There is no universal “top six” for buying and trading Bitcoin and Ethereum: availability, BTC/ETH markets and costs vary by location and product. For U.S. readers, Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Crypto.com, Binance.US and Bitstamp are six services to compare—not a verified ranking. Check that each serves your state and offers the exact BTC or ETH market you want before opening an account. A simple buy flow and an order-book trade are different products, and their total costs can differ.
How to compare exchanges before choosing one
Start with the trade you actually intend to make, rather than an exchange’s total coin count or its advertised lowest fee. A service may offer a simple purchase interface as well as an order book, and eligibility for a product can vary by country or state.

- Location: Confirm that the exchange and the specific feature you want are available where you live. Kraken notes that some product features have country exclusions; check its product information and local terms.
- Market: Look for the exact BTC or ETH spot pair you plan to use. A general listing of supported assets does not establish that a particular pair is available to your account.
- Order type and interface: Decide whether you want a simple quoted purchase or to place an order against an order book. Compare like with like.
- Total cost: For your order size, check the applicable maker or taker rate, any spread or markup in a quoted purchase, and any relevant funding or withdrawal charge.
- Execution and custody: Review available order controls and the current terms for withdrawing the asset. Do not assume custody or withdrawal conditions are the same across platforms.
The six names below are candidates for comparison, not a ranking by safety, quality or market share. Current pair availability, local eligibility and a consistent fee comparison across all six have not been established here; verify each directly before trading.

Coinbase
Coinbase offers distinct simple buy/sell and Advanced trading experiences. Coinbase says simple buy/sell quotes include a spread that may vary; Coinbase Advanced instead connects users to the order book and has no included spread, according to its Advanced trading fees help page. That does not mean an Advanced trade is cost-free: the applicable trading fee still matters.

Coinbase’s September 16, 2026 announcement lists entry spot-tier maker/taker rates for Coinbase Advanced that vary by eligible market. The rates are not interchangeable across regions or products:

These are Coinbase-announced entry rates for eligible Coinbase Advanced spot markets, not a promise that every customer, pair or account receives them. Coinbase says rates can change and are shown in the order preview. Its separate Coinbase Exchange fee page lists tier ranges of 0.00%–0.40% maker and 0.04%–0.60% taker, based on the user’s current 30-day trading volume; those ranges are not a single BTC or ETH rate. Check the current fee schedule and your account’s displayed tier.

Kraken
Kraken is another candidate to evaluate for a BTC or ETH purchase or trade. Confirm that the relevant spot market and trading product are available in your location; product access may have country exclusions. Review the pair, order interface, live fee information and withdrawal terms applicable to your account rather than assuming that one Kraken product’s conditions apply to another.

Check Gemini’s current regional eligibility and confirm the precise BTC or ETH market and interface available to you. Compare the quoted price for a simple purchase with the fee and execution details for an order-book trade if both are offered. Before selecting Crypto.com, verify that the service and the specific trading feature you need are supported in your location. Check the BTC/ETH pair you intend to trade, then review the order preview and any applicable funding or withdrawal terms. No comparable current fee figure for this service is established here.
Binance.US
Binance.US is a separate U.S.-focused candidate to check, but do not infer state eligibility or pair availability from its name. Verify access for your state and account, find the exact BTC or ETH market, and compare the applicable order-book fee and other charges with the quote from any simple-purchase flow.

Bitstamp
Bitstamp is a further candidate for comparison. Confirm that it serves your location and offers the intended BTC or ETH pair, then check its live fee schedule, order preview and withdrawal terms. The available information here does not support assigning it a current fee or custody advantage over the other exchanges.
Why “lowest fee” can be misleading
A maker/taker percentage describes only part of the cost of a trade. Maker and taker status depends on how an order interacts with the order book, and the applicable tier may depend on recent trading volume. A simple purchase may instead use a quoted price that includes a spread. Coinbase explicitly distinguishes its simple buy/sell quote from Advanced order-book trading in its fee guidance.

For Coinbase Advanced, Coinbase’s September 16, 2026 announcement gives different entry spot rates for the United States, EU/UK, and Brazil/India/other international markets. Coinbase Exchange separately publishes volume-tier ranges. Neither schedule should be treated as a universal rate for every Coinbase product, customer or market. Before submitting an order, inspect the live preview and your account’s fee tier; Coinbase says Advanced rates can change.
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Confirm that the exchange and the exact product are available in your country or state.
- Find the precise BTC or ETH spot pair you plan to use; do not rely on a broad asset-support list.
- Choose whether to use a simple purchase quote or an order book, then compare the same order size and type across services.
- Review the displayed price, applicable fee tier, order type and total before confirming. Include any funding or withdrawal charge relevant to your plan.
- Read the current local terms and withdrawal details for the asset and network you intend to use.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The six exchanges are a useful shortlist to investigate, not a universal verdict. Available evidence does not establish a current, like-for-like comparison of BTC and ETH pairs, total costs, custody terms or withdrawals across all six. Those details depend on location, account and product and can change. Use each service’s current local information and order preview to make the final comparison.
