a documented opportunity specific to this series; the other sources add independent chances. |
Route comparison: which source should you prioritize?
No universal time-per-clear table or complete loot-weight table is published in the references available for this topic. The practical comparison is therefore about container density, relevance, travel and risk rather than a guaranteed magazines-per-hour figure.

How to farm Forge Ahead
Forge Ahead is the clearest case where a special search location is documented. When workstation crafting is blocking your progression, make Trader compounds part of your normal circuit.
Rank #2
- Explore – Huge, rich environments, with unique biomes and worlds up to 100 square kilometres in size.
- Craft – Handcraft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, with hundreds of recipes and schematics.
- Build – Design your fort with traps, electricity, auto turrets, and gadgets to survive in a fully destructible and mouldable world.
- Cooperate or Compete – Work together to build settlements or against each other in a wasteland where zombies and outlaws rule the land.
- Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.
At every Trader visit
- Check the Trader’s available inventory for individual Forge Ahead magazines.
- Inspect destroyed workstations in the compound; these can contain Forge Ahead.
- Review active quest rewards and take a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle when it is offered and fits your immediate goal.
- After the Trader stop, search nearby mailboxes, newspaper boxes and bookshelves so the trip produces both targeted and general magazine opportunities.
This route combines four independent sources without assuming that any one of them guarantees a copy. If no Forge Ahead appears, continue the same circuit rather than abandoning the series after one unsuccessful visit.
Understanding the associated-perk bonus
What the published figure means
The current 7 Days to Die Official Wiki lists a 200% increased chance for the related magazine type per associated-perk level, capped at 1000% (current page accessed October 15, 2026). Treat that as a weighting bonus among magazine types. The perk makes a magazine that does appear more likely to belong to the related series.
What it does not mean
The same documentation states that the perk does not increase the overall chance that a magazine appears. A perk level cannot turn a container with no magazine into a guaranteed drop. It only changes the type selection when the loot roll produces a magazine. This distinction matters when comparing a perk investment with simply searching more containers: the perk improves targeting, while additional containers create more opportunities for a magazine roll.

- Unlimited hours of gameplay
- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more

- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
When to spend the perk
Use the associated perk deliberately after you have identified a specific recipe bottleneck. If you need several different skills at once, broad looting and Trader checks may be more useful than immediately specializing. Once one series is clearly holding back a workstation, weapon, armor, vehicle or food goal, the perk’s type weighting becomes more valuable.
Quest and Trader decisions
Quest rewards are a time-saving option because they let you choose a bundle directly instead of relying only on container tables. Always inspect the complete reward row before accepting a quest; do not choose a generic reward automatically when a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle is available. The bundle is especially useful when your current target has not appeared in several building clears.
Trader inventory is similarly valuable because it turns currency into a direct magazine opportunity. The available references do not establish a universal price, inventory schedule or reset interval, so plan around what is actually displayed in your game rather than a fixed shopping timetable. Check each Trader you visit and combine that inspection with a quest turn-in when possible.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Searching only one type of container
Mailboxes, newspaper boxes, bookshelves and bookstores all belong in the search pattern. Restricting yourself to one container type throws away ordinary book-container opportunities. Correct this by sweeping every such container along your route, then concentrating on bookshelf-heavy buildings when you have time for a dedicated clear.

A general bookstore is useful, but it is not the only answer. If you need a vehicle or food series, add points of interest associated with that category. The category link is a targeting tool, not a guarantee, so combine it with general book containers.
Assuming the perk creates more magazines
The associated perk changes magazine-type weighting and leaves the overall magazine spawn chance unchanged. If drops feel scarce, increase the number of containers, quests and Trader checks in your route instead of expecting the perk alone to solve the shortage.

Walking past Trader-compound workstations
Destroyed workstations are easy to overlook because they are environmental objects rather than a normal bookshelf search. Make them a fixed checkpoint whenever you are pursuing Forge Ahead.
Choosing a quest reward without checking the alternatives
Magazine bundles are presented as choices, so read the reward list before confirming. A short quest with a bundle can be more relevant to Crafting Skill progression than a reward that looks more valuable but does not address your current recipe.
A practical decision framework
Use the following choices to keep your route efficient without relying on unpublished drop-rate assumptions.
- You need any magazine: sweep mailboxes, newspaper boxes and bookshelves during normal travel; visit bookstores when one is available.
- You need one item category: start with category-linked points of interest, then clear dense book locations and inspect Traders.
- You need Forge Ahead specifically: prioritize destroyed Trader workstations, then check Trader stock, quest bundles and general book containers.
- You have a perk point for the associated skill: use it when one series is blocking a concrete recipe or workstation goal; remember that it biases type, not total spawn frequency.
- You are short on time: run quick quests and inspect rewards first, taking a Crafting Skill Magazine Bundle whenever it matches the series you are pursuing.
Version and platform considerations
The official wiki search result identifies Version 2.0 Stable. Exact loot weights, a complete series-by-series location table and platform-specific differences are not established in the published material cited here. Because loot rules can change between game versions, verify the live version shown by your game before relying on highly specific numbers or assuming that a container behaves identically after an update.
The documented principles are stable enough to guide a route: read the relevant magazines to advance Crafting Skills, search ordinary book containers, target category-associated locations, check Traders and quest bundles, inspect destroyed Trader workstations for Forge Ahead, and use the associated perk to influence magazine type.
Quick checklist
- Identify the recipe, Crafting Skill and target magazine in the Crafting Skills screen.
- Search every mailbox, newspaper box, bookshelf and bookstore on your route.
- Prioritize a Book Store when you can; its official page lists 32 bookshelves.
- Clear points of interest associated with the item category you need.
- Check Trader inventory on every visit.
- Inspect quest rewards and select Crafting Skill Magazine Bundles when offered.
- Search destroyed Trader workstations when farming Forge Ahead.
- Use the associated perk for type weighting, not as a boost to total magazine-spawn chance.
- Confirm your game is on the version for which the published figures apply; the cited wiki result identifies Version 2.0 Stable.
Bottom line
The fastest dependable approach is a layered route rather than a single “best” building: choose the series from the Crafting Skills screen, clear dense book containers and category-linked locations, inspect every Trader and quest reward, and add destroyed Trader workstations for Forge Ahead. The associated perk helps you aim the magazine roll at the right type, while the number of containers and opportunities you check determines how many chances you get to find one.
