On supported U.S. mobile services, dial *67 before the phone number to ask your carrier to hide your caller ID for that call. The recipient may see “Private,” “Anonymous,” “Restricted,” or similar wording. It is a request to restrict caller-ID display—not a guarantee of complete anonymity—and the exact behavior depends on your carrier.
Does *67 still work on cell phones?
Yes, according to current support instructions from major U.S. carriers. T-Mobile says to dial *67 before the number to make an anonymous call, and AT&T says to dial *67 followed by the 10-digit number for one-call blocking. AT&T describes caller-ID blocking as included on its wireless voice plans. Check your own carrier for its current dialing instructions and plan details: this is not a universal guarantee for every mobile service.

The prefix signals the carrier to withhold caller-ID information from the recipient’s display for that call. It does not change your phone number or turn the call into an untraceable one.
How to use *67 to block your number for a call
- Open your phone’s dialer.
- Enter
*67, then the number you want to call. For AT&T wireless, the documented instruction is*67followed by the 10-digit number. - Place the call. The recipient may see a private or anonymous caller label instead of your number.
Because *67 is documented as per-call blocking, enter it again for each call where you want to request caller-ID restriction. T-Mobile’s support page states: “To make an anonymous call yourself, dial *67 before dialing the number.” T-Mobile Support and AT&T provide carrier-specific guidance.

What *67 does—and does not—hide
*67 asks the network to restrict the caller-ID information presented to the person or organization receiving the call. It is not a burner number, does not replace your number with a different one, and should not be treated as a promise that nobody can identify the caller. The available carrier guidance establishes caller-ID blocking, not complete anonymity.
When *67 may not work
Emergency calls
AT&T says caller ID cannot be blocked when calling 911. Xfinity says blocking does not work for 911, public emergency hotlines, or poison-control lines. These are provider-specific statements; do not assume every carrier lists the same exceptions. AT&T’s guidance and Xfinity’s guidance describe their respective rules.

Toll-free calls
AT&T says caller ID cannot be blocked on toll-free calls. This is an AT&T-stated exception, not a verified rule for every carrier or service.

A recipient may use anonymous-call rejection, which can prevent a call with blocked caller ID from reaching them. T-Mobile notes that recipients may choose not to accept anonymous callers. Rogers documents this behavior for its Canadian Home Phone service; that example should not be generalized to U.S. mobile service. T-Mobile; Rogers Home Phone.

Other service-specific limitations
Rogers says caller information may still be provided in some cases on its Home Phone service, including calls to Rogers customer service, collect calls, 800/900 numbers for billing, and systems that do not recognize the privacy indicator. It also cautions that some recipient applications or devices may reveal caller ID. Those examples concern Rogers Home Phone, not a universal description of mobile networks. Rogers’ limitations.
*67 versus blocking caller ID on every call
*67 is a per-call method. Some providers also offer a persistent caller-ID setting through the device or account, but the steps and availability vary. AT&T documents separate controls for blocking caller ID on all calls and lists *82 to show caller ID on a call. What to do if *67 does not work
- Confirm the dialing pattern with the carrier serving the line; the cited instructions cover specific U.S. providers, not every carrier or country.
- Check whether the destination is an emergency or toll-free number, or whether the recipient rejects anonymous calls.
- If you want caller ID hidden on every call, ask your carrier whether it supports a persistent setting and how to enable it. Do not rely on another provider’s codes.
The FCC describes consumer-choice call-blocking services as regulatory background, but that does not establish how *67 works on a particular wireless plan. FCC caller ID and spoofing information.
