The best camping lantern depends on what you need it to illuminate and how you’ll power it. For a compact rechargeable light, consider the Goal Zero Lighthouse Micro Charge; for a light REI describes as lightweight and easy to hang, consider the Black Diamond Moji R+. The Coleman Classic Recharge models offer published brightness and runtime figures at three settings, while the Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 and LuminAID Max Quick Inflate add alternate charging options. No single lantern is the right choice for every trip.
How to choose a camping lantern
Start with the job
A lantern for close-up tasks or a relaxed tent atmosphere does not need the same output as one intended to light a cooking area or shared campsite. REI says 100 lumens or fewer can be enough for ambiance or close-up use; broader illumination calls for more output. Treat maximum lumens as only one part of the decision: the available low settings, runtime, light comfort, mounting options, and power source matter too.

Compare runtime at the same brightness setting
Runtime figures depend on the mode. A lantern may last much longer on low than on high, so compare like with like and check whether the published figure is an “up to” claim. Manufacturer specifications are not independent measurements, and figures from different products may not reflect identical test conditions.

- Rechargeable: Charge the lantern before leaving and consider whether its battery capacity suits the trip length.
- Disposable batteries: Swappable cells make it possible to carry spares, though you must pack enough for the expected use.
- Solar or manual charging: These can provide another way to replenish a lantern, but the useful charging rate and conditions depend on the product.
- Fuel: Fuel-powered lanterns have different supply and handling needs from electric models.
Balance packed weight against campsite features
For backpacking, weight and packed size are important. At a car campsite, hanging points, magnets, broader illumination, a very low setting, or USB output for another device may matter more. Water-resistance ratings are useful context, but they do not make a lantern suitable for every exposure or guarantee that it can be submerged.

Which lantern fits your kind of camping?
For backpacking

The lower settings can extend stated runtime, but provide less light. For close-up or ambient use, REI says 100 lumens or fewer can suffice.
For off-grid or alternate charging
The Lighthouse Micro Charge accepts USB or a compatible solar panel, according to Goal Zero. REI identifies mechanical charging on the Lighthouse 600 and solar charging on the LuminAID Max Quick Inflate.
