The best AI laptop depends on what you mean by “AI”: running models on your own computer calls for ample memory and capable graphics, while everyday features such as transcription and webcam effects rely more on an NPU and the software around it. Tom’s Guide’s seven picks, last updated August 28, 2026, span both uses and several budgets and form factors. They are one publication’s tested selections, not a universal ranking.
Start with the AI work you want to do
“AI laptop” can describe two different kinds of use. For local large language models (LLMs) or generative image and video work, the important questions are how much memory the machine can make available to the workload and how capable its GPU is. For lighter, built-in features—such as summaries, live transcription, or webcam background effects—an NPU can run supported tasks efficiently, while battery life, portability, and the operating system’s available AI features also matter.

Those workloads are not interchangeable. A laptop advertised for AI may be well suited to background features without being a practical machine for large local models. Conversely, a heavy, expensive laptop with a powerful GPU may be unnecessary if your main use is occasional transcription or video-call effects.

These descriptions and configurations are reported in Tom’s Guide’s AI laptop guide, last updated August 28, 2026. Treat the specs as configuration-dependent rather than as a guarantee about every model sold under that name. The guide reports that its highest-memory ROG Flow Z13 configuration is needed for very large local models; it does not establish that every local model will run well on that machine.
How to choose among them
For local LLMs and generative work
Prioritize memory capacity and GPU capability, then check whether the software and model you intend to use support the laptop’s hardware. Shared memory can be relevant to local model workloads, but a large capacity alone does not guarantee a good experience: model size, quantization, software support, and workload all affect what will run and how quickly. The Flow Z13 is the guide’s mixed-use choice, while the Strix Scar 18 is its more conventional, high-end gaming-class option. The MacBook Pro M5 Pro is the guide’s Mac pick for demanding AI tasks. These are distinct platforms, not interchangeable performance claims.

For background AI features
Check which features your operating system and applications actually offer, and whether they use an NPU on your chosen configuration. Then weigh battery life and portability against screen size and other everyday needs. The Slim 3i Gen 11, Slim 5x, and MacBook Air M5 occupy more practical everyday roles in the guide than the large Scar 18; the guide’s role labels are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking the precise configuration.
For a Windows-specific choice
The XPS 16 is the guide’s Windows AI pick, with an optional RTX 5070 noted alongside its processor configurations. If you plan to run graphics-heavy local workloads, verify that the particular configuration you are considering includes the GPU option you need. If your use is mainly built-in background features, compare the actual NPU, battery, weight, display, ports, and price instead of assuming a discrete GPU is necessary.

What the published benchmark figures can—and cannot—tell you
Tom’s Guide reported the following Geekbench AI results in its 2026 guide. The test categories are kept separate here because CPU, GPU, NPU, and QNN results are not one common score and should not be ranked against one another as if they were. These are results reported by that publication, not independently reproduced universal measures.

In particular, the Slim 5x’s QNN score is not directly comparable with the CPU, GPU, or NPU scores listed for other machines. A benchmark result also does not by itself establish performance in a particular local model or application; check results for the specific software and configuration you intend to use.

- Current local pricing and availability. The guide’s more-than-$3,000 figure applies specifically to its 128GB ROG Flow Z13 configuration, not to every Flow Z13.
