68k-MBC: A Homebrew 68008 Computer in Three ICs

The 68k-MBC Lite configuration pairs a 68008, SRAM and PIC to run CP/M-68K and other provided software. Here’s how it works and what Full adds.

The 68k-MBC is a homebrew 68008 single-board computer whose three-IC claim applies to its Lite hardware configuration: a 68008 processor, SRAM and a PIC microcontroller. The PIC handles EEPROM and emulates the I/O functions the Lite system needs, rather than relying on separate conventional chips for those jobs. The project also offers a more capable Full configuration, which has different hardware and limits.

What makes the Lite build a three-IC computer?

The 68k-MBC project documents an 8 MHz 68008 CPU. In Lite, the main ICs are the processor, SRAM and PIC18F47Q10. The project owner describes the PIC as serving as EEPROM and as a universal I/O emulator. Its firmware interfaces directly with the CPU system bus and emulates required I/O chips during memory-mapped I/O reads and writes, as well as interrupt-acknowledge bus cycles. The project’s technical description explains the design.

This is a count of the central integrated circuits in the Lite configuration, not a claim that every 68k-MBC version has only three chips. The Full configuration is more populated and provides additional capabilities.

What can the 68k-MBC run?

Hackaday reports that the board runs CP/M-68K and standalone executables. The project owner says Lite can run all of the software provided for the project, including CP/M-68K. Hackaday’s October 2, 2026 feature presents the board as an entry in its 2026 Retrocomputing Challenge.

The PIC’s bus-level emulation is central to how this compact design works: rather than providing separate conventional I/O chips for the described functions, firmware responds to the CPU’s relevant bus cycles. That design description does not establish further electrical timing or voltage details.

Lite and Full: documented differences

Capability Lite Full
Hardware population Three main ICs: 68008, SRAM and PIC microcontroller, per the project’s Lite description. More populated hardware; the project does not give a three-IC count for Full.
RAM configurations 128 KB or 512 KB. 128 KB, 512 KB or 1024 KB.
Serial connectivity Serial Port 1 only. Two serial ports; Serial Port 2 is Full-only.
AUX connector I2C only. Additional AUX functions are available; the project lists an optional 16-line GPIO expander.
CPU interrupts Not supported. Supported.
Provided software Project owner says it can run all provided software, including CP/M-68K. Project owner says it can run all provided software.

The project also lists a microSD module for hard-drive emulation, an RTC option, an I2C expansion port and serial connectivity. The configuration overview is the source for Lite/Full distinctions and options: 68k-MBC project page.

What the 2026 Retrocomputing Challenge announcement said

Hackaday’s announcement said eligible projects should be featured on Hackaday.io, set Tuesday, October 27, 2026 as the deadline, and offered three favorites a $150 DigiKey gift certificate. Those are the announcement’s terms, not evidence that submissions remain open after the stated deadline. See Hackaday’s challenge announcement.

What the available specifications do not establish

The project details support describing the 68008 clock, memory options and configuration-specific features, but do not provide a Lite-versus-Full speed, price, power-use or ease-of-use comparison. They also do not establish chip-level electrical timing, bus voltage or package variants. Treat the three-IC description as a Lite design claim, not a complete electrical specification or a claim about every build.
