Six Android apps recommended by Android Police cover notes, passwords, files, household inventory, and media playback: Joplin, Bitwarden, Nextcloud, Fossify File Manager, Grocy, and VLC for Android. They may help replace particular paid apps, but an open-source app does not automatically make every related service free. Sync, hosting, storage, and setup can still cost money.
Which app fits the job you need done?
| App | Use | What the available documentation establishes | Cost or setup consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joplin | Notes and to-dos | Its official help describes it as free, open source, and offline-first; notes are stored in Markdown, and Android and desktop versions are available. | The app is free, but syncing choices differ. Joplin Cloud is paid; other documented backends include services you may already use, a server, or local storage. |
| Bitwarden | Password management | Included among the six recommendations in the September 11, 2026 Android Police article. | Current free-plan limits, Android features, and security configuration are not established by the documentation available for this roundup. Check current official details before switching. |
| Nextcloud | Files and personal cloud | Nextcloud documents an Android client that accesses files on a Nextcloud server. | The client is separate from the server. Using it does not by itself provide hosted storage; self-hosting involves equipment, storage, setup, and maintenance, or you can use paid hosting. |
| Fossify File Manager | Managing files on a device | Included among the six recommendations in the September 11, 2026 Android Police article. | Claims about ads, tracking, permissions, and design have not been independently established here. Check the current app listing and permissions before installing. |
| Grocy | Household inventory and grocery management | Included among the six recommendations; the article describes it as self-hostable. | The current features and costs of its Android companion have not been independently established here. Self-hosting can involve setup and ongoing maintenance. |
| VLC for Android | Media playback | VideoLAN documents support for audio and video files, network streams, and DVD ISO files. | The cited Android page establishes playback capabilities, not a standardized comparison of total costs against other media apps. |
Joplin: notes without requiring a paid sync plan
Joplin is the clearest example in this group of why app cost and service cost should be considered separately. Its core app is described in official help as free, open source, and offline-first. You can use it for notes and to-dos without relying on a cloud sync plan, and its notes use Markdown.

If you need notes synchronized across devices, Joplin documents several backends: Joplin Cloud, Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive, and the local filesystem. The right option depends on what you already have and how much setup you want to take on. Local storage avoids choosing a remote sync service, but it does not provide cross-device synchronization by itself.
Joplin Cloud is optional and paid. Its plan page listed Basic at €2.99 per month or €28.69 per year when checked on October 7, 2026. Those are a dated price snapshot, not a claim that the app itself requires a subscription.

Nextcloud: the Android app is not the cloud server
Nextcloud can suit someone who wants access to files through a personal cloud setup. Its official developer documentation describes the Android client as a way to access files on a Nextcloud server. The client and server are distinct parts: installing the Android app alone does not give you hosted storage.
If you self-host, account for the machine or storage, initial configuration, and ongoing maintenance. If you would rather not manage a server, hosting may be available from a provider at a cost. Self-hosting is an option, not a prerequisite for installing every app in this list, and it should not be treated as a zero-cost substitute for a subscription.

What to verify before replacing a paid app
The six recommendations are a set of use-case suggestions, not a tested ranking. The available information does not establish a consistent, current price comparison across all six categories, so it cannot support a reliable annual-savings total. Check the details that matter to your own workflow:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Match the task. Joplin covers notes and to-dos; Bitwarden passwords; Nextcloud files and personal cloud access; Fossify File Manager local file management; Grocy household inventory and grocery management; and VLC media playback.
- Decide whether offline use is enough. If you need the same data on multiple devices, identify how synchronization works before moving existing data.
- Separate app from service costs. An app may be free while a preferred cloud plan, hosted server, or storage service is paid.
- Count the maintenance. A self-hosted option trades dependence on a commercial service for setup and upkeep; choose it only if that trade-off suits you.
- Confirm current details for less-documented picks. For Bitwarden, Fossify File Manager, and Grocy, check current official listings and documentation for the features, pricing, and permissions you need.
