For an existing Squarespace 7.0 site, the template family matters. Bedford, Brine, Five, Montauk, Pacific, and Tremont are six compatible examples—not an official ranking. Squarespace lists seven eligible 7.0 families in total.
Do you need a special Squarespace template for a video background?
First check your site version. In 7.1, video background is a section setting rather than a feature that distinguishes one template from another. In 7.0, banner features vary by template family, so compatibility depends on the family your site uses.
Squarespace’s guide states, “All version 7.1 sites share the same template.” The platform still supports 7.0, but says it focuses on 7.1 and suggests considering a move to 7.1 for current features. A move is a version change, not simply selecting another template within the existing 7.0 site.

The six families below are practical examples for readers who already have a compatible 7.0 site or specifically want its older banner behavior. Squarespace’s compatibility list includes a seventh family, Adirondack. The documentation identifies features; it does not rank quality or establish a single best design.

Use page types and banner treatment to narrow the choice. The table reflects Squarespace’s 7.0 compatibility documentation; it is not a comparison of tested performance or visual quality.

How to choose among the six
- Need overlay content? Brine’s documented intro area supports blocks such as text and buttons over a banner.
- Want a full-bleed banner with visibility controls? Tremont documents both traits.
- Need slideshow or stacked Index banners? Bedford and Pacific list these options.
- Need a wide mix of page types? Brine and Pacific list layout, album, blog, events, gallery, Index, and product pages.
- Have Five? Distinguish a page-level video banner from the site-wide banner, which does not support video.
Adirondack is another compatible 7.0 family, listed for layout, blog, events, and product pages, with a fade effect on scroll. The six examples are not the complete compatibility list.
How to add a video background in Squarespace 7.1
In the 7.1 editor, add or edit a supported section and open its background settings. Squarespace supports block sections, portfolio sections, and auto layouts. Available media choices include an uploaded file, an item in the media library, background videos to browse, or a YouTube or Vimeo link. A linked Vimeo background video requires a paid Vimeo plan.

- Choose a supported section: Add or edit a block section, portfolio section, or auto layout.
- Open the section background controls: Select video as the background and choose upload, media library, background-video library, YouTube, or Vimeo.
- Set the presentation: Choose full-bleed or inset treatment, apply a filter, adjust playback speed, and add a mobile fallback image.
- Check the page in context: Keep foreground text legible and avoid using so many moving sections that they compete with the content.
Background videos play silently in a loop. They are visual backgrounds, not a way to add sound to a section.
Prepare an upload that meets Squarespace’s guidance
Squarespace’s 2026 guidance sets a maximum upload length of 60 seconds and recommends keeping clips under 40 seconds. It recommends 1080p resolution, a bitrate of at least 3 Mbps, and 60 frames per second, especially for slow motion. These are platform limits and recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular clip will load quickly on every visitor’s device. Each site includes 30 minutes of storage for uploaded videos.

Squarespace recommends using no more than two background videos per page to reduce page size and help pages load faster. Large files can take longer to load or pause, depending on a visitor’s connection.

Not consistently for every visitor. Squarespace says connection speed and browser version can affect whether a video loads, and devices in low-battery or power-saving mode will not display background video. Its 7.0 guidance also warns that video banners may fail on mobile.
Add a fallback image so the section still has a deliberate visual when video is unavailable. Without one, a background color generally appears; on low-power devices, a thumbnail with an unresponsive play button may appear instead. Preview the page on mobile and make sure the image, text, and controls still make sense without motion.

Which option should you use?
- Building or redesigning in 7.1: Choose the section layout and visual treatment that fit the page; video capability is part of supported sections, not a reason to seek a distinct 7.1 template.
- Keeping a 7.0 site: Check the actual family against Squarespace’s compatibility list, then choose based on page types and banner controls. The six options above are examples, and Adirondack is also eligible.
- Choosing for mobile visitors: Treat the fallback image as part of the design, not an optional polish step.
