In my case, six self-hosted applications offered alternatives for specific workflows: photos, files, calendars and contacts, spreadsheets, passwords, and location history. They are separate tools, not a complete replacement for Google, and running them means taking responsibility for updates, security, backups, and uptime.
What these six containers replace—and what they do not
The list is best understood as a set of individual swaps. Each app addresses one kind of data or task; none should be assumed to reproduce every feature of its Google counterpart. The six-tool mapping below is the one reported in coverage of the original first-person article, rather than the result of an independent feature audit. Why migrate one workflow at a time
The value of this approach is that it avoids making an all-or-nothing decision. You can start with the service whose data or workflow you most want to control, learn what operating it entails, and decide whether another migration is worthwhile. The original author’s account presents these tools as ways to reduce dependence, not as evidence that everyone should leave Google or that all six work equally well for every household.

- Feature coverage and clients: Identify which functions you actually use and whether your devices and apps can connect to the replacement.
- Migration and export: Find out how data moves into the new service and how you can retrieve it later.
- Resources: Check storage, memory, and processor needs for the particular application and workload.
- Backup and restoration: Plan how to make separate copies and test that you can restore them.
- Remote access and security: Decide how you will reach the service from outside your home and manage accounts, network exposure, and updates.
- Ongoing effort: Weigh the control you gain over the hosting environment against the time and responsibility of operating it.
Self-hosting shifts responsibility to you
Using your own server changes who operates the storage; it does not automatically make data more private, more secure, or more available. Those outcomes depend on how the host is configured, who can access it, how credentials are protected, whether software is updated, and whether backups can be restored. Password vaults and location histories deserve particular care because they hold sensitive information.
A Docker container is not a backup. Immich’s official installation guide explicitly warns: “Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!” The project recommends Docker Compose for production deployment and notes that Immich is under active development. What to expect from Immich’s hardware requirements
Immich is the only application in this group for which the cited material establishes concrete deployment and hardware guidance. Its requirements page, accessed on October 7, 2026, lists a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores, and recommends 8 GB of RAM and 4 cores. It supports amd64 and arm64, and recommends local SSD storage for database files rather than a network share. These are project-published requirements, not a guarantee of performance for every library or workload; requirements can change. Check the Immich requirements page before deploying.

A practical way to start
- Choose one workflow. Pick a service you want to move rather than attempting a wholesale switch.
- Check the fit. Confirm the replacement’s features, client compatibility, migration path, and current hardware requirements using that project’s documentation.
- Plan for failure. Decide how the service will be updated, protected from unauthorized access, backed up, and restored. Keep an independent copy of important data.
- Try it before relying on it. Use a limited set of data or a parallel workflow first, then confirm that everyday access and recovery work as expected.
- Expand only if the trade-off works. Add another service when the control is worth the operational work—not because a list of alternatives implies a complete or effortless replacement.
