6 Tricks to Get AI to Write Shorter (Because Not Everything Needs to Be a TED Talk)

Ask for shorter AI writing with a clear task, a concrete length, and specific editing instructions. These six techniques help you get concise drafts and trim answers that run long.

To get AI to write shorter, give it a clear task, a specific length and format, and the key details it must retain. If the first answer still runs long, ask for a focused cut—or give it a draft to tighten. These six prompt techniques work across AI writing tools; product-specific controls vary.

1. State the job and the audience

A broad request such as “write something about remote work” leaves the AI to guess what matters and how much to say. Narrow the assignment by naming the purpose, reader, and desired outcome. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends being clear and specific, supplying relevant context, and describing the tone or style.

Try: “Explain our new remote-work policy to employees who have not read it. Tell them what changes next month and what action to take. Use a friendly, direct tone.”

2. Set a concrete length and shape

“Keep it short” is subjective. Give the model a boundary that fits the task: a word count, number of sentences, or number of bullets. Specify the format, too, so the answer has a defined shape. OpenAI Academy’s writing guidance discusses word-count constraints and scannable formats; OpenAI’s API prompt-generation guide likewise treats length and syntax as parts of an output specification.

For example: “In 100 words, give me three bullets for a busy reader.” Use a limit that leaves room for the necessary detail; a very tight cap can force the model to omit useful context.

3. Ask for the useful version, not a speech

Tell the AI what to leave out as well as what to include. Ask for plain language, short paragraphs, and only the information needed for the task. Headings and brief paragraphs can make a response easier to scan, as OpenAI Academy’s writing guidance recommends.

4. Give it something to edit

If you already have notes or a draft, ask the AI to shorten that material rather than starting over with a broad topic. A source draft gives it specific content to work with. OpenAI Academy recommends providing a starting point when possible and describes revision as a way to improve clarity, flow, tone, and length.

Try: “Shorten this email to 120 words. Keep the request and deadline, and preserve a professional but warm tone: [paste draft].” Check the revision against your original before using it, especially if exact wording or details matter.

5. Name what must survive the cut

Shortening can remove more than repetition. Identify the facts, action, or tone that cannot be lost, then say what can go. This makes the editing goal more precise, but it does not guarantee that every important meaning will be preserved; review the result.

Try: “Cut this announcement to five sentences. Keep the launch date, who is affected, and the next step. Remove repeated context.”

6. Give targeted feedback on the next pass

If the response is still too long, point to the specific problem instead of repeating “make it shorter.” Ask for a new limit or name the material to remove while stating what needs to remain. OpenAI Academy recommends focused revision feedback, and OpenAI Help Center guidance describes prompting as an iterative conversation.

For example: “Cut this to 80 words. Keep the deadline and next step; remove the repeated explanation in the middle.” Then check that the shorter version still answers the original question.

Which length controls can you use?

Prompt instructions are the broadly usable option: they can define a task, format, and target length without relying on a particular product setting. A product or API control, when available, is a separate option and may apply only to specific models or plans. None of the cited guidance establishes that one approach is generally more effective than another.

Approach Where it applies Best suited to Length precision
Prompt instructions In the request to the AI Initial drafts or edits across writing tasks Can specify a word, sentence, or bullet count; results still need checking
Product or API control Only where a specific tool or model offers one Adjusting a product’s documented output-style setting Depends on the available control; it may not set an exact word count

For a specific example, OpenAI’s 2025 GPT-5 developer announcement documents an API verbosity parameter with three settings: low, medium, and high. The announcement says explicit instructions take precedence if they conflict with that parameter. This is a GPT-5 API feature, not a universal chatbot setting. Anthropic’s prompting guidance also discusses communication style and verbosity, with advice that varies by model. Check the documentation for the product and model you use rather than assuming the same controls are available everywhere.
